Honestly, with the ability to choose high-rep rewards much more easily in the revised mission rewards system is ranking up still that hard? It seems to me if you are just doing missions and you focus on those rewards that it is much easier now? I remember grinding rank for my Cutter back before I could pick those high rep missions and I did an awful lot of donation missions to get there.

That's true. When the mission reward choice came in it quickly pushed me over the rank for a cutter.

The method is quite easy.

Simply play the game normally for 3 years, with a total play time of 13 weeks, 23 hours and 2 minutes and hey presto! You will, as a side effect of regular gameplay, reach rear admiral without having to grind.

Three hours. No grind and I saved about 5000 refugees, victims of the Thargoid menace, in the process.

I had to deftly fly my Luxury Beluga that I converted to a refugee barge. Popping heatsinks and recovering from massive explosions that sent my giant ship careening off course into jagged debris fields. It took a lot of focus for me to make the round trip with no damage or loss of life.

Ther are quick to slow methods available to gain rank. Don't have to search real hard to find them.

I actively pursued Fed rank few years ago and got the Corvette. Didn't push for Imp rank until the last few levels and got the Cutter.

Go your own way.

I'm actually curious why it took you so long. After playing the game normally for 6 months I was only 2 ranks away and went to Sothis/Ceos to grind out the last 2 ranks, which only took a couple hours.

Having got my corvette, and cutter, in practice I prefer and fly smaller ships much more often. I think the medium ships are the most fun - FGS, FDL, AspX and Krait 2 are the best ships. In my opinion...
