Recently appointed moderators have tended to be long standing forum members - Edward Lewis is the Community Manager - you could PM him if you're really interested.

I'm not sure as never been a mod (and have no desire to). However, I'd imagine it's usually by invitation, and to people who spend a fair amount of time on the forum.

The ability to retain a civil tongue at all times is probably a bonus too, along with managing not to have some sort of meltdown every time you read an opinion that differs to yours. Sounds simple but those are rare qualities on this forum

The only advice I can give is participate in the forum, be friendly to everyone (even to trolls), be helpful and informative, write guides for newcomers, participate, be noticed. That's all you can really do and nothing is guaranteed. It's a right-place, right-time kind of scenario and typically by invitation only.

One golden rule to remember is never create a post asking how to become a mod. These rule you out straight away.

Trust me - Don't do it. Turn around & walk away quickly. Go hide under your bed. Forget you ever had the idea. Got that? Good.
I was a long time mod on other forums until I quit a couple of years back. The upside is that nothing anyone says or does can surprise or hurt me any more. I am invulnerable, or to put it another way, I am completely numb.
Downside is my sanity may take years to return, my hair never will, & my face is often said to be one that's looked into Hell. (And seen prettier things peering back out)
