I got my backside shot off in an unproked attack by a Python CMDR

So there I was cruising around in my Viper (Lucky Lucy) having just made a few upgrades in armament and internal gear. I think to myself "I wonder if this thing is any good? I know Ill go shoot some pirates!". So I plot an FSD jump to the next door system to drop in next to a beacon quickly. I then toddle along to the beacon and drop in.

"WOAH NELLY! EVADE! EVADE!"

I had just dropped from supercruise less than 200m from an unknown ship dead ahead. It was large and filled the screen, so I roll off to the side and pull in a tight turn then hit the boost to get some range. I spin around and lock up the target and get a sensor sweep running. Its a human CMDR flying a 50 million cred ship, the Python.

Oh great, that means I might have some backup here!

So we fly around for 10 mins tagging targets, I shoot em a bit and he blows em up (le sigh) he shoots some a bit I blow em up (yay!). I'm actually having a bit of fun here, tagging these "Anarchy" AI. Then it goes a bit quiet, no more targets on scanners and I move off to find some at longer ranges. But nada for a good 10 mins. So fly back towards the beacon and I take a wee look at the sector menu....

"WARNING, UNDER ATTACK!"

"Wazzat? I'm getting shot at?". It takes
me a few seconds to realise its Mr Human Python Driver who decided to let loose on me.

"Oh crap. BOOST BOOST BOOST! Get me outa here Lucy!"

I pile on the speed and get outa range and take stock of the situation. Im ok on shields it seems, and at this range he cant fire. Plenty of power on tap, weapons have plenty of ammo........lets take a pass at him I think. I mean I might actually do some damage, because this ships not too bad. So I make a fast turn and drill him with some weapons fire in a head on pass. No appreciable damage.

I make a decision to turn quick, drop my thrust to the blue zone and hit my assist off button........

Only I dont. I instead accidently hit "Silent Running".

"OH, FRACK ME!"

What a total numpty. I had earlier in the day rebound my keybinds and hit the "old" bind, without thinking. So now I am in a "critical" state. I take my years of experience of gaming experience in to account and make a good solid tactical decision.

"RUN AWAY! RUN AWAY
!"

I hit the boost again and try and get more range, I jink I roll and I generally make myself a hard target to hit. Then I remember, I have chaff now. I hit it and............wait he is missing me! Oh sweet joy of joys its making him fire wildly. My shields come back up again, and I remember that I also have shield packs. So I hit it and bam, full shields. Right so this ship, now at 91% hull and full shields has taken a bit of fire here and stood up well to my clutz moves. I decide this time I will definitely make a proper attacking pass using the CORRECT button for assist off. I get some fire off, letting rip with everything I have in another head on pass. He doesn't change course, I don't change course.........and "bam" we hit. My shields now totally vanish and then I see his are still up. As I am now trying to recover from the impact, he thrusters in to me and "bam" we hit again. Only this time I take HUGE hull damage.

I am at 17% hull, no shields, in an Anarchy system, with a 50m cred ship and a human with a bad attitude at the helm glued to my backside.

"RUN AWAY! RUN AWAY
!"

Only this time I REALLY mean it and pop in my hard points and hit the FSD. "Come on lucy dont fail me now!". I jink, I roll, I jink some more and hit the chaff until I run out. She's still charging the FSD and this big bloody Python is mass locking me too. I need to do something! Ah wait a sec, the old "BSG slide". I hit assist off, throw the throttle in to full reverse and get my nose on to the target. Backing off I hit assist on again and then...........realise I cannot deploy hardpoints while charging the FSD.

"Er, what do I do now?"
Strafe of course! So I strafe up, left, down, right, left again, down this time, now left again, now right.....basically I am trying to be unpredictable. "Thruster offline", AH LUCY WHY YOU NO LIKE ME? Ermagud imma goner.

Then Lucy says the sweetest thing, "Shields Online". I could kiss ya girl if ya were real. So I hit my last shield pack, throttled up and boosted past the python at full chat! Then Lucy gives me even more good news.

