Frontier is in trouble because David Braben is a harsh master. I hear that recently, he revoked the tea privileges of the entire Elite Dangerous team, because they said they couldn't get landing on Earth-like worlds in within a year. Now the devs toil in agony, longing for the day when they can finally drink tea again.
They have already lost their coffee and pizza privileges when the roadmap slipped earlier.

In the reading of these elements, it seems effectively that Frontier is in severe difficulty

:)

Which Elite isn't and never will be. Elite is an indie title.

Yes.... Once again, all I did was state what an AAA game is!

Explanatory analogy:

Poster: What's a cow?

Me: Oh, I know that - a cow is a bovine animal that we get meat and milk from. Goes "moo".

Other posters: Argh! Elite doesn't need cows!

I know. I was clarifying for our studio audience. Expecting AAA content from a relatively small indie game is foolish.

Indie stands for independent. Independent game publishing is when a development studio publishes it's own game rather than selling and marketing it through the established game publishing industry. Size has nothing to do with it.

In my opinion, Elite is in 'trouble' every time a new, shinier, game comes out.
But when push comes to shove, Commanders will migrate back to being Dangerous.

I doubt they will.
Honestly said if Star Citizen Hits and keeps even 30% of their Promises. Alot of Commanders will be there and stay there.

But this and ED being in Trouble is two different matters.
ED in Theory got its Game Finished. They got Released. So they Purely work by releasing Extensions now.
And even if they lose some Customers. They are far away from going Bankrupt unless they do something stupid like turning the Game into some Hardcore Audience only thing where you get Killed by Cheating AI all the time (2.1 eherm eherm) :p

I assume even with half the Userbase they got now. They would still be able to continue the Game and even Update it.
So no Worries on that Front.

No steam graph's yet.. frankly I'm disappointed.

I'm afraid OP's concerns are legitimate, according to my sources...

There is no exact, widely accepted definition of what constitutes an "indie game",[5][6][7][8] however, indie games generally share certain characteristics. Indie games are developed by individuals, small teams, or small independent companies;[6][9][10] companies that are often specifically formed for the development of one specific game. Typically, indie games are smaller than mainstream titles.[10] Indie game developers are generally not financially backed by video game publishers (who are risk-averse and prefer big-budget games)[11] and usually have little to no budget available.[5][6][8][12][13] Being independent, indie developers do not have controlling interests[7] or creative limitations[6][14][8] and do not require publisher approval[5] as mainstream game developers usually do.[15] Design decisions are thus also not limited by the allocated budget.[14] Furthermore, smaller team sizes increase individual involvement.[16]
I'm an indie game developer. Like I said, I think we are having language issues with the word definition. What is generally meant by "an indie game" is different than your legalistic definition of it.

I've looked in my crystal ball and I'm afraid to say the news is not good in the long term. The heat death of universe appears to be unavoidable and FD won't survive it. Actually it gets worse. Long before that the sun will become a red giant and swell to such a size it will consume the earth. Not that earth will still be habitable then. The oceans will have boiled away long before that. But that's all a long way in the future. Plenty of time to finish E: D , heck SC might even be released by then:D

I few days ago I would have said no, but after seeing the latest Star Citizen updates, planetary features, weather effects, and almost 100 ships, I changed my mind - and its still only in Alpha. I think they will keep developing SC until its better then FDs road map for E.D and release it in maybe 2 or 3 years time. I dont like many things about Star Citizen, like all the walking about inside stations just to get a part upgrade or a mission - not lists of missions and quick launch like E.D. But they do seem to have got their seemless planets looking amazing, so it will depend on the content as to whether SC is good enough. I dont see No Mans Sky will ever be a threat, and all the other space clones look like Freelancer - and thats just too arcadey for me. But yes, I feel when SC is the only game which could seriously tear this game apart, and after all the millions they spent on it, maybe not surprising. But I also feel they will release SC unfinished due to pressure, just like No Mans Sky, and this will mean the game is a letdown.

Chris Roberts took space simmers money with promises like "nothing like Freelancer" and stuff like "dust off your joysticks".

They have pivoted into a mouse driven MMO long ago, but still aren't ready to admit it. The early backers gave them hundreds and thousands(!) of dollars, and have been thrown under the bus.

Elite has issues, but SC is not much of a threat. Not for those who like space sims anyway.
