I Play on Solo Play

As the title says, I play on Solo Play, and I am not ashamed to admit it.

To start off, I'm a very introverted person. That doesn't mean I'm shy or am otherwise adversed to playing with other people. I just means I don't feel the same drive or thrill from doing so. If and when I'm presented with the opportunity to play with others, I'm more than happy to engage. But after it's over I need to recharge. It's draining rather than energizing. As a result, I generally tend to be more selective about how and when I spend my time, and who I'm spending it with. On top of that, my internet connection is less than stellar, with a strict data cap and high average of 600ms latency times.

Yes, this means I miss out on the vast majority of stuff that happens in the game that the community stirs up. And I do feel like I just missed out on something great sometimes. But every time I go into Open Play I'm constantly worried that I'm going to be plagued by players or groups of players that do nothing but harass and bully.

I'm not opposed to engaging a bounty hunter or pirate player in combat. If they win and I have to pay the rebuy costs, so be it. It was still a fun experience. But I read the forums. I keep my ear to the ground when it comes to gaming. I know all too well the horror stories that come from games like EVE: Online and Elite: Dangerous. I know that there ARE effectively in-game groups of players that practically live in these games and run it like a mafia or cartel.

When I play games, nothing gets to me faster than when I die to the bull that I had no chance against. As I said, when someone beats me in combat, I'm fine with it. But even in Solo Play, the vast majority of the ships I've lost haven't been lost because I lost a fair fight or because I crashed into something. They've been because of bugs and glitches. Like the NPC's 1-shotting me just after the engineers went live, or when I spawned inside a wall when I load up the game. Stupid stuff like that, and I'd really, REALLY rather not add yet another dimension to that kind of stuff going wrong. And that's not even counting the fact that I'm still not convinced Solo Play should be affected by the online community.

If this game had a real offline mode, I'd play it.

I dunno. As I go back and read this post, I realize it came off a lot more negative than I meant it to. I'm not even really sure I conveyed the reason I started the thread.

I guess the TL:DR version of it is that I'd "like" to be a more active member of the Elite community. But all the bull that kinda comes with that is just too draining on me. I enjoy it from time to time, but it's never long before I go back into my Solo Play shell. It's just too much.

I've been playing the Elite franchise since the original, and love the story, lore, and all of the meat the franchise has to offer, but with Elite: Dangerous and it's community driven events, I just question humanity, and wonder if it's really worth the effort.

Oh I dunno, Ive had a few rich tourist request two tonnes of fruit and veg fer "business" purposes to make the trip more comfy...the wildlife certainly know how to party on long journeys in between geysers. One is just the driver and the tourist is just cargo that sometimes ye would happily drop if ye could if only we had airlocks ^

Nothing wrong with Solo mode. Nothing to be ashamed of either. Those who will insult your choice of gameplay are not worth responding to and best added to your "Ignore List". I can't tell you how many of these self proclaimed aces I have blown out of the sky over the years, provided they didn't combat log first. ;)

I have generally found that the ones who pontificate about their flying and combat prowess every chance they get, tend to be pretty mediocre in actual practice. Either that or just plain cowards who will log on you the second their last shield cell bank has been used up. ;)

P.S. If you are looking for like minded pilots in this game, who like to see other human commanders flying around but do not like PvP, check out the MOBIUS PVE private group! Gives you the same safe and sane experience as solo, along with the ability to see and interact with other human players who have no desire to be griefed by all those Open based combat loggers waiting to happen the second they start losing. ;)

And unlike the majority of OPEN instances that are not much more populated than a solo session the majority of the time, in a typical Mobius session you will actually see human players at most of the popular systems within the bubble most of the time. Open is highly overrated in this aspect by comparison.

I play in Solo, most of the time. Occasionally in Open to have other fun. Also, in group with friends and family. It all depends on what I'm playing, plus, exploration isn't about meeting people anyway. Going to the ruins, I rather experience it as if I was alone there and not a Disneyland with 5 million visitors and barely able to move. I want to feel the vast and empty space of our galaxy, not the filled with people in every corner of the universe. Gives me the wrong feeling (immersion ;)).

Seems like Mobius is full. Reached maxed number of members. I wonder why...

Again? Took less than a week this time to hit the 20k limit on the latest PG slot. ;) (likely due to the new PS4 community discovering the benefits of Mobius for the first time)

They just haven't updated everything yet. You can still sign up at that link, and they will get you hooked up the same as always. Until FDEV gives them an exception to the normal 20,000 player limit on a Private Group, you will see this issue cropping up every week or so as they max out one PG slot after another.

