I can see the orientation of other ships. Why not orientation of Orbitals?

Not entirely accurate, as you'll see if you can play beta or when 2.3 goes live. There's a great variance of where it points, with all of them tending to be within some degrees of the planet. I actually don't think I've ever seen one that is pointed right at the planet, from the simple fact that if that was true, you'd see the planet from inside.

Have come across quite a few stations where you can see the planet through the maillot. Anyway, has been explained by the the devs on a few occasions, the mailslot faces 45° to the equator of the planet, towards the north pole.

I love the way we get six pages of argument, claims that it'd be a bigger job than porting Windows 95 onto a TI-80, retractions, counter-retractions and flame warring, beofre anybody realises they've already done it and it's live in the beta build right now. Go figure.

There have been all sorts of theories, some said the mail-slot pointed at one of the pole of the planet it orbits (not true), some say it points directly toward the plant's equator (also not true). Once you see how the mail-slots are actually oriented you will see why it was so difficult previously to line-up properly.

OfftheRails - Until I necro'd this thread reporting that this was now possible on page 5 via the inpending 2.3 release, posts previous to mine on page 5 were 4 months previous with no further posts. Which is why I posted the update. Just sayin.

Got a picture? I'm happy to admit that I'm wrong if I am, but after playing since premium beta, I really cannot think of a situation where I've been leaving the station and seen the planet in full view before I exit (as in the old school Elite style).

I am in a completely different country to my gaming rig..

From memory - Q1 Eridani - Windt Terminal

Redott system (Pirate station orbiting the planet motherload)

Firdaus - Robert Aitken Orbital

Reread your previous post, just to be clear I am not claiming that any station points directly at the center of a planet. These are stations that will have the planet fill the mailslot view before exiting.

This isn't impossible. If the planet is HUGE, and the station is very close to the planet it is orbiting, the station can still be orientated 45deg north of the planet's equator AND still have the planet visible through the mail-slot from inside the station.

Nobody in this thread from last year realised the feature was actually live in today's beta build? How peculiar.

Yeah, although the devs moved a bunch of stations because people complained about the long SC times in and out of the gravity wells. Am fairly certain the stations I listed are still the same. Q1 was my home base for the first 8 months after Gamma release, although it has been a while since I've been back to Q1 & Redott.

You can slingshot using gravity assist in normal space flight, but not in SC..read up on SC theory - it is well documented on the forums!

In regard to the drop out at stations..it mixes up a fairly repetitive task & besides, I like going in from behind occasionally! *ahem*

I also heard you get less little ships that way as well.

Windt is a nice one. I recognize the name, although it's probably been a while. But a low orbit around a gas giant, that's a bit of a cheat, isn't it? Hard to NOT point at some place where the planet arc isn't seen. :)
