-or-
an AX-combat newb tries to contribute without Guardian technology.
Short version, Anaconda with mostly turreted enhanced AX missile racks, 2 small laser beams and a ship-launched fighter with laser beams. For defence, shutdown field neutraliser & caustic sink launcher plus lots of meta-alloy hull reinforcements.
Ship build:
Long version:
When I saw the notice that payouts for hunting the Orthrus were being increased I thought I'd give it a try. I went after it with my AX Alliance Chieftain sporting guardian weapons.
"Wait, why are my weapons at 0% all of a sudden?"
So then I reconsidered. I have a multi-purpose Python that has 3 large, 2 medium hardpoints. I thought "ok since this Orthrus wrecks my Guardian tech let's launch Enhanced AX missiles at it." The best I achieved was to get it down to 23%. Close but no cigar.
Up to the events of HIP 22460 I'd been doing mainly exploration and trade. A little combat but it wasn't my thing. Even after the maelstroms I mainly went for the rescue missions, occasionally taking potshots at the Thargoids hanging around the stations.
I'd always wanted an Anaconda, mainly to have a jumpaconda in my fleet. I looked at the hardpoint options and thought that with a 5x AX weapon stabiliser I could get 4 large and 2 medium AX missile racks. With that build I managed to get the Orthrus to 6%. So close!
So I added a couple of beam lasers to the small hardpoints, long-range and thermal vent and nailed one! Awesome!
But I wasn't consistent, my timing on the field neutraliser was often off by a bit leaving me to sit and stew while Orthrus went on its merry way. That'll take a little more practice.
Just this morning I added the ship-launched fighter to the mix, so that his laser beams could help with the Thargoid's shields at the onset. On that attempt I nailed in on the first try.
So this is the attack plan:
And now for the most important bit. What to call my ship?
Option 1: Hunt the Orthrus (named after Hunt the Wumpus - other old farts on the forum will get the reference)
Option 2: Merry Xmas Mr Orthrus (because the Anaconda has the winter snowflake paintjob and named after the movie Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence, which some even older farts will get the reference to).
Feel free to pick apart my build and my technique, and see you out in the black!

So this is the attack plan:
- Drop out from the friendship drive at the Nonhuman signal 4 site.
- Get the weapons out.
- Launch the fighter with instructions to go after my target.
- When the Orthrus arrives, start firing, keeping the Anaconda's nose up to make sure that the small laserbeams can get past its ridiculous bow.
- Follow the Orthrus until it goes boom.
- Fire the caustic sink that's usually pretty full by now, if not overflowing.
- Rinse and repeat.
