I must be doing something wrong...

Getting frustrated with my Oculus VR experience.l. Because my older joystick/throttle weren't working the way I wanted them to I went ahead and purchased a Thrust master T16000m FCS (joystick & throttle). Set up their "TARGET" program and brought it into ED Controls (as Target HOTUS...). Nothing worked, ED never recognized the controller movements, even though it showed it as an option in Controls. After many hours of fiddling and reinstalling I defaulted to just the 'T16000 Joystick' in Controls and that gets me back into the game HOWEVER many of my saved bindings in options (i.e. Reset HMD - and even the T16000!!!) never save from the previous session. I'm constantly having to go to my MOUSE and reset these options and others... (and I still don't know why, after following Thrustmaster's instructions, their Target HOTUS profile didn't work at all in ED...)

And because I decided not to keep taking off my headset to look at my throttle/joystick/mouse I went ahead and purchased the ASTRA voice pack from HCS. I followed their tutorial, but many of the bindings that are already in Elite Dangerous don't carryover as voice promps (although some do i.e. 'Thrusters x%', 'Delightful View', 'Next Target'...). ASTRA clearly understands many ED commands, but many don't carry over between the two programs.

For instance, when I tell ASTRA to Retract Landing Gear she says she does, but she doesn't, or Retract Weapons.... I still have to manually key the joystick Bindings that I have set up for those. It's the same with 'Request Docking'...). She's supposed to toggle the binding for Communication/Location/Request Docking but she doesn't, and many of the other bindings that I have set up in ED don't carry over to ASTRA, even though I have linked the two per the instructions.

I know this isn't an HCS site for an ASTRA issue, but I'm led to believe the two are related to the ED program, because my initial Bindings (Reset HMD... )do not carry over from session to session.

I have an Oculus Rift with an Asus ROG G20 Pc along with the latest Hardware (Thrustmaster) Software (Elite Dangerous) and Expansions (HCS ASTRA) - and yet here I am frustrated that I can't just fly ... I'm currently doing my 4th uninstall of ED, VoiceAttack, HCS Astra and Thrustmaster Drivers and doing a fresh reinstall - but I fear I'm repeating the same steps and expecting a different result. Really, I'm not insane - I just need someone to help me out of my frustration.

I use the T16000m FCS with a HTC voice pack with no problem.
I did not install TARGET
I have a Vive but I don't think that makes any difference.

ED bindings do not automatically carry over to Voice attack, you have to check if
VA uses the same keys as ED.

I had similar issues with the TARGET software - it's bloody awful to use, and the DirectX problem of too many buttons seemed to be a factor as well. So I to just remapped everything manually, and that way you know what the buttons actually do, and you can be more comfortable with your own setup. Voice Attack is very patchy for me as well. It's highly likely to be part soundcard, part mic quality and part lack of voice training that will be causing some issues. Don't forget you can set an option in VA to show you the confidence level of what it's 'guessing' so you can tell where the problem areas are.

As far as I understand it, you need to ensure the key or button press in VA for the 'Gear Down' command is set to the same button / key as you have bound in Elite.

All VA does is virtually press a button or key when a particular phrase is spoken. For example:

When you say 'Gear Down', VA presses the POV up button on Joystick 1. Providing I have Gear down bound to the POV up button on Joystick 1 in Elite - that command will work.

I have no issues using TARGET and VA. Then again I don't use VA for any ship functionality other than taking screenshots as I found it too unreliable. Other than that, I purely use it to open VLC and music playlists, randomising / unrandomising them, skipping songs, pausing / resuming songs, adjusting volume etc.

Having to repeat gear down 10 times in row really annoyed me. No amount of voice training seems to fix those odd occassions of frustation where VA simply will not recognise what you say. Hence why I only use it for non-essential functions.

I have two T16000m FCSs. You will need to rebind! I did. Its a pain. But once it is done...

Also, regarding VA:
What I do is say the command I want to use and then look at what VA thinks I am saying. I then add what it thinks I am saying to the list of phrases that VA is listening for.

This is a great tip.

VA can easily interpret you speaking - "Gear Down" as Fear Down, Ear Down, Mere Down, Grear Frown etc etc etc...

I did a fresh install of ED, VoiceAttack and ASTRA. I followed the ASTRA bindings tutorial to the letter. She seems to respond fine, maybe she will work, maybe not - I don't know - BECAUSE after setting up the binds my controller in ED is no longer the T16000m, it's now "Custom". The binds are all there, but when I start ED my joystick is unresponsive. It'll respond fine if I toggle back to T16000m, but the ASTRA bindings aren't there. I did a Windows calibration of the joystick but it still doesn't work. Any ideas?

Go to the HCS website where you bought ASTRA and there is a totorial video that walks you through the custom keybindings. all the keybindings need to go on the right side in the controls settings. Make L for deply/retract landing gear and that will fix that issue. I use the same HOTAS setup you do and I never messed with importing the controls from TARGET for ED. I just set it up based on the ASTRA keybinding video from their website as a custom profile in the controls menu and it has worked fine for me since day one.

I bought Astra when I first got VA. It was kinda neat at first but after a while I got tired of all the chatter and the bloated command list. At first, I just deleted a lot of the minutiae. Later, I just made my own profile. I found the easiest way to do that was to set up my keystroke and hotas in game first, the way I wanted them. Then made my VA profile based on that. This also keeps the profile editing simple and easier to remember.
I can also recommend IVONA voice synthesizer which give a nice quality text to speech response when used in a command. Ivona is pricey but worth it since you can also use the reader for large documents, web articles, proof reading and such. They have many voices and languages/accents. I use AMY. I think she is the most realistic English voice. She even sounds a little like ASTRA. Way better than what Windows gives you.

The problem I'm trying to overcome is that, everytime I enter the key commands per the Astra YouTube video tutorial ED creates a Custom Preset. My T16000m locks up when this Preset is used. It works fine if I use the T16000m Preset - there must be something in the Custom Preset that is causing a conflict, but I don't know. I would think this would have been flushed out by now if that was the case.

Anyone else have problems with the T16000m and Custom Preset?

I followed the Astra YouTube video regarding entering the keypresses in ED Controls. When I save the bindings it changes my Preset to Custom instead of T16000m. This Custom Preset completely locks up my T16000m. The T16000m Preset works fine if I toggle that one, but the Custom Preset give me nothing to my joystick. Anyone else have problems with their T16000m and Custom Presets?

I had problems with T16000m's target software. It locks out ED. Would it be possible to try without Target?

I fly FA off 100% and can happily scoop up mining fragments on this joystick's vanilla settings without the curves provided in Target.

Also as soon as you change a setting, the controls get saved in Custom.

No trouble at all, although I've not touched TARGET, it's installed but I had no need to use it.
