I Love Elite but...

I'm not on-board with a global chat idea.
I'm assuming it would get cluttered.
Wouldn't a global chat in ED encompass a large number of players across servers/instances? You're talking all players throughout the galaxy, not just a system chat.
The chat screen would look like an MMO game. I don't want a Warframe textbox scrolling nonstop, I would relegate that to its own tab and ignore it immediately.

I'm thinking a voice chat system not text.
So u enter a system chances are there's knowone there. In fact 99.9% of the time there's knowone there. But if you enter a popular system like deciat or San Tu, then you'll immediately hear voice chat.
Course you can mute block or Just kill it immediately. That's your choice as a cmdr. But some of us would choose to partake in the chat.
Obscenities, threats, intimidation, etc are not allowed so it would have to be custom made to take that into account. Those who behave badly face punitive measures like a ban or even deletion.
The whole point of it is to create an ingame (not discord) chat system that's friendly and an asset to elite odyssey. And Horizons.
VR Cmdrs find it hard to type whilst wearing a headset so it's a +1 for them.

Hi there,

I post my message here because I don't really know where to post it. Thank you Rootsrat

I am an occasional player of Elite Dangerous Odyssey, I discovered the franchise in 2018 with Horizon.

Far be it from me to make a comparison with Star Citizen, and I suspect that this subject must have been addressed many times, but I really find it a shame not to have a "Global chat" between commanders, like on Star Citizen.

From my little experience on Elite, I find it really unfortunate that despite the fact that we are in an open world, we come across so few pilots and have so little interactivity.

I love the lore of Elite, I really like this game. But I can't play it alone because I have this lack of talking with other players.

If you play alone like me, the game seems empty and you really feel like you're alone in the world when you're not!

I hope that one day we will have this kind of chat, I also know that many are against this idea but I still allow myself to formulate it.

What do you think?

Thank you all for taking the time to read me

1.) There is no „but“ after I love Elite. ;-)
2.) Player groups. Discord. Problem solved.

I don't think that global voice chat would work, but if implemented as some sort of intergalactic "radio" with multiple channels/frequences and one can "tune" to listen specific channel and "scan" to detect activity in a way similar to system danger indicator on the ship HUD. The others could send a text messages which would be synthesized in voice. I could imagin this as not breaking immersion as just global chat.

The other thing is proximity voice chat. In certain situations it would be convenient.

I'd be happy with "global chat" in ED too, as I am in SC.

As a working father, I'm not a daily gamer. Sometimes just play 1 night/week for 2 hours, sometimes I'm away for weeks.
When I suddenly decide to play ED, I just want to have great fun... but NOT ALONE. I'd like to be in a GALAXY, where other pilots are working on their own missions, goals, and communicate with them right there.

That is working in SC - just because they have "global chat".
In every minute you can have company for a "mission",, or "goal"..or just for lazy mining.
Surprisingly good conversations, friends in a session, in good mood.

And yes, I have ~1000 hours in ED, and I'm already (for years) a member in a great Players Faction, with discord and etc.

But for just 2 hours I'd would like to join to an adventure of somebody else, or create spontaneous wing with 1-2 players and do wing missions... while chatting.
Last time in a CG missions i had a great "this kind of" experience, when the CG goal system was busy with Mobius Private Group members, and a lot of players was hanging around in the same system, so the system chat was really busy. And it was working well!

There was a Commander who encouraged the players to play together "something" in a wing, I joined and that was the most intense/enjoyable experience in ED in the last 2 years - play with "strangers" spontaneously - in good mood.
I understand what you are saying, because global chat is one of my favorite features when playing Space Engineers online. I can go days or even weeks without encountering another player, yet I can talk to them while flying across the vast emptiness of space or mining an asteroid. The major difference is that usually there are only 16 players on a single server at a time, not thousands. A chat full of thousands of voices (texts) would be pretty much useless. System chat in a CG is already a waterfall scrolling text, and that's just a fraction of the players logged in.

Though if Horizons Legacy Mode ends up being pretty small, say a few hundred of us, perhaps such a global chat system would work here. Problem is that would require new code added to the client, and I think all the 3.8 coders have left the building.

Nah. Just look at Call of Duty streams at the moment to see how "well" global voice chat works. It's not worth considering.

I'm not talking about cloning an already existing albeit bad voice chat engine. I'm talking about being able to open comms with anyone who wants the same.
So say 5 cmdrs are in a given system say, deciat.
1 is a camping ganker orbiting the engineer base, 4 others are traders and running a ship in for engineering.
So... up pops a comms request from a cmdr asking what's the Coo with the ganker. The others say they've no idea but perhaps we should wing up say, and go in there turn the tables on the blighter.
Or it could go otherwise, nah l ain't getting into any aggro I don't pvp etc...so only 2 wing up.
Whatever happens its a sure fire way of combating said situation.
Any other cmdrs who don't want pvp would be in solo anyway. Galaxy wide comms would work in either so he'd get an option to decline in which case he can't hear what's going on, doesn't need too.
Point is, elites take on it would be totally different than any other voice chat engines out there. Customised to avoid voice spam (100s of cmdrs in a CG etc) but at same time allows those who want, to chat amongst whomever partook.
I never envisaged the inane drone of total tosh that's normal chat, to be part of my idea of galaxy wide comms.

System chat with adjustable range would be cool. Explorers could dial it all the way up to chat with each other over great distances. Not realistic of course, but it might help break the monotony of FSSing and DSSing out in the black.

Damn good idea +1

Galaxy wide comms (without that annoying bleep!) Enabled thus would be good.
But it's imperative that regardless, it can be ignored blocked deleted reported even switched off. All our cmdrs have their quirks sated.

I agree, waterfall chat would be annoying and useless. But there are lot of (theorical) options to reduce (filter) players number in chat.

One of the most preferable by me:

Maybe we should create our own "ED System Chat Discord Channel" and overlay it while playing...
Only needs at least 50-100 online active players at the same time. ;-)
