I can't get enough of smuggling.

Just the motto of Stevenson's Whirlwind Adventures*

"If you're not willing to wreck your ship, you're not really in a hurry!"

Fly fast, Commander, and ignore all the smoke and sparks. It's perfectly normal.

Haven't really given smuggling much of a try except for sneaking in the odd criminal after a sightseeing tour. One thing I find odd: everyone says get some distance and rush through the mailslot at maximum speed, but I just pop silent running and dock at a leisurely speed with no problem. Is there a reason why I should be going in at max speed? I mean, I'd rather sneak in than charging through like a bull.

I never "charge like mad", but I guess I am so used to docking by now that its just happens naturally fast - time's wasting! :)

90% of time I cruise in slow and silent, every now and again I have to boost into the station.

Haha, so effortless skill then.

But yeah, with silent running I've been strolling in at a speed of <150. Is this not consistent and I'm just getting lucky? Really not sure why I need a fast ship for this.

Anyway, I'm actually looking to get into more smuggling and will make a dedicated smuggling ship soon. Kinda like the idea of using my Dolphin for this. "Why officer, I'm just an innocent space taxi driver. The seats totally aren't stuffed with narcotics".

How comfortable are you with the concept of your ship overheating?

Personally, I hate it. If I have naughty stuff on board, I just boost in because I don't want to overheat and never equip heatsinks. It's the same with shields. My religion prohibits armour stacking.

You got to smuggle in a conda... It's like hiding a elephant at a Thomas Edison Convention.....

One time doing passenger missions I had a brain fart and took a criminal one on accident. Leaving the station kinda looked like this.

Where's the fun in going slow?

I would probably go with something like the following:

https://coriolis.edcd.io/outfit/cob...1/kA==.Aw1/kA==..EweloBhBGA2EoFMCGBzANokMK6A=

Engineer the thrusters for speed and engineer and set the Power Distributor for engine, try to apply cooling to the power plant, (so a 3 may be required instead)

Speed and boosts are your friend, and as cold as you can. Extra tanks are for 200ly range rather than having to fill her up on the fly.

FSD I would be tempted to make fast charge. I have one I used on an Adder that you can fire up after 2 secs. Its quite fun when you are running from things, as you start charging before they can turn to face you.

Unfortunately, I find smuggling about as challenging and fun as a bog standard cargo run.

No fail on scan, or persistent security chasing you down, means it's just not smuggling anymore.

I casually 'smuggle' passengers and whatnot in my slow exploration Anaconda.

It's even painted white, and no one cares.

Where are the good ol days before engineered ships?

Where silent running would burn you up in about a minute. Forcing you to turn off everything and fly at full speed hoping to hit the mail slot from 10km. Then turning your power back on just in time to hit your thrusters and keep you from smashing against the back wall. (Like ships doing this wouldn't get noticed by the station police in the first place) All the while praying someone with a scanner wasn't already targeting you.

Smuggling has been dumbed down too far since the engineers have been able to make almost invisible ships. The only real challenge has been surface stations where you have nowhere to run from their scanners. Bring back the way the Robigo Runs were handled. Something that took a couple hours to complete where it was all or nothing. Where losing your ship was a real possibility. And change them up like you do the CG's.
