Engineers I really dislike Selene Jean...

I get each engineer is for a different type of player, but I'm trying to unlock her so I can improve the hulls of all my ships (in whatever way required)... and this is by far my most hated Engineer. I don't like mining, I find this very tedious and boring. Exploration, combat, even very light trading I don't mind... but this... I cannot understate how much I dislike this one particular grind. Heck I knocked out Palins 5k ly requirement (5k out AND back for a 10k total) in a single day with a few breaks from the computer.

But her... I really, really, do not like her.

How have those of you who've done it managed to make it less tedious? I've tried music, netflix, etc etc and nothing makes this less painful. Sitting in a Type 7 atm with 4 mining lasers and 2 limpet controllers just grinding away in rings at the asteroids.

The 5 limpet controllers I have on my mining Python can't keep up with the 2 mining lasers I have installed - maybe you should fit more limpet controllers to increase the recovery rate of fragments?

I also have a 10-bin refinery installed to maximise the number of simultaneous commodities being processed.

It took me about 10 hours of play to mine the 500t required plu 10t of Painite.

Mining can actually be fun, sometimes. It is really relaxing thing to do, you float around those rocks in some big/heavy ship, there is no need to hurry...
Or if you do not like the idea of such activity - go mine in RES. Preferably with wing, but solo is an option too with something like anaconda... it is anything but relaxing/slow, you will have to constantly fight for your life :)

Specifically Metallic or will Metal Rich work? Also that means I'd have to move this type 7 out of this system which i originally had no plans to do. Ugh.

Metallic -- the asteroids will be brown with blobs of black/blue metal in them. I would recommend mining at a HazRES as it increases the drop rate of rarer minerals. If you're concerned about getting jumped by pirates, just drop out of supercruise at the HazRES beacon and then fly 10-15km away from it; they don't spawn out that far.

I actually enjoyed my time mining to unlock Selene -- I probably would have never tried mining otherwise. What killed my interest in dabbling with it long-term was attempting to mine the 50 bromelite needed to unlock Bill Turner. Ice ring drop tables are terrible.

Anaconda with 10 bins and 7 limpets going took around 3 hours to get 500 tons and got 28 tons of painite. Don't forget to use a prospector limpet, gives higher yield and can even give you more types of minerals it wouldn't otherwise give. As far as Rez sites, I honaestly didn't see a difference from a hazardous and just dropping in a random spot on the rings. As long sat it's the pristine metallic type of course.

Mmm, makes you wonder if the people who placed her there knew exactly what the name of that star means in Swedish :)

Go to Frey and 4 a inner ring and take a load of limpets . I took 140 and ended up with 10 left, the majority were used on prospecting, but i got my required 10 Painite and 5 extra.

Total time 1 hour 45 minutes+

I hate mining also. The Conda made it acceptable.

Yeah, a type 7 is way underpowered for mining, a type-9 is horrible to maneuver.

You just have to refine them. You don't have to sell them. And all materials apply so forget about prospecting for specifics. Your ship configuration is very inefficient. Use 2 medium mining lasers, 1 prospecting limpet, 12 collector limpets and a 4A refinery on a large ship. Then mine away and discard all cargo. The prospecting limpet is only to increase the asteroid's output - you don't care what you get. You should be able to do 500T within an hour.

A T-7 is only a good miner if you really enjoy the process. The basic reason is that small mining lasers are exceptionally terrible. Use something that can handle mediums. One medium mining laser is almost as quick as 3x smalls, and it's way easier on the capacitor. An Asp is a good lower-cost miner for this, next step up would be Dropship/Clipper, and a Python is great. Conda/Corvette/Cutter if you really have the cash.

Equip 2x medium mining lasers (just ignore smalls), or 3x if you can. Try to have at least 3x collector limpets per medium mining laser.

I guarantee you it will be significantly less painful if you get out of that T-7, with it's small hardpoints and c3 distro. That's just masochistic.

Mining have several specifics that you need to understand, otherwise it becomes a real pain.
1) Small mining lasers suck. Anything that forces you to use them is bad for mining.
2) The more Collector limpet drones, the better. Actually, cargo hold matters less then Collector limpet amount.
3) Universal and exploration ships are best miners. Traders suck at it.
4) Only ever mine pristine metallic rings.

Yep I hated her too...the mining 500t of resources wasn't bad...but the painite...hell. I was getting 3 per hour at some rings. I believe I found a pattern too ;)

- very small asteroids had I higher chance I noticed
-large irregular ones with a high rotation rate also had some high yields and chance of spawn (probs due to killing limpets due to irregular features)
-regular-large asteroids with smooth surfaces hardly ever contained any I noticed

Were you mining pristine metallic rings? Thats strange. Usually I bring 40-50 t of painite out of my 320 t cargo hold. Less then 30 (10% of cargo) is very unlucky for me.
