Newcomer / Intro I don't understand piloting at all. I really don't...

I bought this game expecting a rather cool(if deep) fighter space game. I watched streams and stuff and thought this looked cool. Little did I know the controls for something as simple as flying are the stupidest most frustrating thing I have ever used.

I just...wanna be able to fly/steer with my mouse. For basic..up/down/left/right. I wanna be able to key my rolls to Q and E, and strafe to A and D, can I?

Essentially...I just wanna be able to fly like freelancer.

Ill worry about all the advanced controls later...I just need to make flying less of a nightmare...is this possible.

The current scheme makes me spin endlessly in space...and i cant even begin to tell you how often I forgot mouse doesn't turn me.

Help.

Sincerly,

stupid pilot.

You can set every control to your liking, the settings possibilities are almost endless. That said, i gave up with mouse cause i had the same problems that you have (others really like mouse/keyboard). I got a cheap xbox-controller and now everything works fine. Takes a bit getting used to, but i like it.

Of course, a lot of people get a HOTAS for this.

Not that, unfortunately. He wants Freelancer, but he bought Elite.

The flight model is good, just different from what you're used to Novasterone.
I suggest a simple joypad (Xbox 360 works egregiously) or even a cheap stick.

Think about planes in space, not Freelancer.

If it still doesn't stick to you, well I am sorry but I'm afraid this will not be the game for you...

By going into options you will have a truckload of possibilities to setup the game anyway you want in terms of bindings.

If you expect to fly like in Freelancer (pointing your mouse where you want to go) then no...that isn't what this game is about. ;)

HOTAS is Hands On Throttles and Stick- essentially a combination of flight sim controls... Thrustmaster Warthog for example.
I have it and it's awesome but not cheap.

Playing on a laptop I very quickly got fed up with the trackpad, despite trying various binding setups with it. I do have a Saitek FLY-5 joystick which is ok, but again not always convenient.

In the end I decided to go entirely keyboard-only for flight controls. Works fine for me, and I can hold my own in combat, certainly against NPCs. I prefer PvE play, and I did ok in the Lugh conflicts :)

As YoBuck says, you can rebind all your controls to your liking in Options -> Controls.

I made a post a while back about my keyboard-only bindings. Perhaps it may provide some use for you:

I to had this thought when first playing that left and right yaw should be controlled on the mouse and not roll but I would urge you to stick with it as rolling and pitching is the only fast viable method of tracking an enemy. If as you suggest you will be going down the pew pew route I would urge you to get used to the controls.

Or if you want go to options controls and change the mouse x axis to yaw then define roll left/right keys. One thing I did for a while as a midstep was to leave the mouse x axis as roll but turn on the option to roll into yaw.

As others have said, you can redefine all the controls to your liking from the game menu. Take your time with this, get them to your liking so that you can fly the way that works best for you.

People have mentioned HOTAS, I have one here's a link http://www.saitek.com/uk/prod/x55.html It's two joysticks. In the case of the X-55 the left one is the throttle - these tend to be for the left hand. And has loads of buttons for the more advanced controls. I've programmed mine so that the slider switch is a reverse gear, and the throttle part acts like an accelerator. The rest of the buttons are programmed for various controls - cargo hatch, lights sensor range etc. The right joystick has my pitch roll and yaw controls, not to mention all the buttons that are programed for menu navigation weapons and so on.

If you get your controls how you want them, so that you feel comfortable controling your ship, you'll enjoy the game a whole lot more.

Ah, that's.. not going to happen. It's all in the heritage, really. This game is born from a much earlier game, which had pitch/yaw/roll style controls, rather than the very Wing Commander "point and go" arcade controls- slightly flight sim in its heritage, almost.

I'm afraid that it's one of the key attractions, and very unlikely to ever change. The second game in this series ("Frontier") introduced those sorts of controls, but they really detracted from the feel. So, as dissapointing as it might be to hear, I don't think you'll get your wish. What I'd suggest is that you practise in the tutorials (where you don't lose anything from flying like a crazy) until it "clicks". If it never clicks, then it's possible that the game isn't for you- which is a shame, obviously, but different strokes etc..

If you can have a go at playing on a proper chunky joystick, you might enjoy it more. However, I'd not suggest spending money on one- borrow one, maybe?

Strafe ???? Hey mate, it s not CoD, it's Elite...

In ED, the lateral thrusters let you strafe, "mate" :D

I'm late to the party, sounds like you got it figured but just in case:
The biggest problem with the default binds is roll is set to mouse left/right whereas you want 'yaw' on left/right.
Remember the mouse axis are analogue, so in your controls setup just click on 'mouse yaw - analogue' and move the mouse sideways. If it ends up the wrong way you can either just set it again (and move the mouse the other way) or 'invert' that axis.
Welcome to ED ;)

Yeah turn the mouse roll off as soon as possible, and if you really want a good experience, then the joystick is the way to go

I think yaw is too slow to be your go-to method of turning. Roll and pitch to turn is faster by far. You'll never be able to fight if you rely upon yaw to turn.

Roll and pitch is faster than yaw, I timed it.

I stopped using mouse at all, not exact enough for me.

I use keyboard only.
Arrow keys up/down pitch left/right roll left right num keypad 1/3 yaw left right

I don't get into many fights but have killed NPCs when needed to.
