I like turtles

After the addition of the Archelon in JWE2 it made me further want my HUGE itch of sea turtles in PZ to be scratched immediately. It then made me thing about all the other turtles that could be in PZ but aren’t. Such as African Spurred Tortoises for the desert biome, Alligator Snapping Turtles, Radiated Tortoise, giant soft shells, fly river turtles, more freshwater pond species, and of course my most wanted group: Sea Turtles! So I decided to make a dedicated turtle thread for all our turtle wants and needs. The turtle injustice in PZ needs to end once and for all!

I would definitley prefer some freshwater turtles. They'd be absolutely amazing for reptile and tropical houses. The ones I think would work best are the pig nosed turtle, black softshell turtle or arrau River turtle. Pictured in order below:

Hard pass on sea turtles, no way to add them realistically. I'd love more freshwater exhibit turtles, though, and definitely more tortoises. I very much want the leopard tortoise.

I'm on the fence about the alligator snapping turtle; on the one hand, making a mixed alligator/snapping turtle habitat would be a lot of fun, but then on the other hand the in-game crocodiles already are way too active and this would look even more stupid with a snapping turtle which realistically shouldn't do much of anything most of the time.

Pretty much this.
I would really like sea turtles, but only if they come with proper aquariums and other marine animals like sharks, rays and stuff. As a stand alone animal they would look really out of place in PZ imo.

With snappers i agree that they would be way to active as habitat animals. However the sprawling legs of reptiles seems to make their traversable area really bad in PZ, so i guess it would be similar with snapping turtles. So i wouldnt mind them in habitats if i can just pin them in place with 2 rocks :D. But i would be just fine with exhibit alligator snappers.

Otherwise i really want a smaller type of tortoise for some variety among our habitat reptiles. A nice bonus is that alot of those medium sized tortoises would give a nice filler animal to a place that could really use one: Redfooted tortoise-South america, Radiated tortoise-Madagascar, Marginated tortoise-Mediterranean (this one might be a little to small tho)
A aquatic habitat turtle like the pig nose or arrau river would be neat but isnt anything i really need tbh

Agreed, in the span of 2 months I went to my local zoo 3 times, and I swear to god the snapping turtle was lodged into the part of the beaver dam (beavers were in the enclosure before they passed away :( anyway every single time I went he was in that exact spot, i was gonna question if he was alive or not 🤣 But he was fine and he started moving again the next time I went.

There's also the point that in captivity they really aren't "semi-aquatic" because it's next to impossible to breed them, so they are typically kept in regular aquarium tanks.

Also, I don't know about everywhere in the world, but a lot of marine facilities only take them in as rescues before releasing them back to the wild. A lot of the sea turtles people see in zoos are either rescues that couldn't be released, or are in recovery to be released.

I think it would be cool to acknowledge that in game though and have them be rescue animals. If there’s no full aquariums added, then just having them go on land when they’re placed in would be fine since they don’t have to breed as rescue animals. (To be clear I wouldn’t mind them breeding either I just want them in the game tbh 🤷🏻)

I think it's unlikely we'll ever see them in PZ. They can get away with it in JWE2 because A) the archelon is extinct and canonically brought back to life by combining its DNA with that of other animals, so its natural behaviours, patterns, and needs don't matter as much, and B) the entire premise of that game is pure fantasy anyway.

Despite it's (relative) simplicity, PZ is geared towards realism (yes, obviously I am aware of the fact that a vet cannot carry an elephant in a box in real life) and conservation (yes, I am also aware that farming animals for CC in franchise mode is the antithesis of this, not that I do it). I don't think including sea turtles is necessarily a mark against either if done right, but it falls into the region of 'questionable' which Frontier seems to avoid. I mean, we're never going to see dolphins in the game if only because every discussion around that turns into a shouting match.

Don't get me wrong, I do love sea turtles, and I do love seeing them in aquariums (never seen any in 'proper' zoos before, but whatever), I just don't think they have a place in Planet Zoo really.

I understand where you’re coming from and I admire PZ’s dedication to realism, however I think in some ways this has taken a bit away from the “fun factor” of the game. As is the game is basically a glorified model building game with slight game elements it would be fun to include things like rescue animals and more challenges and gameplay mechanics and while yea the addition of sea turtles won’t really effect this and I’m speaking of a greater issue than just adding sea turtles I just think the philosophy of pure realism is taking a little away from the fun factor. Rescue animals and the like are a vital part of real life zoos and a mechanic/ species that represent that would be really cool IMO

I do like the idea of implementing rescue animals in PZ, could be also a less contoversial way of getting cetaceans. Not sure which form rescue animals could take exactly, maybe as a special offering every now and again that need some special things before being able to be placed. Or having high vet and medicine cost in change for other benefits.

I like sea turtles but don't really need them in PZ, except if we get an aquarium expansion. Having only sea turtles and no other aquarium animals would not make sense IMO. I would like to get some turtle species though.

The only time I remember seeing an Alligator Snapping Turtle, it was extremely active. Did I just get lucky? :ROFLMAO:
The first time I saw one I thought it was a decoration/statue inside the habitat. Second time I saw another and it moved its head 😂 After spending some time in rural florida for wildlife spotting, any suspicious looking piece of wood like object is immediately treated as either one of these turtles or their friendly neighbours, the Alligator. Still have yet to seen an active turtle that isn't a sea turtle.
