I Love Elite but...

Hi there,

I post my message here because I don't really know where to post it.
Thank you Rootsrat

I am an occasional player of Elite Dangerous Odyssey, I discovered the franchise in 2018 with Horizon.

Far be it from me to make a comparison with Star Citizen, and I suspect that this subject must have been addressed many times, but I really find it a shame not to have a "Global chat" between commanders, like on Star Citizen.

From my little experience on Elite, I find it really unfortunate that despite the fact that we are in an open world, we come across so few pilots and have so little interactivity.

I love the lore of Elite, I really like this game. But I can't play it alone because I have this lack of talking with other players.

If you play alone like me, the game seems empty and you really feel like you're alone in the world when you're not!

I hope that one day we will have this kind of chat, I also know that many are against this idea but I still allow myself to formulate it.

What do you think?

Thank you all for taking the time to read me

The Witness
(sorry for my bad english, i use a translator)

Have you considered joining a player group? Are you on Inara? (Inara is a must-have website for Elite players with invaluable information about the game galaxy). You will find nearly all the in-game squadrons on Inara plus many other player factions, with links to their Discord pages so you will be able to join, and interact in the actual game. We are all doing stuff together like background simulation (taking over or working to improve star systems), wing trading missions (50 million credits per mission - for each person!), exploration, expeditions using the ED star map...

Join a player group - if it doesn't fit your play style, join another one! Some are designed for new players, or those trying a new part of the game, and full of helpful people. Absolutely no excuse for anyone to be lonely in this game.

System chat is bad enough, a global chat would be insufferable,
and I am a more socialising player.

Better find a group of like-minded CMDRs, and skip the rest. Believe me, system chat nearly made me vomit sometimes.
Global? Noooooooo.

This. It can be ok at times, but in a busy system it can just become a mess. You can then miss loads of important messages you need to see or chat from friends. Yes, you can put it on a separate tab... and then you never look at it anyway.

Global chat though, ugh. Its the bane of every MMO out there. Pure spam and you don't need to see any of it anyway. Plus with global chat you'd get so many messages flying past you'd never read any of it anyway. There'd simply be no time.

This is why Discord exists. Chat with your fellow players in whatever groups you like.

Indeed. But same with busy Discords, i end up just muting therm because its too much chatter. I turn off notifications because i can't stand the constant beeping, then i simply start forgetting to look at those discords at all.

So yeah, small discords are ok as is system chat in not so busy systems, but more than that, ugh.

Well you see, I did not know this website at all! I knew that we could create organizations or groups of players but I didn't know where.
Thanks for the tip !

Going back to the global chat, I understand everyone's reasoning, in relation to the toxic behavior of other players, but this is also the case on Star Citizen and yet, we all try as much as possible to help each other through general chat.
Admittedly, there are haters, as in any game I suppose, but it still remains with small proportions.

Where then, make a chat system equivalent to Warframe, i.e. with several tabs depending on what we need (help/support - trading etc...)

In fact, I was mainly saying that because with all the efforts the devs are making to make the game as immersive as possible, I find it a shame that there isn't an in-game chat system, rather than going through a source external like Discord, forums etc... where to get lucky and come across other pilots in the same system as you

That's the thing though, you don't need to be lucky. Join a group, use their discord, and coordinate.

Finding people via a global chat... well, again, if you've really experienced a global chat on any sort of popular game you should know its like throwing a penny into a fountain.

Global chat in Star Citizen can work because there's only 50 people (or perhaps 100 recently) on a server. Its not really global chat as in chat across all servers. In ED, go to a busy system, like Robigo or Shinrarta, and there are probably hundreds of people in that system across modes/platforms.

But multiply it up by how many people are online at any given time (Steam stats alone shows thousands) and now you're talking about thousands of people all with access to global chat at the same time.

