I can't use fixed lasers, yet can use fixed projectiles such as multicannons.

I've only now started to deselect a target if it chaffs so I can use my gimbals as fixed, rather than waiting for the chaff to dissipate...I've surprised myself as to how often I actually make hits, so I may make the transition...this in a Courier generally.

Stick with gimbaled. You can't turn fixed into gimbaled...

I ignore chaff completely - if your in front of me you'll still get hit as I'm close and probably about to fly right through you - or your behind me, and as Italian racing drivers say "what's behind me doesn't matter". All my ships are designed to be fast and survive - I don't much care if another players ship blows up or not - NPC's usually don't survive the first two salvos and sure as heck can't keep up or on my "six".
I really don't go in for all this ridiculous "duelling" that folk indulge in - your just a speed bump - get out of the way :p

Unless you are like Starbuck good I have a hard time believing that the boost in damage from fixed weapons outweighs the shots missed compared to gimbled. Am I wrong?

There is nothing like taking down a small agile ship quickly with fixed multis - it's the most satisfying way to make a kill - especially with the new AI jinking like Lionel Messi! Many are way better pilots than 99% of cmdrs...it's just a pity SJA tied one hand behind their backs with their load-outs.

'Jumped into a Threat 4 USS with 3 high ranked Vultures - all with SCBs - in my own Vulture with fixed Multicannons. Holy crap it must have taken 6+ mins to kill them plus a replen. For PvE, this was a great fight...true dogfighting that you never get in PvP due to the ease of opening up significant distance for the less agile ship.

Fixed multis are the hardest weapons to unleash dps on the small, agile ships; lasers are much easier - there is no contention about that! Maybe you are on the autism spectrum...not sarcasm...a genuine possible explanation.

I've personally always sucked with weapons that require smooth continuous tracking of targets, in any type of game - like assault rifles in first person shooters.

Give me bolt action or semi-automatic weapons!
That's kinda why I prefer plasma accelerators and even regular railguns for fixed weapons.

Which reminds me, I gotta work on unlocking those darn shock cannons.

I fail to see how my comment makes me autistic but hey. I was just commenting that it's easier to deal more DPS with gimble than fixed when using MCs and lasers. I would still argue this to be true. Where Autism falls into this I'm baffled?

Last time I tried fixed lasers I was sketchy at best. I recently started using PACs and I feel like I do better with them. I still whiff some volleys, usually because I didnt anticipate a change of direction, but I seem to have decent enough accuracy, so I guess you arent alone OP!

I combine turrets with fixed weapons on large ships.

They cover every blind spot and fry anything below a Vulture in mere seconds.

In addition I use two fixed long range PA's to deliver insane damage to large and most medium sized ships.
FAS and FDS occasionally get annoying by being a bit harder to hit for being agile but they won't stand more than 3 direct PA hits and get constantly hit by turrets... at least if the get fixed soon...

The aiming circle for fixed projectile weapons is consistent and easy to see... compare that with the enemy ship itself which keeps changing in visual size and orientation, and is crudely marked by three big red triangles. OP's predicament is understandable. :)
