I can't use fixed lasers, yet can use fixed projectiles such as multicannons.

lasers travel much faster than bullets and are also much more accurate. That makes them very unforgiving if your aim isn't flawless.

Just keep practicing you'll get it. I've been forcing myself to fly strictly fao and I'm starting to (God I hate these words) git gud. I'm working with an Xbox Elite controller too I can't stand the feel off kbm and my plush recliner is really made for a throttle and stick.

Anyone else think that's really odd?

Not really, it was part of my journey to using fixed too :D

If you want to make progress to using fixed lasers I'd recommend trying some with the long range mod first. The micro-gimbaling effect you get with them will snap them to a target and at the longer range the target appears to be moving less and requires less control to hit. It's a good idea to target a module to get the hit box up.

You may also find that yaw on the twtichy smaller ships is not helping. I use vJoy to dampen yaw response down on ships like the Vulture which I find are far too twitchy for fixed lasers.

Of course after a while You find yourself dialling it up as you get used to it.

He thinks he hits with the bullets. I mean SOME gotta hit when saturating the area, no?

Some gimbals will still hit the target at close range...point blank more or less...even after they use chaff. Although fixed is better with range...especially long range over 4.5km. Questions like this can have different answers just depending on the ship...not all ships are good with fixed...take the clipper fer example...

I rather think some like to lead that stream of bullets onto the target. Sort of "iterative" targetting. And leading the target kinda brings you on intercept course whereas lasers might conflict with your wish to point the nose a different way for manouvering purposes.

Unless you are like Starbuck good I have a hard time believing that the boost in damage from fixed weapons outweighs the shots missed compared to gimbled. Am I wrong?

You are quite correct. Nobody's aim is so good that they get more dps from fixed, all else being equal.

However, there are 2 qualifiers... 1) The 2 most powerful (base) weapons in the game (discounting frag cannon) are fixed only, and... 2) Using fixed weapons completely negates the biggest damage mitigator in the game, chaff.

So swings and roundabouts really. I dare say that if you are good with fixed, you will get more dps with fixed multicannons against a chaff user than an average pilot using gimballed multicannons.

I use fixed occasionaly - mainly on the Ieagle - but, I realy can't justify them for most real world (heh) use - I can't ever think why I would want to be pointing at the thing I'm shooting at - especially with mutliple targets.
I have two Guardian plasma charger's on the Python just now - cos the big blue splashy boom is so much fun, but will probably go back to dual packhounds on those slots as it blows up things behind me while I'm doing something more important.
Also worth noting I'm on pc using Hotas - I can see where if you are using a game controller it might suit fixed weapons more.

Agreed.

I have no issue using fixed for the big hitters but the OP was talking about lasers and multicannons. I went fixed for a while a long time back but I just found that things died easier and my flight paths were better using gimbled in 99% of engagements. When they chaff I just unlock and use the gimbles as fixed until the chaff runs out where the gimbles again do a better job while letting me fly a better targetting resolution. Its not optimal PvP flying but it gets the job done better for me most of the time.

No doubt. Fixed is a personal choice, not necessarily an optimal one.

I've only now started to deselect a target if it chaffs so I can use my gimbals as fixed, rather than waiting for the chaff to dissipate...I've surprised myself as to how often I actually make hits, so I may make the transition...this in a Courier generally.
