Oh, I agree. However, when I asked about going from a Type 7 to a Python some time back, that was the sales pitch I heard lol.
To be fair, I think my Python would have benefited a lot from more Engineering but I'd simply not spent the time on it. I got it out again for a specific role and it performed adequately.

Yeah I was scared of engineering when I heard the word "grind". So I took a visit and I realized I had already tons of material for the blueprints I cared. Still most of them are unlocked, but I am in no hurry.
As an aside, I've read posts of people claiming you can get stupidly rich once you have a Cutter
If you can afford a Cutter, you probably don't have much use for more money.
Oh, extra thanks to 777Driver as I'd not even have the option to try a Cutter without his generosity a short while back. Have a good Christmas mate!

If I buy the Cutter and equip it well...I'll feel poor. One gets accustomed to being a Billionaire lol.
I'm sort of in a relaxed mission-taking mood this eve. Just taking Passenger, Cargo and Data missions and letting them decide my destination based on what system has the most offers going to it. I'm doing this in my Type 7. I had seriously considered getting the Type 10 first, but then I went all grind last night. Literally just last night. I started Imperial Rank: None 100% and ended the session Imperial Rank: Duke 5%. So, after being taken over my OCD last night (that' the only logical explanation) I almost felt obliged to buy a Cutter today lol.

I would heartily recommend the Imperial Cutter over the Type-10 for pretty much any role except maybe anti-xeno combat? It’s not a perfect ship, but it sure is a really good one!
I am leaning in that direction now... but I will add a little more cash buffer first I think

Here’s my trading build if you want a starting point? It’s reasonably engineered of course:

Really happy with it so far. 328M from Jameson Memorial. You might not need the Class 8A PP or the Class 8A thrusters to start out with, especially with engineering. Of course as you earn more money back you can build on this and make it even better!
It seems that I get to be the pragmatic Commander - I did the Cutter and Corvette grinds back-to-back (which is not a good time) for one simple reason; just in case Frontier changes how Ranking is done, or how those ships are obtained. At that time, and still today, they are easily obtained by anyone that has the time and fortitude to grind them out. In the future, this may not be the case.
So, in short, I bought them, so they would get grandfathered into any possible changes. Even if you don't do anything with it, I would say go ahead and just buy the chassis, and take your time kitting it out.
As for the ship itself - I thoroughly enjoy it every time I pull it out of the barn, it's one of my favorites for the things I primarily do in the game, and there is nothing in the game sexier than the Gutamaya Girls in the Midnight paint.

My cutter is my favorite ship in the game. Awe inspiring shields, great speed, highest cargo capacity, good jump range....it's got it all. I have modules for 3 different builds on it - I fly its combat build (8prismatic reinforced shield with 7 heavy boosters....8500 shield points) to a community goal and ship the other stuff there so it can do everything - cargo bays and a 5prismatic shield for the cargo runs, hatch breakers for piracy, and so on.
A good starter weapons build is full overcharged gimballed multicannons with a single feedback rail (G1 long range rolled 100 times for a big thermal buff is fine) and a dispersal Cannon, also gimballed. I ran this for a long time and even in its 760 ton cargo build it's a force. I finally just switched over to fixed longrange pulse lasers with wing rails but aiming the big gunboat can be a bit tricky.
Wow 720t of cargo. Nice.
May I ask, are you doing "classic" free trading, just buy low, sell high, or are you filling up on cargo missions? I used to make between 4 and 4.5k a Tonne on certain runs in my Type 7, however missions started to pay out better. Oddly, perhaps poor luck, the most cargo mission I saw were always at Outposts, so I needed the Python for those but could only ever take one 120-180 unit run of course. I'd have cleaned up if those missions had been at a larger station.

I finally got to Duke and now I'm not even sure if I want a Cutter
I’ll do bulk trading sometimes, and CG’s that pay well. However, mostly haulage missions. But with this much cargo, you can take haulage missions AND use eddb to find commodities on the market that can pad your income. I find mixing the two does work well. Another option is to keep the 2 class 8 slots for cargo and use some of the smaller slots for passengers and work both mission boards simultaneously as you get rep with an area. Until I headed out to the Pleiades recently I’ve been working on local factions near Alioth (based out of Ethgreze) tried to get allied with all the factions.

I'm not sure why you'd do that to yourself if you weren't sure... It's a beast of a ship. Much basking.
I have a cutter and an anaconda. My anaconda is mostly unused.
Cutter outshines the Anaconda with bigger engines, more cargo capacity and higher shields. It also has a higher mass lock factor.
The only downside to the Cutter is that it weighs significantly more (1000T adds a lot of drift), and the rebuy is higher.
If you have the money, I would say the cutter is significantly better than the anaconda.
