I've thought about creating a thread like this for a while, but was too busy enjoying Trailblazers. Now someone else has started this thread, I feel like I should at least contribute.
For many years, Elite: Dangerous felt like an excellent game that could be the best game ever for old-school space sim nerds like me if it just realized its potential. It always fell just a little short. The recent updates (Thargoid war, PP 2.0) felt likes sparks of hope, but nothing groundbreaking.
Then came colonization, and suddenly we got something we never got before: A sense of creating our own HOME ins this huge galaxy. A sense of being able to influence the shape of the galaxy. A sense of creating something that doesn't just exist within our role-playing minds or a few lines of text (like a CG).
This could become the crown jewel in FDev's redemption story after years of being detached from the fanbase and the botched Odyssey release.
I am excited to see the explosion in player numbers and the positive reviews on Steam. It doesn't matter to me if the feature isn't perfect and has its bugs. All I see is a game that has a chance of realizing its potential and at the same time becomes profitable to its developers due to its incredibly dedicated fanbase that is willing to pay for an experience that comes close to a "second life in space". For the first time since I joined the community, it feels like the game is in good hands and headed into the right direction.
Thank you, FDev!
My only wish is for FDev not to treat this feature lightly and not to abandon it after fixing the bugs. They should carefully build on it and use it as one several tools to fill this galaxy (which is Elite's unique selling point!) with life. I would love to see more in-depth features such as seats of government with ARX-customized personal quarters and new voice recordings to have NPCs treat system architects as people of authority (same for FC owners). And who knows, if the game keeps being successful, maybe we'll get our customizable ship interiors one day, as well as some procedurally-generated life across the galaxy that would turn this into the game of our life-long dreams after all
