Newcomer / Intro I can't figure out how to target/catch pirates from supercruise

So I've looked at wiki's and youtube videos... and I still don't get it.

When I find a wanted target, for my pirate mission... I always see them in supercruise speed... I then click 't' to target them and can follow them in supercruise.. but they always either fly past me, or me past them.. I never get the 'safe engage' warning, or know when to jump out of supercruise.. and when I do.. they are always gone.

What am I doing wrong here??

... Ehh no... I just have my regular starter ship... the mission I just took didn't say anything about that....

You need to buy the FS Interdiction module. You can install it instead of the cargo rack or the basic discovery scanner.
Then you need to assign it to a fire group.
After that, when you find your target, you need to get behind him in frame shift and activate the module using the assigned fire group. That will trigger the interdiction 'minigame' where you need to keep the target centered in your crosshairs.

You need to buy an interdictor module to be able to pull targets out of supercruise. Put it into a fire group, get behind the target and fire away, if you are in range an interdiction tether will be established and you will then have to win the interdiction mini-game for both of you to be dropped out of supercruise into normal flight. Beware! At speeds over 1000Km/s both ships will take damage due to the violent nature of the interdiction. If your target submits, however, there will be no damage incurred. To submit, simply throttle down to 0 while still keeping the escape vector in your sights and after a few seconds you will be dropped out into normal flight.

Also please notice that FSD drives have a cooldown of 40 seconds after a successful interdiction, whereas the cooldown upon submitting is considerably less (5-10 seconds).

Don't bother with getting interdictor and pulling out the pirates yourself. You get damaged with every successful and unsuccesful interdiction and it's generally too much work.

Instead, load up some cargo (it doesn't really matter, but I usually carry a ton of gold with me :D) and then THEY will interdict YOU :) If you then pull back your throttle and submit, you won't get damaged, your FSD cools down quicker (in case you find yourself in need of running away) and it is simply... simpler. :)

You probably want to drop out of supercruise at the Unidentified Signal Sources (USS), as this is where pirates (and lots of other things) hang out. You will need to check out several USSs' to find what you are looking for. You don't need the Interdiction Device to hunt pirates this way.

If your mission is one of those to kill a certain number of pirates like 3 or 4 or 5, in a certain system or a couple of systems, you dont need to catch them in supercruise.
You need to look for (while supercruising), USS (Unidentified Signal Source). They pop up every now and then. Some of them may have those pirates, others will have just random NPCs or some lost cargo.
If that system has for exemple a Gas Giant with rings, and if in those rings are some RES (Resource Extration Sites), usualy in those you can find pirates too.

Those are the best spots to find pirates in a system. But remember that, the USS are random so you may need a few tries.

^ Nah. Just kill your throttle (30km/s) and the USS will appear right next to you in drop-out range.

USS chasing is a complete and utter waste of time for the pirate mission. Just do as someone else suggested and carry a ton of gold or something in your cargo bay, then drop into a local resource extraction site (or if there isn't one of those then the nav beacon) and fly around a bit. You'll find one pirate after another scanning you and saying, "So what goodies do you carry?" or something like that. Bring along a kill warrant scanner if you want to make a bit of extra cash. In fact, if credits are what you're after then ignore the bulletin board pirate missions and just go to a resource site and bounty hunt. You should make an easy 300K credits worth of bounties by the time the ammo runs out on your multi-cannons.

I use Ethgrezian Bud for my bait. Suckas drop me out in space, and then I introduce them to entropy.
Is it sadistic to prefer to blow out canopies?

Just Sayin' :D

Im a brand new player though, Starnoob... with only 10k credits to my name. Me being able to make 300k worth of credits of bounties sound... a bit... over the top - does it not?

You will be fine if you keep picking on Sideys and Eagles. Vipers if you feel brave. Let's say that everyone up to rank Expert should be doable for you, even with loaned lasers
The bounty on those ships usually vary between 1.500 and 10.000 Credits, depending on the rank. 20-30 kills will take you something like an hour or two if you're unlucky and that should set you up for an Adder pretty nicely. Then you can move up the food chain with Class 2 weapon above your head. Everything is much faster from that moment :)
