I am severely tempted to try out the Type-10 as an exploration ship. What are the Pros and Cons?

I am currently on my way back to the bubble after a short exploration trip out to a random point of interest. I am roughly 100 jumps away from home and this trip has shown me that while I do love the Anaconda's utility and jump range I am just not the biggest fans of its cockpit for exploration. It just seems confined and claustrophobic. So I was thinking about switching to another ship and obviously in my head I went straight for the Krait Phantom or the Asp because I love the Bubble style cockpits. But everyone uses those to explore and to be honest I find their designs to be a bit boring. And obviously taking cool screenshots of your ship in random places is like half the fun of exploring. So i decided I wanted to take a ship that not many people use. And the Type-10 fits the bill perfectly.

Pros

- Surprisingly despite the fact that the Battle Cow is a massive flying cathedral of steel and death normally it can get 45+ ly jump range with the help of an FSD booster once its stripped down

- Amazing cockpit view

- Unique exploration choice which would make the screenshots I take stand out a bit more than if I used a typical Exploration option like the Asp or Conda

- All the module space I would ever need for everything I would ever want

- I am told that it runs ice cold when engineered properly (If someone could confirm that for me and/or tell me how to achieve that I would appreciate it)

Cons

- 47ly is completely respectable, but is a massive step down from the same set-up on a Conda or a Asp

- It has the turning radius of a small moon while in Supercruise from what I can tell

- Landing it on planets will be.....not the greatest experience of my life.

So does anyone have any thoughts? Additional Pros or Cons that I missed? Have any of you personally tried the Type-10 as an exploration ship?

I've never flown one personally, but I was supposed to be interdicted by one flown by a pirate last night, and judging by how it was turning in SC...well, let's just say it may be quicker to get out and find a ship that's heading in the direction you want to go... :)

Yeah the Supercruise is going to be physically painful, but considering I am used to flying a Conda and a Cutter I don't think its going be shockingly bad.

Also the only time that will matter anyway is when I am scanning planets and given my usual luck that won't be often :ROFLMAO:

I do agree that it's an quite exotic explorer, but Type-10 is one of those ships where dropping out of SC, pointing it the the right direction then low wake, is a not-so-crazy way to fly them.
Also since it has the general shape of a bisquit, i wonder how it will fare while landing on a 2.5G planet using minimal thrusters

I am Way out on a deep trip in a type 10 at this very moment. Your Pros are spot on.

My Twitter feed for my Cmdr featuring my trip in the T-10. Lots of pics.

1) It does run ice cold. I can FSD charge while scooping with an 8a scoop and jump before I overheat.

2) Landing on planets can be an issue, but it have never had to abort on a planet because of it.
If I can land here then you need not worry about landing a T-10

3) I have a SLF because the T-10 is slow and exploring belts or anomalies can be faster if you can pop out in an SLF

4) It is very slow to turn in SC. But that is no big deal. It's only a problem if you loop of shame. If I do need to do a 180 I just drop out of sc and flip in normal space. Its no problem.

5) The view is great which for me was one of the top 2 reason I chose it

6) It looks great in screenshots but don't do for a dark paint job. You lose the details if shooting in darker areas.

7) The SRV comes out the back, facing the rear. Its easy to redock the SRV.

I never land on anything above 1.5g while out exploring anymore. I had a very close call in my Conda after being out in the black for a month or so and I have sworn off even attempting it in the future lol

Its just not worth the risk to me.

1) Awesome. Glad to hear that. Overheating is my #1 fear while exploring.
2) Also good to hear.
3) I never thought of that. Does it add alot of weight? (Never used a SLF)
4) I am happy to say I haven't had to do the loop of shame in awhile ever since I learned the 7sec trick lol
5) I love the view. It was my #1 reason to even consider it. The screenshots of the Cockpit are awesome.
6) I actually prefer the default paint I think. If I did switch I would choose white I think.
7) Love it. I hate the little song and dance of loading the SRV in my Conda lol

isn't that true of all ships?

I should have added that the SLF does the same, which is why I mentioned it.. In some ships the SLF shoots out the front. This is advantageous because you don't shoot it into things you want to go look at, or planet surfaces.

not a huge amount. Im running with 45ly range (might be 42ly I'll edit when I get time to check) I am of the school that jump range is NOT king. I am not going for the extreme places on this trip, so 42/45 is perfectly fine. I have 2 SRVs 2 different types of SLF (for screenshot variety and 7a shields and 7a thrusters. Its a build that I can use at Colonia or Sag station should I end up there.

With those shields, Thrusters and the T-10 hull I have had no issue on 5g planets (Most Gs If found on this trip. I have NOT fitted an explorer set of modules but they are fully engineered to explorer spec. It's a fun ship and build to use when stopping often are going for those first discoveries in the Codex.

Oh okay yeah I might try it. This is the build I have right now. Its not perfect, but I don't have all the engineers unlocked so its the best I can do.

(sorry shortlink isn't working on Coriolis for some reason)

The Type-7 is the perfect exploration ship IMO, having the best of almost all worlds. I like it so much that I "share" one between my two CMDRs.

I was going to cite supercruise maneuverability as well. But if you can handle the cutter, you'll be fine. I just did a build to see how it would go. Not a bad explorer actually. This build is virtually gank proof, has all the mod cons (all equipment required for core mining, repair and collector limpets, even a decent MRP and HRP), and still jumps 45ly!

The T-7 does everything regarding exploration better then the T-10, except it has no fighter bay and it runs hotter.

Other cons against the T-10 are already named, such as supercruise & normal space agility, higher price and less jump range.

yeah I know the T-7 is a better option, but I am not gonna lie. I ruled it out because I don't like the way it looks lol

Good choice.

I think the turning radius and landing problems are more the result of status quo opinion making something more worse every time told.

Anyways, in addition to all the good things you found:

  • Look amazing with the ship kit and a dark paint job if frontier are still in your good graces (im so glad i got mine kitted up before frontier went sour).
  • Has some nice thruster sounds, sounds the closest to jet engines at full pips.
Yeah the critical thing to not find yourself exploding home is a darker paint job. Combine the shoddy modelling, shoddy colors, space madness it doesn't take long from experience.

EDIT: Bonus tip: because of the hull mass not using 6d components doesn't impact your jump too much.
