HUD Colors an actual problem for some

Will we get the option to change our HUD colors at some point in the future? Hopefully soon.

Because it's an actual issue not just a cosmetic choice for me personally and maybe others as well. I'm red/green colorblind and the neon orange and my eyes don't mix and I have a lot of trouble seeing and differentiating those colors this includes most shades of them as well and the brighter/lighter the harder it is and this ranges from light green through yellow and all the way into dark red hitting every shade or hue from one spectrum to the next I basically can't differentiate or see most them. So as you can maybe guess I miss quite a lot of things happening on my ships HUD including target markers on ships. Most games these days have a few colorblind modes to choose from the start standard. I'm actually really surprised this game doesn't with how much this game revolves around noticing different icons and being completely reliant on the HUD.

And it sucks because I really enjoy this game and the HUD hurts my eyes to look at. Literally.

It's something that has been brought up before. Unfortunately afaik Frontier have not even verbally addressed this issue. Apparently the way they coded the HUD, it'd be a monumental effort to change. Since for some reason or another, the HUD code affects more than just the HUD. If i remember right, anyway.

As for the HUD, I've brought it up before, and pointed out that people with ocular difficulties really do struggle to play Elite because of the fixed HUD colour scheme. We should have a two colour option at the very least, as a matter of priority

From elsewhere. As Slayer said, the issue doesn't get any kind of response whenever it's raised.

The orange HUD is also really bad when in the galactic core, where everything is pretty much flooded in orange ambient light 24/7.

Pretty much what BFD Slayer said. It's not a simple thing to change, and would take a good amount of effort. I've had a few of my posts talking about this issue liked by Fdev, so they at least read these. The best solution I can offer, is altering your TV's color. (As in setting color to zero so it's black and white, or setting it to cool so the colors are more blue) I've done this from time to time myself. I've got slight problems with hue differentiation, myself. Nothing enough to notice most times, just leads to rare occassions of, "why are you wearing a pink shirt?" "Oh, I thought it was red." type moments. Not sure what type you'd call that, I've never brought it up with a doctor/optometrist. Mostly happens with reds. See a red, often think it's magenta/rose/pink unless it's like a dark crimson, but even then that looks like it has a slight pink hue to it.

Also, does this bright orange hud ever look kinda brown to anyone with normal eyes? Might just be my eyes, haha.

Yes! I think this might be the big 4-0...as in the 40th time I get to say "FD I'll gladly buy bunches of HUD colors from you if you ever make this happen!" (hey, can't hurt to keep reminding them right). And I'm not trying to make light of your problem OP, I can definitely understand how someone with a color problem would have issues with the HUD. I just never pass up an opportunity when it comes to HUD colors.

No one knows if it can be changed technically or not, or if it will ever be fixed. Some of us speculate that the game may be designed in such a way that HUD colors are impossible to be changed while retaining its functionality. Frontier has never responded officially, or at least I think their biggest response was "no plans at this time". But it was long ago. I personally have given up on this, I don't think we will ever have the option to change the color. Sorry to hear about your issue. :(

There are some other HUD colors that work well on PC. Those should be alternative HUD options on consoles via the menu graphics settings.

Please give an official response Frontier on why this is not yet added after so many requests and people waiting for HUD customization.

That is a good point, some do look pretty good on PC, and they don't seem to alter (or screw up) mission boards and such to bad. Wouldn't that mean FD could give us those color options relatively easy? Probably not and I'm just reaching :)

Yes, they are quite nice on PC but changing the colours does have a knock on effect for practically all the elements of the HUD. It's a matter of trial and error getting to a compromise that suits you.

Some nice blue HUD's, like my current one makes all the ship icons in the radar (except for friendlies) turn blue. Enemies are just a darker shade of blue rather than red. If I adjust that to make the enemy targets red, it effects the shield display, the avatar pictures on the message board and a few other things. Like I said, it's about reaching a pleasing visual setup with compromises you're willing to live with.

There are 3rd party utilities like Dr Kaii's ED profiler on the PC that let you sort through the best of the player created HUD's without moving a slider or editing a file...but the colour fix won't be coming from FDev, not without a major rewrite of the code...

I'd be okay with your colors :) I know, nothing will change anytime soon. They have other priorities, and much more important things to do with their time. Sometimes I just wish the needs of me outweighed the needs of many lol.

Oh it's such a complicated process! No, they can't put simple color toggles for a few color selections...no! It's so difficult! (yes, that was complete mockery of the situation)

...And, yet, on PC, all you do is pop open an XML file and change 3 lines of values and...voila!

By editing the values of MatrixRed, MatrixGreen and MatrixBlue, you'll change the HUD's colour. But which numbers to use? Anything between 0 and 1 is fine—0.5, for example, or 0.27. Go wild, and try things out. Or, use this tool, which lets you play with sliders to find the right look and then tells you the values to use.

Seems to me the community has figured this out back in 2014. Easy peasy lemon squeezy. The color value settings already exist for it. They could easily just put a couple presets with pre-determined values for "Cyan, Green, Blue, Red..." I've even seen people using grey and white colors that looks awesome. I've never heard the PC community complaining about it changing the color to something else unintentionally.

I'm sure you know we can't edit those files on Xbox. For the developers to give us the ability to change the colors would apparently require recoding large amounts of the UI as well. I don't like the constant orange colour either but can't you deal with it for the time being?

I posted that as an example on just how easy it is to change the colors, as some have claimed the reason why we don't have the option is because of certain "complexities."

Yes, true... I have dealt with it for 2 1/2 years. Why not longer? lol

"Can't you deal with it for the time being?" isn't really the most appropriate way to accommodate a person's disability.

It's one thing if they actually had such a disability, but from their previous post they just dislike the color.

As the title suggests. I'm wondering when Xbox players will be worthy enough to change the hue of their dash, too? I don't see anything in the store, but there are options for it in the Livery...and last I heard, PC players didn't even need to pay anything, as you can change it in the game files, and have been able to do so since release. Is it that hard to add a color slider in the game settings? I really hate that orange.

Fair enough, if they'd mentioned that I wouldn't be so crude.

From their previous post, I made the assumption they just disliked the color.

It's called Customization, and believe it or not, but a lot of games are doing it these days! You can even change your paint job in Elite Dangerous, and laser colors! Yet, one of the coolest thing that people have been changing the color of, for years now, is the DASH...the one thing consoles still can't do.