Besides the mess the chat would be (especially caused by those who love to spam global chats when they are truly global.... "FC with Tritium for sale 10,000 CREDITS PER TON ** FLUBADUB SYSTEM * MEGA SALE!!!! COME AND GET IT!!!" or "Get credits for ED on XYZ.COM! We are rated 99% TRUSTWORTHY on TRUSTPILOT!!!") there is also the technical overhead. Every second multiple messages being sent to thousands of players... its going to add up.

I play alone. That's why I like it. It suits my character in game. As I have said many times here before, imagination is key. My journey is as a loner hired gun. Just my ships voice packs and me. I'll send the odd o7 to CMDR's passing in my instance, but solo (no pun intended) suits me just fine.

I've never played Star Citizen, but what Agony_Aunt says sounds very plausible. A global chat system might not be as desirable as you think. Star Citizen is very friendly, helpful and accessible at the moment because it's mostly enthusiasts that are playing right now

And there is an in-game chat system which would limit your conversations to a medium-sized group of like-minded people

...join a squadron

The squadron management option is in the right hand panel of your cockpit. And when you want to chat to all the members of your squadron you go to the coms panel at the top of your cockpit and press "TAB" until your text turns green. It may take a couple of attempts to find a squadron which uses the in-game coms, but I'm sure there'll be a few out there

Indeed, I had not made the comparison in this way.
I thought Elite worked almost the same as Star Citizen at the server level and I didn't know it was just one server with all the players together

In any case, thank you all for your feedback, it's good to have several different opinions, I'm learning a lot :)

Ah, i understand your confusion now.

Yeah, and in some ways, ED's system chat is more akin to SC's global chat, although SC's global chat has even shorter reach. With only 1 system in Star Citizen global chat is effectively a limited system chat.

I fully support a broader selection of (opt-in) chat channels but the chat UI we currently have is absolutely not up to the challenge. We need a more robust chat interface that offers a better UX first, but I think just about everyone would appreciate that.

One could say that the in game chat kills me...

System chat is bad enough, a global chat would be insufferable,
and I am a more socialising player.

I remember one particular LOTRO server, every few days a large clan of "Christian" folk would hold an evangelical meetings over global chat, ignoring everyone telling them to go away in many, well less than pleasant terms because all you would see was large screeds of text scrolling down endlessly and it was impossible to use for anything else. Then the endless posts by gold spammers, they were fun as well, basically global chat was abandoned by all other players because it was a waste of time. I think the LOTRO devs finally managed to get the gold spammers under control, and the server where the evangelicals held meeting was shut down, although I don't think that was related, and they haven't popped up on my current server, but I basically I ignore all chat now anyway.

More ingame tools to socialize would be neat. Starting with an official PvE mode would be the real first step, in my view. Global chats tend not to go well, however, and for whatever reason games today still haven't figured out how to implement basic spam and chat protection algorithms.

I'd be happy with "global chat" in ED too, as I am in SC.

As a working father, I'm not a daily gamer. Sometimes just play 1 night/week for 2 hours, sometimes I'm away for weeks.
When I suddenly decide to play ED, I just want to have great fun... but NOT ALONE. I'd like to be in a GALAXY, where other pilots are working on their own missions, goals, and communicate with them right there.

That is working in SC - just because they have "global chat".
In every minute you can have company for a "mission",, or "goal"..or just for lazy mining.
Surprisingly good conversations, friends in a session, in good mood.

And yes, I have ~1000 hours in ED, and I'm already (for years) a member in a great Players Faction, with discord and etc.

But for just 2 hours I'd would like to join to an adventure of somebody else, or create spontaneous wing with 1-2 players and do wing missions... while chatting.
Last time in a CG missions i had a great "this kind of" experience, when the CG goal system was busy with Mobius Private Group members, and a lot of players was hanging around in the same system, so the system chat was really busy. And it was working well!

There was a Commander who encouraged the players to play together "something" in a wing, I joined and that was the most intense/enjoyable experience in ED in the last 2 years - play with "strangers" spontaneously - in good mood.
