I can play Alpha with crappy hardware!!!

Ok, so by now you're all probably aware of the minimum specs for Alpha: quad core processor, 2GB RAM and a 1GB graphics card.

Me, I have a dual core E5400, 4GB RAM, and a 384MB Nvidia GeForce 8800 GS graphics card. In blind hope I decided to install the Alpha anyway, and I can actually play!

Admittedly, on High graphical settings it's something of a slideshow, but turn those setting down to Low and I can play at a framerate where I notice no slowdown at all.

What I guess I'm saying is, Frontier fibbed and I'm glad I didn't take them at their word! :D

That's good news. Would you be willing to post a screen shot or two? I have a low end rig myself and I'd be interested to see what it looks like on low settings. All the twitch streams to be on very high end kit.

Wow, sounds great!

I just wish that Shop thingie actually worked.

Now this is the post I was hoping to see, lower specced computers and how they will run Elite.
I personally hope I can run the game on my Laptop, which is not exactly overpowered, lol

Hmm interesting with all of us worrying about minimum specs and realising our aged machines don't match, this is good news. Not that I think my even older machine will do the job, but its still promising. I am desperately hoping I'll be able to get the cash together to get a good enough machine when second round beta comes up, which is when I should be jumping on.

No problem. Fraps would only allow me to take a bitmap screenshot though :( My resolution is set to 1680 x 1050 and the game is set to 60fps.

Definitely still looks playable. 60fps is super important so it looks like the game engine they have is pretty robust. Still I think I might upgrade for the bells and whistles. At least we know it playable on low end kit now, thanks for this.

Great news indeed.

That should mean my 3-year-old top-of-the-line-back-then rig should be able to handle ED, possibly without even requiring any upgrades :D

Nice - so it should run very well on my machine. I'm upgrading anyway though; the machine is beginning to struggle with some other games.

I have a similar spec PC. What are your ingame gfx settings to get your rig to play well? and what resolution are you playing at?

You have to remember that the game is missing lot of things and on release you might not even be able to play it on low, but never the less this give hope to people with crapy Pc's :)

I have a quad-core Q6600 and a Radeon 7790. For most of the missions I could run everything on max just fine, but on the last mission it was unplayable because of the high number of ships - everything just juddered. Tweaking down some of the graphical niceties helped a lot.

Do *not* mistake the first missions as being indicative of the game's full requirements. At the same time there will be optimisations to come, of course.

I'm running on a (nearly) 6 year old set up.... 2.6ghz Core2 Duo, 8GB RAM, ATI HD4800 512MB GPU.... and it runs really really well :D

Very pleased :D

I see FPS drop from 50-60 (limited?) down to 30-40 in the final scenario. My guess is that it's CPU limited, the GPU isn't getting warm or sounding like a turbine... Oddly, with an 8-core AMD FX-8320, I only seem to get 45% utilisation. Does that mean it's using 4 threads and only 4?

+1

I have to agree with this whole heartedly. Same thing happened with me. So beware.

Time for me to upgrade my set up before beta I think.

Oh my, I've just had another wee..... Thinking do i get a better joystick and stick with the 1gb GTX460  or have more eye candy
