I don't like any of the on-foot cosmetics.

I really would like to give fdev some money for on-foot cosmetics, but they're...oddly styled.

The thing I've noticed is that they're so BUSY. Every single one is absolutely covered in tiny little details or muddled patterns which don't show up anywhere but in the character screen(because it's rare to get close enough to notice), but don't improve the look of things.

Someone on reddit said it best; they all look more like costumes than something you'd actually wear. The Strike Combatant pack, for example:

It looks like something you'd wear to Comicon, not into battle.

Even the more realistic ones tend to have a fantasy vibe to them. Nomad, for example:

It's not BAD, but what's the deal with that massive pauldron? The massive scarf? Meanwhile, the body remains way too bulky, way too busy. The scifi equivalent of a dress made of belts:

Can't we get some more streamlined designs? Dune, for example, had some really good designs that felt realistic.

And as for faces, we seem to either completely cover the face or not cover the face at all. Why not split the difference?

I put a lot of effort into my character's face, after all, it's annoying to not see it.

Powerplay 2.0 has actually made me care about on-foot content again. Let me actually make myself look good!

Just makes me think Teletubbies.

All the suits seem to be rather bulky or random so I tend to use the old clothing, but that is rather limited in colour and style.

It's such a weird mix of styles, much like ship skins. I could deal with the 'remote outrider' style outfits, if we even had anything resembling that in ED. Where are the indy settlements with remote settlers? Space ranchers? Space hermits? Every single place is an antiseptic corpo holding. 🤷‍♂️

Now that I've written that, cultural lines would've been a better approach. Here's what's in style in Fed territory. Here's the Alliance. Independents. Imperials. 🤷‍♂️

Part of the problem is their backend design. All of these are packs of items that you attach to your base suit, if I'm not mistaken.

There are just so many ways in which you can design a lower sleeve before it starts looking out of place. Especially when it's not the original artist that designed the base suit. That's why they end up looking like costumes - because in a sense.. they are just that. Not much different than the Halloween pumpkin helmet and Christmas sweater costume parts.

They need to take a more classical approach where they have a single artist design a new suit from the ground up, make it a cohesive product, and make the game engine be able to swap an original Maverick for example, with the new design entirely. I don't care so much about being able to swap a pauldron between my Maverick and my Dominator - I just want it to look good!

There's also a thing called lead artist / art director. I hope they still have that position designated for E: D and they're not just commissioning new assets randomly to whomever on the art team is available that month...

Yeah, the super technical ones like the mining ones or the gasmask ones aren't terrible - they're arguably the best honestly. But they're a very niche style that I don't think most people are going to want.

The trouble is we seem to have gritty and realistic, bulky and comicon, and that's it. We need more than that. Imperial sexy and refined. Federal straightforward and practical. Crazy cult robes, LYR scientist outfits...all sorts of options, so people can look like their preferences!

Totally agree—the designs feel all over the place! Some of them are so overloaded with details that they don’t even read well in-game. Would love to see more streamlined, functional suits that actually feel like something a space explorer would wear instead of a cosplay convention outfit.

And now I'm sure, the next thing we'll see is a massive, massive helmet (I mean pumpkin/snowman sized), but instead of the usual scarf or hood, it will rock a blue wig!

This.

For me, practicality is the deal-breaker.

Why would anybody think "I am wearing a perfectly viable spacesuit that adequately serves it's purpose as both clothing and protection but now I shall adorn it further by wearing a hat on top of the helmet and wrapping various rags, belts and sashes around it, thus impeding movement and creating a risk that the suit will become entangled in the tat I have added"?

As for the combat-focused suits, they just look silly - like somebody's first attempt at a Fallout Brotherhood of Steel cosplay.

I had exactly the same experience as the OP.
I bought a heap of Arx, to buy a Mandalay, so I figured I'd spend some of them on playing dress-up-dolly but there's just nothing that doesn't look absurd.

Going back to Fallout, when I play Fallout 4 I always stick with the medium combat armour.
The heavy armour is more protective but it just looks way too clunky.
Somebody at FDev should have a browse of the best armour mod's for Fallout 4 on Nexusmods and use that to give them an idea of what most people want.
Main thing is, for me, that it has to look "viable" - it has to look like there's a reason it looks the way it does, that it's isn't contrived or with parts added as an affectation.

I mean, seriously, who decides to try and wear a cowboy hat over a spacehelmet?
Is it held in place with double-sided sticky tape?
Before heading out of my ship, I spend 15 minutes taping my hat to my helmet so I can look ridiculous if somebody else sees me?
Bonkers!

If that’s the fashion… I remember people intentionally going outside in shell suits and there’s people today who actually wear crocs 😱

I'd say this applies to cosmetics overall. There are some things you'd like sometimes, but mostly it's a struggle to find anything pleasing enough to purchase. And it's not even as if they didn't have suitable assets for cosmetics, just that the stuff that arrives in the store is meh.

We're talking about a game where a handful of guys doing Uber runs decide the fate of billions of people in a system. The cosmetics are just matching the game at this stage....