"Ready to engage", she says in the those syrupy overtones.
"Oh I am baby, I am. Lets get the hell outa here!"

"WHEW I made it!"

Almost. Now I have to get to a station. Luckily my ham fisted jump attempt had pushed me up to an empty system. Frack the super cruise, next star over and JUMP! Theres a station, land it right now!

And I survived!

Hefty repair bill. But covered by my bounty payout.......just.

And the moral of the story?

There isn't one. I had FUN, it was INTENSE, I sweated BULLETS, my heart was HAMMERING.

So he attacked me without warning or provocation. Big deal.

Its

a

game.

Enjoy it.

Good tale. I was wondering how my viper would fare against some of the bigger CMDR ships, I'll be more inclined to give it a go next opportunity.

Great story!

And almost 100% true. Some slight iffyness as it was late last night, and I cant be 100% accurate in the re-telling. But if YOU were that python driver, feel free to speak up. I ain't ashamed, you should not be either. "I ain't even mad bro".

Fun read. Just a tip though, never ever, ever, ever and well ever, make a head on pass. This is a cardinal rule of flight sims, including space sims and adopted from real life fighter pilot tactics. If you are up against superior firepower and armor, always attack from a favorable position, if you don't have one, don't engage.

FW190 pilots used to pull this all the time in WWII, a radial engine with armored glass and superior firepower centered in the nose of the aircraft meant death to anyone in a head on pass. The Python and Asp have excellent firepower and weapon placement, these are the Focke wulf's of Elite, avoid the head on at all cost.

Oh yeah I know. I just didnt have much choices open to me. It was a calculated risk to have as low a profile as I could while firing and trying to get on his tail in the quickests fashion. Any other time I would try and side slip and manoeuvre around him for a good shot but it was panic stations at times. Not exactly my finest hour.

lol, I know the feeling. There's been a few times I thought I might break my x-52 pro because my hands were sweating so bad.

Good read :)
but you got lucky , i have got my python up to B & C modules and i got interdicted by a expert IMP clipper yesterday
he didn't survive the first pass , he exploded right beside me as my guns were reloading :)

1 C3 beam and 4 C2 multi's

the only thing that has got my shield down so far was a ELITE anaconda , and that was only because my joystick dropped its programing , and i still killed it

Oh yeah, I know. I made so many mistakes and was so sloppy that fight I really should have died. I think the other guy got a bit confused too. He could have taken out my FSD a few times, as my shields were down for a while. And I definately know he hit thermal overload too because as I was going backwards I saw his weapons only firing sporadically.

This is what makes it a real gaming experience and not just another AI bash-fest.

Story lacks "griefer", "scumbag", "psycotic"...

Glad to disappoint :p

The "thruster offline" thing. I experienced something similar when I was learning to bounty hunt on my 2nd day of playing. Here I am in my stock Freagle trying to score wanted targets and I managed to tag a system authority vessel due to stray fire instead. I think it was an expert Viper or something. During my escape, as the FSD is doing countdown (between 3 and 2), I lost thrusters. I still managed to jump (somehow), but everything was fine during supercruse and thrusters work again after I dropped off supercruise at the nearest outpost.

Is the thruster repair during supercruise intentional? Later on I learned about CMDRs being left for dead with no thrusters having to self destruct since it can not be repaired... If we lose thrusters at a fast enough speed that we can still manage to jump to supercruise, does it got repaired magically? I don't really want to test this, but maybe there's something obvious I am missing

"Thruster offline" means that you've sustained damage on that module and one of the thrusters has malfunctioned. It will kick back in after a few moments, but until then you're going to have a really hard time flying the ship. It doesn't mean that the module is destroyed (at 0%), yet.

great story - enjoyed reading that !

I've got a python, maybe I should just start shooting random human players so they can have the same experience ?? (just joking!)

When its offline its just offline for a time before it can reboot and start working again. If its destroyed, your ship is pretty much dead in the water.

Please do.........on Empire aligned players. We need to get a proper war started up between the factions. Might as well start here :D
