I have a very powerful new computer. Why can't I get it to run Odyssey in VR at satisfactory quality and speed?

And now it's broken again, and I'm softlocked at 60fps, and I don't why. I've been controlling it for the last 3 days, but today it doesn't work anymore. I'm stunned, but this is just Elite: Dangerous in a nutshell.

I'm not sure you can use any of my advice. Sorry.

I have no sensible advice I can offer, but there must be something fundamentally wrong with some component in your VR render pipeline. The only thing that comes to mind is the frame rate limit in ED's settings, but that should only affect the mirror window, not VR. Did you accidently set your G2's refresh rate to 60 Hz? Although, you would notice. It flickers horribly.

And for the record, I have never had the problem of foreground windows or ED's window focus eating up performance. It makes zero difference on my system. If I were in your shoes, I would probably try to purge WMR, SteamVR and Mixed Reality for SteamVR from my system and start over.

As said above, the one thing you could check is the refresh rate in the WMR settings. You can set it to 90 Hz or 60 Hz, but that flickers horrible - you would know. Also make sure you have set everything in WMR to best visual quality and don't let it adjust anything for performance (sorry, I don't remember how it is called in the WMR settings, my PC is off).

Other than that: Sorry. This really sucks.

Cheers mate.
Something really fishy is going on. From one day to next, performance is borked. I even tried dialing down resolution in SteamVR as you recommended. 80%/80%. Didn't make any difference at all.

Funny thing is if I put any kind of static screen/window in front of Elite: Dangerous on my 2D monitor, performance immediately jumps back to 90 fps in my Reverb, but then I can't use my controls anymore. Only the headset. No words...

WMR is 90hz. Yeah I've checked WMR for that performance stuff.
I guess I could try deleting and reinstalling every program related to VR, if that is what you mean. Maybe another day. I've lost my puff...

I booted up my VR rig to check - how do you check your framerate? Something like Afterburner, or fpsVR? I have noticed that fpsVR and the Afterburner overlay in the mirror window always show the "real" framerate, but the Afterburner tray icon shows 60 fps when I focus away from ED - it shows 90 when ED is focused.

I guess my question is: Are you sure you really only get 60 fps nad it isn't just a display error? Does switching motion smoothing in the SteamVR settings change anything regarding your 60 fps lock?

Cheers. I use fpsVR.
It's very easy to see when the reprojection and gpu frametime goes ape, and frames drop from 90 to 50/60. The game becomes jittery.
I have no clue...
Yesterday everything was rosy, today it isn't.

Hah. Thanks everyone. My HP Reverb G2 headset has failed dismally. The image is massively distorted, and the panels show different parts of the scene. The visual has reduced the field of view by putting what looks like black curtains around the edges. Nothing to do with ED. I am in discussions with HP; there is a tale of woe, to decide what happens next.

Damn. Sorry to hear that. Mine has worked without issues. I hope it gets sorted quickly.

Is there any way the computer itself can damage the headset?
The only critical thing I can think of is the cable. Be sure that it's mounted securely in PC and headset, and make sure that it doesn't get too twisted or bent for that matter. A lot of stuff going through there.

I have a Ryzen 5600X and a NVidia RTX 3080 with a Reverb G2. To play ED in VR, first I set my headset at 60Hz. And I now run through Open XR with the below settings. It runs fine. There are some stations and surface stations where I go below 60 FPS but it's ok for me as I don't spend my time there. It runs at 60FPS in asteroid belts. I only play VR for the ship gameplay. As soon as I decide to play on foot (which is not often) I go back on screen.

Don't you find that really flickery and offputting in the headset? I had to enable that when I ran the G2 off my 980Ti (which didn't support the later HDMI version for 90Hz). It was awful, and prompted an immediate GPU upgrade. A 3080 should be able to drive the headset at 90Hz fine (you can still run with lower FPS/reprojection if needed).

I can't bare reprojection so I disable it. I don't really notice fickering in that game. I also do simracing, I find it much more noticeable in simracing where I run the G2 at 90Hz because in that case 60Hz is really not good.
I tried at 90Hz in Odyssey, it runs ok but reprojection kicks in too frequently. In Horizons, it runs at a steady 90Hz everywhere with high settings.
