Hyperspace Gates

To remove some of the tedium of long-distance spaceflight, why not introduce hyperspace gates (e.g. as found in Homeworld)?

These could have an entry point just like stations but require payment to use, to a specific part of the galaxy. EG. Have 10 of them spread throughout the galaxy.

You already have the code for jumping, deducting payments, and detecting docking/location of ships entering a port / access point.

Combined with faction control of regions, these would make for interesting gameplay in certain areas of the galaxy.

Another alternative is wormholes, like Homeworld Cataclysm.

No thanks please.
The galaxy is meant to be vast. If I can take a gate, and get to Colonia or SagA in minutes, what would be the point?

I get why people want this, but I just don't want to see it in this particular game. Supercruise is the only time compression we really need in this game.

In the first book they had something like this called faraway jump stations I think. It was pre- FSD

You are confusing the Faraway Jump System, a method of Hyperspace Travel, with an actual star system, it's not. The Farway System was the first method that enabled humans to travel FTL, so no that was in no way a fast travel system or stargate;

"The first commercially available hyperspace system was known as the "Faraway Jump". The Faraway system was far from perfect, however, depending on a complex network of monitoring satellites, branch lines, stop points and rescue stations – which took hundreds of years to establish – to operate smoothly.

P.S. - NO!

Defo not !
Galaxy needs to be vast!!! Unattainable in many lifetimes. The black must remain aloof. Exploitable and explorable.
My only thing Is maybe some more content out there.

Yep, traveling at multiples of the speed of light is sooooooo slow these days.

Some say we can travel at speeds fast than Sonic. But that's a can of worms I am NOT opening.

What is it that you want to visit that is "too far away" now? What would be the reason for going there? a check markl, I have visited places X, Y and Z?
We will soon get Fleet Carrier, and they will have a jump range of up 500 LY.

I'm new around here!
I wasn't proposing that there be hundreds of these things, nor that they be spread entirely throughout equally. Even 2 endpoints within the galaxy specific to a certain region would add variation.

I was certainly not proposing "instant gratification" (I am in a Vulture at the moment with a 20ly jump range so taking forever to get anywhere), nor was I trying to quash the beautiful vastness of space, or reduce it to nothing. I also wasn't trying to get rid of supercruise distances or time taken for travelling within a system.

I was only proposing a possibility to enable travel to certain other endpoints for some variation. If you look at edastro.com, you'll see a lot of places where few go and so travel is concentrated in a certain region. I thought it would be good to add variety.

You would be free not to use them, and enjoy travelling for weeks on end, of course!

Or use / build ships which don't "take forever".

You can already have your 20Ly ship make the journey more conveniently by building and travelling in a "taxi" and then having your ship transferred.

I repeat - NO JUMPGATES / WORMHOLES thanks.

But we already have options to make this better.

As you have probably done, engineer you FSD for range
You can use FSD Injection to boost your jump range.
You can also unlock the Guard FSD Booster module, that will give you a flat increase in jump range.
Size 1 - 4.00 LY
Size 2 - 6.00 LY
Size 3 - 7.75 LY
Size 4 - 9.25 LY
Size 5 - 10.54 LY

So we already have options that will increase our jump range. So a size 4 would boost your Vulture's jump range to 30 LY.

Then there are other ships more suitable if you want to move arund alot, Diamondback ships are not bad at combat, and have good jump range. So it comes down to player choice.

And then we have the mentioned build ship with long jump range, and travel to a station and then request transfer of your other ship, and not sitting idle when you wait for your Vulture, having a combat fitted Diamondback Scout, it will have 30 LY jumpprange with only engineered FSD, and you can add a Size 3 FSD Booster for another 7.75 LY jump range, almost twice as zippy around the bubble than your Vulture. And still a very competent combat ship.

And the we have White Dwarves and Neutron stars that can boost our jump range too. So we already have several options already to move around faster.

50/50 thargoidian jump-gate: you either get to your destination with half damage to all systems and you're corroded.
or
You are changed into a Scout and must fight your way back to another of your ships.

It's always advisable to check and see if there are other threads already on the same subject, that way it means we don't have to repeat everything we have already posted several times over. You're new here so we can cut you some slack, but in general both on player base and the fdev side is that this would be a bad/undesirable addition to the game.

Yeah, then, once you find one, and post in it - people will tell you off for "necro'ing" a thread.

Can't win!
