HTC Vive: "Base stations lost optical sync"

After almost 2 years Vive'ing, since about a week, I am randomly getting this error message, contextually with a rebooting base station.
Everything works well 95% of the time, then suddenly my screen goes grey for about ~10 seconds before tracking eventually resumes. This is preventing me from playing Elite properly (among other games), as if this happens during PvP I am usually screwed.
The full message reads, "There may be something blocking line of sight between the two base stations. If this warning persists between sessions you might consider switching to cabled sync".
As an experienced Viver, I made sure that:

  • the room has no reflective surfaces;
  • there is direct line of sight between base stations, unobstructed;
  • they are sturdily and firmly secured to the wall.
Everything works perfectly most of the time, 95% of the time or more; my Vive worked perfectly for almost 2 years - is one of the base stations giving up the ghost? The only other thread lamenting this exact issue is this one, and no solution seems to have been found.
Any clues?

I know you have them secured right now to the wall and that's mostly likely where they've always been with no problem, but have you tried putting them in a different position just to see if the issue still replicates?

Have you added any wireless devices recently that might possibly interfere with their signal? I think the base stations operate via bluetooth but I'm not 100% sure on that.

I'm just thinking of possible causes apart from the worst case one, which is that it is going faulty. Does it tell you which base station is at fault, and is it the same one each time that is causing the issue?

The base stations do not use bluetooth to establish tracking, although they could use bluetooth to update firmware.

I have since re-oriented them, plugged one straight into the wall socket (before it was plugged to another extension that was also powering another PC), power-cycled them. The issue has yet to come back, so I'm good for now.
