I have a ping of 119ms, download speed of 0.47Mbps and an upload of 0.36. My thoughts on Elite

So like many when I found out Elite Dangerous was not going to contain an offline mode I was a little annoyed. I never debating trying to get a refund as I hoped on day my internet situation would improve.

Well on the 16th I took my pc round to a friends house closer to civilization and Downloaded the game just to try it out see how my rig handled it. I loved it thought it was great which just made more all the more sad that it probably wouldn’t be possible for me to play at home.

However to my surprise the game is playable on my connection. I mainly play as a trader so I cant comment on PVP it might struggle there but I have been enjoying the game glitch free over the Christmas period. Currently my assets are worth around the 3,000,000.

I just wanted to share my experience with community especially those who like me where a little annoyed at the lack of an offline mode.

I don't know what my upload/download speeds are but I've been using a dongle modem from the start, the connection can be very flaky, dropping out and in frequently, however apart from the odd crash back in beta I've had few problems with it. It does struggle in open if there are a few other players around but not unplayable.

You can press ctrl+b in game to show the bandwidth being used in game. If you are in solo (or open with no other players around) its usually 0 - 50 bits per second.

Should be playable on most connections.

When you buy things in the shop it might take a bit longer, that really should be all.

Goes up to like 2000/sec when voice comms is active. Which doesn't stress even the sluggiest connection out there.

I do really like how little bandwidth this game uses now. It was a real pig earlier in beta, but optimisations have helped a lot. Kudos to FD for remembering about us rural gamers.

stating your ping and up and download speed without also telling from what target server is rather ... pointless. i'm fairly certain that those numbers are not from the server on which elite runs. i'm not sure how you come up with an upload speed towards the elite server.

that said, the elite game uses almost no bandwith and is probably playable on an analogue (those those things even exist anymore ?) modem.

i think a lot of games are made to still run on 56kb modems, even games with quite a lot of players moving around near you like wow for example in a 25 man group your still only transferring single digit KB's when most lines these days are at least able to handle what the OP gets, my up and down are the same because i live by the welsh coast miles from a large city. i too get about 500-600kb down and 75kb up i can't stream at all unless i have an hour delay, i get my internet from my old pc because i have no room for the network card so on top of having 3rd world internet, i have a wireless connection routed through my old pc via an ethernet cable, still i haven't dropped from the game either, actually have a stable connection on every game i play, except eve apparently which likes to kick you randomly after a couple of packet losses.

Its just the numbers I got off speedtest.net so they are not related to elites servers. Before I tried playing elite online I was looking for a thread that might shed light if the game would run on a slow connection I didn’t come up with much at the time so thought I would write a post for others looking for similar information that was the point.

I've played it (Solo mode) on a hotel wifi connection (256k) and been running Teamspeak at the same time. Playing private group on this connection did cause problems though when trying to get into the same instance as friends.

David Braben says he can play solo using a smartphone tether (3G?) on a train - so it's certainly playable in solo mode with a low-ish speed connection.

I have been playing in open play and its been fine with skype aswell

I was last playing on a low-speed connection last July/August (during Beta) - so I'm guessing the networking is far better optimized now.
I will get a chance to test it again next week - working away again, and will have the same hotel wifi as before . . .

While I diagnosed my connection issue over the holidays, the amount of data Elite sends is less than many websites generate with auto-refresh.

Very very lean. You don't even talk to the servers while in supercruise, unless something happens.

During Beta, I switched off my router and connected my mobile up via USB tether to test the game and how much bandwidth it would use should the ginger bearded ones internet service stop working (Virgin Media is prone to 'no can work syndrome) I was pleasantly surprised how little data the game used. It's perfectly playable over 3G.

That does seem like a very poor net connection but its good you can still play the game :)
