Hull repair limpets: has sense been pre-applied?

Hi All
i have to say, I think repair limpets are a terrible idea and are really not necessary for explorers and remove another element of risk from the game.
I would suggest that at least 95% of hull damage is down to pilot error and can easily be avoided if you're paying attention. This is just another attempt to take away responsibility for your own actions. If you make a mistake like fouling up a landing or crashing into stars then there should be repercussions that aren't simply waved away by some magic healing potion.

G

Well, I think that what about call danger (avoiding face planting on a star), I call snore fest (hours watching the same hyper jump animation with a few beige planets in between).

I'd rather have some dangerous (and interesting) stuff waiting for me in deep space, and if I survive, I'd be relieved to repair my hull and bring my findings back. Right now, indeed, I don't need hull repair in deep space, but if some explorers want them, I see nothing wrong with that.

Hello,

I understand the game(ey) reasons for specific limpet function modules, although logic-vise its stupid...
As you have allready written, one limpet controller with various software packages to be uploaded into launched limpet should be sufficient.

Yesterday evening, I was quite tired when I started my game session. I was in my Corvette and I took 2 "liberate" missions, just to find out, that I forgot to outfit hatchbreaker limpet controler (mission USS allready spawned). I traveled 5 jumps to the nearest hi-tech and got one, only to find out (allready inside the mission USS), that I forgot to buy limpets!
In the mission target system, there were only outposts in space. Luckily enough there was one planetary outpost, where I finally got those damn limpets.

Another attempt, again SuperCruise to the target body, again wait for USS spawn, finally - my target is ahead and I am equipped with 16 limpets (I know i know, but I am supercarefull now and have high stock of SCBs and Hull Reinforcements). That damnded DiamondBack Explorer was equipped with Point Defence and he was taking out one limpet after another... "GodKnowsHowMany" minutes later, without destroying the target, I ended out of limpets, 4/6 mission cargo. Time window for both missions was overdue and no more USSes spawned.

I quit the game and went to sleep :-D Next time I will try these missions again, BUT I will take 256 limpets !!!

Have a splendid day, fly dangerously! Karlos

You can target point defense subsystems. Just sayin'.

I'm OK with hull repair limpets, now that it's been confirmed they can't be used during combat.

I doubt I'll ever outfit any. On my first "real" exploration, I made it to Beagle Point and back, so I just don't see the need. Even though I limped back with my hull at 6%, I did make it (and the nervousness question of "will I make it?" added to the thrill of success).

OP this is very easily solved with 2 steps:

1) Make hull repair limpet controllers sufficiently heavy, so they are balanced against speed/jump range.
2) If you're currently taking hull damage, then any deployed limpets will be quickly destroyed by proximity damage.

Done. Fixed.

Remind me, who are hull limpets for, again? What was the point, again? I think they're rapidly becoming redundant for all but the most fringe case use. Great work, everyone. I should expect by beta, they will have no use at all. This is quite grand, as it will save testing them and providing feedback to the developer.

Hi Teh Smoo,

I feel like an idiot now, that such a obvious thing didnt come up my mind back then :-D I was trying to shoot his cargo bay doors (targeting that subsystem), but DBE is much more manouverable then corvette and he kept rotating to hide his "belly"... But PDs are located on top and should be shootable (easier to hit)... Will try next time.

Thank you for the TIP ! Karlos

That's the beautiful part. The PD needs to see things to shoot them, so if the PD can shoot your limpets, you can shoot IT.

i wonder if i ever manage to shoot chaff or point defense off a ship, without destroying the ship itself

I posted something about hull repair limpets to this effect. So when stealing cargo, you bring TWO limpet systems: one to pop the hatch, another to keep them repaired while you smash their subsystems. >:)
