I Play on Solo Play

I feel the debate of open play vs solo will continue for the life of the game.

The problem is there are players who want to use open play for the social aspect (run into another player and compare notes within the game, etc.) - this is me by the way, then there are those who use open play and play the role of a pirate and attack you for your precious cargo (par for the course) and then there are those who use open for the simple self-gratification and fun of deliberately interfering with other players' time within the game, using the reason that they're simply playing the game as the 'bad-guy' role, despite the fact that the player they attacked has zero cargo, bounty, value, etc.

I play open all the time and hardly see anyone... and those I do happen to come across aren't too willing to stick around after you strike up a conversation!

The dangers of Open have been extremely exaggerated by those that don't use Open. Outside of CGs and certain hotspots you'll likely never run into a hostile CMDR, and if you build a ship and follow proper flight manuevers you'll be fine 98% of the time.

Extremely exaggerated are strong words. It's true you hardly find another CMDR outside of CGs, POIs, engineer bases, etc. but all these are what makes the game - i.e., you need to visit them and that's where griefers hang out to ambush other players.

If griefers and their sympathisers claim playing in Open is safe, why are PGs like Mobious full (and I often find more CMDRs in here than Open) and there are CMDRs (some have set up groups like the Fuel Rats) to help protect newbies?

Edit: To Op, there's nothing wrong playing in Solo which is what I played when I first started except I have met some friends in another forum where we visit POIs and do CGs together sometimes - to have breaks from grinding ;)

As the title says, I play on Solo Play, and I am not ashamed to admit it.

There's a metaphor in there somewhere, probably. I am glad you enjoy solo, however there's as little need to either admit or explain it, as anyone in open. There will be no 'true' offline mode. So let it go. The 'true' offline games are becoming exceedingly rare, and mostly for good reasons.

You don't have to justify a thing. Just enjoy the game; and try to understand there are others who also want to play the game, but that they may have differing goals. Just as it's important to you, it's important to them. And to us as a whole. Try private groups, though, if you want to be part of something bigger; many of the player groups are BGS focused, rather than player-vs-player focused. Reach out, I'm sure some would love to have you on board.

Also Open is nowhere near as dangerous as is painted. Or as terrible. It just has more people in it. That can always go a few different ways, and it automatically carries more risk. But that risk is typically trivial to manage. Remember, it's not just you, there are many who play, for many reasons; and your reason, is just as relevant as the next persons reason.

It's important many have a connection to the game, regardless of reasons, because this allows it to thrive and grow.

Fly safe.

Extremely exaggerated is also correct, the odds are so very slim to actually run into a griefer, in fact a lot of times I barely see PvPers in Open at the CGs, let alone the smaller subset that would be called griefers, and when I do there are enough players around that the chances of being pulled randomly are still slim. Furthermore by having a decent loadout (which need not be engineered, see the video link I put before) you reduce the likelihood of even becoming a target further down. And if you do get pulled a proper loadout will see you get clear.

Now if one wants to be in solo or private that's their choice, but this claim that Open is a place where everyone is out to kill you is laughable.

Fair enough TS. I played solo for awhile too; like you I was worried about hordes of PVP beasts swarming upon me. So I waited until I was pretty late in the game to do it. There aren't half as many ganks as people say though.

The only thing I will say is that it adds a lot of excitement. If you feel happy and properly challenged then keep doing solo. I like saying hello to other players too. And sometimes, I am the villain ;)

OP, I understand. I mostly play solo also. One of the things I like about exploration is the solitude. When I'm in a player group, I always seem to wind up chatting, instead of playing.

I enjoy Mobius too. I am able to interact with other cmdr's as much or little as either of us want. Usually it is just a "howdy, o7", but sometimes there is some back and forth. I have found a few commanders that we have friended and keep track of each other. Nice to see others out there. I almost always play Mobius with some open here and there. There is nothing wrong with Solo either.

Pointless thread is pointless :p

I play in open when I want some action, when I want to chill I just play solo; nothing out of the ordinary

Nothing wrong with Solo mode. Nothing to be ashamed of either. Those who will insult your choice of gameplay are not worth responding to and best added to your "Ignore List". I can't tell you how many of these self proclaimed aces I have blown out of the sky over the years, provided they didn't combat log first. ;)

I have generally found that the ones who pontificate about their flying and combat prowess every chance they get, tend to be pretty mediocre in actual practice. Either that or just plain cowards who will log on you the second their last shield cell bank has been used up. ;)

P.S. If you are looking for like minded pilots in this game, who like to see other human commanders flying around but do not like PvP, check out the MOBIUS PVE private group! Gives you the same safe and sane experience as solo, along with the ability to see and interact with other human players who have no desire to be griefed by all those Open based combat loggers waiting to happen the second they start losing. ;)

And unlike the majority of OPEN instances that are not much more populated than a solo session the majority of the time, in a typical Mobius session you will actually see human players at most of the popular systems within the bubble most of the time. Open is highly overrated in this aspect by comparison.

This. I LOVE Mobius PVE, because I can still see other players once in a while, but without the danger of someone blowing up my ship while I'm docking with 3 million credits of exploration data.

I am not introverted either. I just don't enjoy interacting with people I don't know, and given the attitudes of many folks nowadays, I really don't want to get to know most of them anyway. ;)

I am on Mobius PvE sometimes, but about the only interaction I get are o7 greetings. Most of the time there is nothing. So I find myself spending most of my game time in Solo again.

I am not a social animal. My wife is, and I drive her nuts, as I don't like going anywhere there are large groups of people. I just don't need other people to have fun. And playing games on a PC is an experience that I not accustomed to sharing with strangers. And with what little I have seen in this, my first MMO game experience, I have not seen anything to change my position on this.

I've had better experiences with other ED players on the forums here than I have in-game. :)

Regardless of what you might read on the forums.

Open, PG, or solo no one is better or worse than the other.

There is no right way to play ED bar the way you, I or anybody else wants to play it.

I mostly play solo but I do jump into open from time to time. Last time I landed on HIP 14909? at the alien site and it was full of players because it was mentioned in Obsidian Ant's vid about Palin mission. It was really cool seeing all the ships parked around. The first time I panicked about a possible grifer and sent the ship away, then realized I need it close by and had to drive far out to recall it. So I realized I have no option but to risk it if I want to stay in open.
Anyway, it was a great experience to drive around with others and looking at all those ships. Yet it would take just one to spoil all the fun and luckily people there were for the gameplay experience.

As the title says, I play on Solo Play, and I am not ashamed to admit it.

To start off, I'm a very introverted person.

Say no more, I got this.
