I wanted them for myself for quite some years, in fact: when i first bought Elite years ago i tried for one hour to find the button to leave the Seat. The Trailer tricked me quite a bit.
This bringing me to my concerns: I fear that spacelegs will be restricted to a bare minimum. I really hope im wrong here but letting us run around on barren planet surfaces just to be able to say "we have Space Legs" won't do it for me. I would like to walk around my Cutter, have a chat with Multicrew CMDRs in my Cutters Crewquarters or just rest at my Captainsquarters after i fought a War for a Faction that pays me 500k for risking my life.
Im absolutely sure that we wont ever be able to walk around our Carriers since those things are basicly a Flying City and its pretty much safe to say that Frontier isn't capable of delivering on that part.
For my Part: i dont need Space Legs for Barren Planets, we have a SRV for that. Id like to have them for Ships and Stations, Public Hubs or Clubs. The only Worlds interesting to Explore on Legs would be Earthlikes, Ammoniaworlds, something like that.
What do you think about this upcoming Feature? Do you have Expectations or even set requirements before you buy it? I know some already wont open their pocket because there is no VR.
Have a good Day.
That is just the thing... many people that want/are exited about space legs, have their own vision of what they want it to be... me included, then one time when we talked about it and we started to think about how would it really work....
Lets start with our ships, walking around, be able to tinker with stuff, etc, etc. and the I remembered when we played some Guns of Icarus Online, and what made us stop playing that, all the repeated "tinkering" we had todo to keep the air ship going, while fighting NPC air ships.. so that was a multiplayer game. where a team of players had to work together. Now, we all realised, how this would NOT work in Elite... firstly, most fly their ship alone, sure there some multicrew going on, but lets face it, most of us fly alone in our ships... so would we be prepared to leave our seat and go over to the gunner position to shoot?Who would fly the ship then? and we can go on with these things, and realise, that this is not doable in combat...
Add to this, that combat can be over quite fast... so of leave the pilot chair for 30-60 seconds, then you could very well have been killed during that time in combat! (I am ignoring Shield stacking Cutters etc.... now)
So if we rule out combat, then what would we do? We could think that we could stop and repair our ship, like for example, expplores could repair their powerplant by power it all down... and simply use their space suite, some "batteries" and extra oxygen tanks.... So that could be cool, but every such scenario, comes to a crashing realization, doing this in open could be very bad, as the time to kill a powered down shown is significantly reduced, so for most players this would be nothing more than a cool feature we try and then forgets about.
So lets leave our ships and we dock at a space station... should we know need to leave the pilots chair, walk to the airlock, exit tthe ship, walk across the landing pad, take some shuttle/elevator service to reach the inner of the station, go and talk to every person, talk A to hand in bounties, walk over to B and have the ship repaired, wlak to C and restock on Limpets, walk over to D to check for missions, walk over to E and check for more missions etc, etc
Immersive yes, but at what cost? people are already complaining about time wasted on longer super cruise distances....so adding 5-10 minutes "running" around between NPC's to do what we today can do in under 1 minute from the pilot seat! So if this is an optional choice, it would be just that, cool feature to try a few times, and then go back to the old ways of doing everything from the cockpit. And if they the remove how we can do it today,
So when we start to think what would the use for space legs be on our ship, other than it would be a cool feature, walking around, looking out the various windows etc, what would we actually do with it? I doubt many players would just hang around in i lounge area... I know many players have wished for the option to be moved to some obvesvatin deck to watch the Fleet Carrier jump, but after the first few jumps how many would actually keep doing that?
So that brings us to what they hinted at in the Odyssey trailer... new landable planets with new stuff todo... I have no illusions that this "new" stuff would be much more engaging that we got with Horizon and driving around our SRV, but it would be different...
My friends thinks I am crazy here, but I have a sneaky suspicion that we would actually get space legs in the "new era" update, allowing us to explore our ships and some limited exploration inside stations. So basically, giving everyone the basic foundation for space legs, with no content to use with it, other than it is space legs and that is cool, for like 10 minutes... And then the actual space legs content, is delivered in packages like Odyssey...
Anyway, I am a space legs dreamer, and can go on and on about all the cool things we could do, and then I start to think about it in more practical terms, and realises that this will not happen without ALOT of redesign of some quite fundamental game play options! and we know how people react to changes to things that have been like that since the game came out. So changing existing gamelay mechanics can be quite upsetting to alot of players, would it really be cool the 50:th time to spend 5-10 minutes "moving" to handing missions?
