I flew like a total noob. So why am I happy?

Because I killed my first Elite NPC with mouse and keyboard.

Yes, this comes easy to the "gud" crowd, yes, the NPC was in a Cobra Mk IV.

But I'm just an average guy. I'm no ace pilot. :)

So killing this guy with a input device that is, in combat, alien to me... I'm really chuffed.

And hey... We all have to start somewhere. ;)

A guy....?

Congrats o7

Have always played K/B & Mouse, but am determined to somehow master FA-Off.

Unfortuantely, I'm not sure it's possible with K/B + mouse ... unless anyone can enlighten me ???

The trick to killing someone with a mouse and keyboard is to hit them hard enough with the keyboard to disorient them a bit. It can be tricky with a modern keyboard, unless you have something really beefy with mechanical switches. Once you've done that though, it's pretty simple.

You forgot to say what you have to do with the mouse, in order to finish them off.....

I find it hard to understand what the issue is with playing with a mouse and keyboard. But then I have played that way all the time, so I guess it is just what i am used to. Oddly when I helped a friend get started on Elite on his PC, showing him a few basic things, he had a joystick, and I really struggled to fly the ship using it. So much so he had to give me the mouse and keyboard to use instead of the joystick.

Most of my life I've been gaming on consoles. Indeed I was introduced to this game on Xbox.

I know consoles well. I am old enough to have suffered from Atari joystick hand cramp. Damn you Daley Thompson, I am sure I still have the stigmata.

The joystick on my old dragon 32 was also a belter, it had no springs to return it to the central point, you put it where it needed to be and it stayed in that position. It was a very acquired use thing, on Donkey Kong and Joust it was certainly awkward, and made Defender very very difficult.

I also remember a joystick coming out that had TWO fire buttons on it. One of which was a trigger. That was an amazing thing in its day.

A lot, if not the majority, of the best FA OFF pilots in this game play with KB+M. The trick is using "Relative mouse" in the control settings, and ofcourse lots, and lots of practice.

S'funny, years ago I started playing combat sims with a keyboard and mouse but I always preferred the "realism" of a joystick.
At the time, it was just starting to become apparent that a kb&m was superior to a joystick and for ages (possibly years) I felt like I was struggling to use a joystick effectively.

These days, I couldn't even begin to try and play a sim' with a kb&m again.
Weird how your brain manages to "re-wire" itself eventually.

I come from a simracing background and after using the keyboard for a while I saw the benefit of analogue controls & went through a couple of cheap joysticks to a FF joystick with homemade pedals. I raced online & did it well. Eventually I bought a good FF wheel & pedals, and it took me a long time to adapt but eventually I was even faster. I added an H-gate gearshifter and it didn't make me faster (it became possible to fluff gearchanges where the paddles were perfect every shift, but the H-gate could give faster shifts when you did it right).

Realism eventually trumped speed for me, and when I played Elite+, then Oolite & now ED, I use a joystick (HOTAS nowadays) because it feels to me like the right controller to use. If I played on a laptop in the living room I guess I'd use the Kb/M to save space, if I played on a console I'd probably use a gamepad (if no HOTAS was available) but I play on a desktop PC so I use a HOTAS because I can, and because I no longer feel the pressure to compete, I can just play my own way.

I have nothing against Kb/M users (or any other control method), but there's more than one way to define 'best' imo.

I'm 100% FA-off with KB+M controls.

If you want a hand check out my YT vid for KB+M setup and join our discord, linked in my sig etc. We are all about getting more people flying FA-off :)

Go on you know you want to!

Personally I like flying with mouse and keyboard, but then I don't have an HOTAS so I've never tried. I do have a mouse with tons of extra buttons and a DPI switch which is great for tracking targets with fixed beams.

Anyway good work CMDR

I've always been KBAM. I was going to buy a flight stick, but realized I was perfectly happy with KBAM, so never bothered.

I'm starting to think the same. Trust me, the temptation to just buy a HOTAS is there... But if I do I'll never master keyboard and mouse.

As it stands I just need to keep practicing.

*sigh*

I wish I could project this determination on my health. :/

Congratulations !! because flying with mouse and keyboard was a nightmare when i started ED two years ago... And so i quickly bought a X52 Hotas !!

I was never more than happy since then.

I really encourage you to buy one if you have the money.
