Right now, the only SRV we have is the scarab and it's a real chore to move on low grav planets. It can't be upgraded, it can't switch its equipment, after spending a lot of time with it I find it just boring. You can't even drive up a steep hill on a 0.2 G planet with it. It's the sidwinder of ground vehicles so to say.
Can we get alternatives for an SRV? It's the third millenium and we still move around in a moon rover with a turret. I think spicing up the variety in normal SRV gameplay would give players the option to have an SRV for their playstyle. Right now the Scarab does neither maneuver well, nor does it pack the punch for a fight.
Some suggestions:
- A skimmer-type recon SRV that hovers closely over the ground (around 3m). Due to its ultra-light chassis it doesn't have a cargo hatch and can only collect materials. It's equipped with a small pulse Laser and weak shields, but quite swift. Sensor range is around 70% of the normal Scarab. Also scans at 3x the speed.
- Heavy-duty mining SRV: Reduced range on non-mineral POI range on the Wave scanner, however it can detect minerals up to 2x further away and shows what type it is (outcrop, mesosiderate etc.) Equipped with a high-precision mining laser that can get more common and uncommon minerals out of nodes. It would have no shields but a really heavy and stable chassis, with tracks instead of wheels and would be able to simulate a 1.0 G constantly with its upwards thrusters. Also has a better maneuverability on difficult terrain, but only rudimentary upwards thrust.
- Combat SRV: A modified Scarab that features a small railgun and a beam laser and improved shields over slower driving speed and less sensor range. This would come in handy when exploring guardian ruins, or trying to shoot some scavangers from the sky. Also skimmer combat missions would become a real firefight.
