What you do need to do though is accept it because I can guarantee you that you are not going to change anybody's mind or cause them to pause for even a second's thought by posting on here about it.

Well, you can always wait until they're sitting in front of empty stations, whining about the decline of the game and "meaningful PvP" and then point at exactly this thread.
Sounds kinda fun. :D

To the OP: I slammed my Python into a medium-high G planet yesterday. 100% shield and Hull to 0 in less than a second. 4 million rebuy. Damn planets and their gravity. :D

Was about to be my advice exactly.....well...minus the Python skydiving lessons....

What the OP experienced is exactly the reason I no longer bother with community goals and the reason I have now not played the game in a while.....I am holding out hope that when crime and punishment comes that it will be effective in curbing this kind of thing.

Also @ Primvata.....I must disagree I'm sorry....but if what they were doing was not considered griefing then what the hell is? I mean, I consider someone killing you repeatedly as you leave a station specifically targeting you to be a very reminiscent of the term.

I dont kill randoms I actualy fly around looking for CMDRs in need of help.
I think its safe to say the guy who killed the OP was being rude and a bit nasty but he was not breaking any of the rules in the game.

The devs have called elite dangerous a life sim many , many times.
Of course they guy was rude and nasty to you but he did not break what he did is fair game in elite.
I would like to escort players who cant defend themselves around but its hard to get there in time and so on.

My guess is he was trying to prevent the CG from being won , there is a high chance he just does not want what ever is going on to happen to the galaxy or he just likes explosions.
What CG was is? maybe you could try to get some CMDRs to defend the space around that station.

As to what is open : its what the players make of it , its the closest we get to the living breathing galaxy we were told about in alpha.
Were every trade run is a danger but also a potential reward as you might meet someone who can help... like EVE but with gameplay :p

It was the meta alloy thing at Maia.
I agree with your assessment that it was people who like pixel explosions.
However the notion of stopping the main story arc of the game or really any CG by blowing up the few people who fly there in open is a fallacy. The CG in question already had a level of success with about 80k tonnes shipped (it is standing at 118k) so my contribution of 9 (could be 19 though since I was not really paying attention, just collected it for an hour or so on two afternoons) would have been miniscule at most.
Ooo that brings another thought. How boring it must have been to collect thousands and thousands of alloys two at a time ...
With regards to a living and breathing galaxy: I used to be happy to see the empty rectangle when exploring the galactic core or even just stopping by Betelgeuse. However, from what I have seen in the game and read on the forums in the human inhabited space it is not such a happy sight. While the fight or flight reflex is one of the most important phenomena of the animal kingdom, it is not the foundation of human social interactions nor should it be the norm of any game.

I think it's interesting that not one person has mentioned the real Griefers here.

It's those heartless Commanders who are each and every Barnacle they find and then forcing them to respawn by exploit. Over and over again. Like some relentless Groundhog Day horror story. And for what? To solve a technological plague that was a direct result of our meddling with the UA. Who it should be said are harmless when left in their natural environment. Let's not forget the real victims here.

These Interstellar Types are harsh to be fair but let's consider the Alien we have worked so hard to discover.

I for one think the community should be ashamed of their pillaging of this Alien species and think we should demand reparations from the Canon on behalf of Barnacle kind. I also think the Powers should involve themselves more in our galaxy and together form some kind of Barnacle Protection League. They can have the name for free.

Yay Interstellar Baster*s! give them Alien rapists one in the eye for me!

(I'm much too far away to do it myself!)

Thank you for your time.

Okay, so I am trying to understand what fun is because apparently I have some whacky notions about this.
Shooting/ ramming the same unshielded hauler leaving a station a dozen times with a wing of federal assault ships and such is fun.

Based on in-game behavior and forum posts, some people find this "fun". These are the people you share Open with, if you choose to play there.

Oh and another thing I just realised: playing open is for the people who enjoy fighting so everyone else should play solo.
Do these two statements coincide with the goals of the game?

Goals of the game? Have to ask Frontier. Many people playing in Open are just looking for an easy kill. If you don't want to put up with that, Solo is available as is the thing that griefers most fear. That which makes their souls shriek in anguish. It's what wakes them up at night in a cold sweat. It's the thing they tell their little griefer kids will come get them if they're good. What is this wonderful thing, you ask?

M...MM....MMM...MOBIUS.:D

Whenever a griefer is bothering you, just say "Mobius." It's like holding up a cross to a vampire. Really: try it and watch. Say it like you would say "Boo." Whatever they say, just keep replying "Mobius."

"You Carebears hiding in Solo are ruining our powerplay."

"Mobius."

"You're to scared of my manly mad PvP skilz to play in Open."

"Mobius."

"If Frontier doesn't make ED Open only, I'm gonna quit and play Star Citizen."

"Mobius."

"I'm just a lovable pirate, please play with me."

"Mobius."

"WAHHWAHH!!" (posted on Reddit)

You are a liar.
Noone s barnacles. You can not target barnacles or interact with them in any way.
Blowing up ships at a station will not stop people from collecting meta alloys as they are not in the same system. This is especially true for ships launching from the station as opposed to the ones landing there. Usually you carry your cargo to the place where it is in demand, not away from it.
If you have a problem with a game mechanic take it up with the game designers, not with players.
Groundhog Day is a comedy.
You are a bad troll.
