General / Off-Topic I prefer Season 1 of Space 1999 to Season 2

Gives me chills to hear the intro.

I have a couple of unopened plastic mold models of both the Eagle and the base in storage somewhere.

I preferred Season one over two, because I felt it was darker and a bit more spooky.

There's an interesting post that discussed the transition between seasons and probably explains what we feel: https://www.gerryanderson.co.uk/thespace1999metamorphosis/
I didn't know all that was going on in the background of the production. Actually, now I remember that there were more (silly) monsters in S2, but the first season was more psychological, not so visual. The monsters were more within than without, if I'm not misremembering.

A fairly recent audiobook release of Breakaway: https://www.bigfinish.com/releases/v/space-1999-breakaway-2127

Oh, they actually have a couple more, just released this year:

I guess Breakaway. Before they went nuts in space, and then went even more nuts in space :)
There's a lot of nuts in space. :D

The breakaway and travel through space is ... beyond unbelievable and so unscientific, but back then, what did I know. Somehow that didn't affect me at all. Our Moon must've been blasted into FTL speed considering how many planets and stuff they encountered.

I think even at my young age at the time when they found the woman who could turn into animals I was thinking "this is a bit far-fetched" :)

Barry Morse's scientist character was my favorite, but he vanished unceremoniously in S2, after constructing the force field tower array that protected the base from the Black hole transit.

He was cool and had a mechanical heart. Years before Picard.

Never cared much for Maya in S2, or the monster-of-the-week plots.

Oh gosh. Yeah, I missed him too. It wasn't the same without him.

Yeah. I didn't care much for Maya either, and it seems like people I've talked to who knows the show but loved S2, they really liked her.

I’ve still got my Dinky green & white Eagle Transporter, though the Freighter disappeared over the years.

Series 1 for me all the way - there seemed to be a reason for the Alphan’s journey, like there was some outside intelligence guiding their journey (and presumably causing their in-between-episodes warp jumps), much better than the Star Trek wannabe it turned into for Series 2.

Still not a patch on its predecessor series, UFO - which originally it was going to be a direct sequel to.

yeah, UFO was great. Fond memories of late night watching on ITV - who seemed to perversely enjoy running them out of order so that the (minimal) plot made even less sense :)

All i can remember is a giant walking puke with a big eyeball...S2 I'm guessing?

My older bro had a metal eagle and the cargo used to detach...i think...or i imagined it did.

S1 for me, i didn't like Maya much either.