Yeah... In terms popularity, Mobius trumps OPEN by a huge amount, and has done for years.

A thought... Maybe there should be two different Open modes? One Open/Dangerous and one Open/Safe. Or something like that. Basically, the servers would have a stricter crime/punishment in safe mode so it would be more of a community/social open mode (and good for beginners). While the Dangerous mode would have the servers overlook crime, a free for all pirating and griefing. Now, choose which one to play. If Open/Safe existed, I might go there instead of Solo. Now, of course it wouldn't change how NPCs work, they would be the same in either mode, in other words, Open/Safe would be like Mobius.

20k members? Wow! Must be because of PS4 introduction too.

The dangers of Open have been extremely exaggerated by those that don't use Open....

See, I'm not entirely convinced of the logic behind statements like that.

It's kind of like when people say you shouldn't be afraid of sharks or tigers or whatever.
The assertion that you "shouldn't be afraid" is always based on the supposition that it will be possible to avoid coming into contact with a shark or tiger or whatever.
If you DO actually run into a tiger, that's not going to help you.
The tiger is built for killin' stuff. It's what it does.
Chances are that you're weaker than the tiger, you're slower than the tiger and you aren't going to be able to defend yourself against the tiger.
You should be afraid of tigers.

Personally, I can see where the OP is coming from.
Part of the fun of a game is that you're in a world that has "rules".
You know when you're likely to come out ahead and you know when it's smart to beat a retreat.
Playing a multiplayer game screws that up by turning the game-world into an unpredictable place.

I can't say I spend a lot of time doing multi-player stuff in ED but even the small things make Open worthwhile for me.
When you're leaving a station and you flash your lights at a CMDR on the way in and they flash their lights back at you, or when you're sight-seeing around some deserted megaship and end up chatting about the audio logs to some random CMDR who's showed up at the same time.

I guess it just depends what people want from their time playing a game.

Not for long. We're working on opening a new group to accommodate people.

Each platform has it's own group, and there are divisions in some cases by region as well. I think the main Mobius PvE (PC/Mac) group is at capacity, or nearly so, and the admins are working on setting up another one for the overflow.

I play all 3.

It just depends on the situation.

For me, the only real difference is the amount of hollow squares on the screen and the occasional "o7 CMDR" from other players.

I generally play in Private group mode,
Recently for the open beta I gave it a try in open play and while I was chatting to one of the group that had met up at the site we were testing... I got sucker punched... 2 maybe 3 seconds I was dead... the killing pilot left the scene with a o7o7o7 hahaha message.

NOPE, I trust no one! and that ain't never gonna change.

No, I stand by that statement, they are exaggerated. Outside of a CG or hotspot you'll almost never run into another hostile player, the bubble is huge and most actual combat takes place at a CG. Even in the CG the ratio of hostile to neutral CMDRs is so lopsided to the latter that you are basically playing lottery in running into a hostile. Think of it like Salmon swimming upstream past the bears, they will catch what they can but most will get past, without even being hindered even.

(Also if you do run into a Big Cat the last thing you should do is be afraid, panic is what get them to attack. Showing no fear actually unnerves big cats)

I was expecting the typical "Community is so mean" bawling we are all so used in these forums. However you make very valid points, and I understand that an introverted person prefers to play in solo mode rather than open.

Nothing wrong with Solo. Multiplayer is something which has been done to death for the last 17 years, and honestly I'm rather tired of it.

Mobius is a good PG, less bloodthirsty cavemen, and more decent folk. If you want people in your game, for whatever reason, then you can get it there without all the crap Open brings to the table.

Nothing wrong with solo, especially if you have connectivity issues. I play open usually but I like it, including the risk and have been blown up a few times, but is no big deal as long as you can afford the rebuy.

Solo is legit. All modes are legit.

Repped for 'bloodthirsty cavemen'. lol

I play solo as well, and I'm an extrovert. I just deal with people in real life enough and when I want to zone out and just play, the last thing I want to do is try and socialize with other people or groups. I've done the MMO thing in the past and one of the reason I love ED, is that they do have an option of solo mode in a generation of online mutliplayers.

No need to be ashamed at it, and I don't know what you are thinking you are missing in Open, there really isn't anything I want in that mode that Solo doesn't have (I hate the GC's). Plus if one wants a safer environment they have those types of private servers like Mobius and such, so one of the biggest things with this game is there's options and they really tapped in to every player base rather than pidgeon holeing themselves to only one specific group, that was a great move on Frontier's part...
