I screwed up somehow...

Hello,

I went to save a copy of my key bindings and now the custom controls dont even show up in the game menu.

1. If I uninstall/reinstall the game files, is my progress/fleet/Cmdr profile saved in the network?

2. Anyone familiar with this situation? I can post more deets about the process I took, but I'd kinda like to "clean the files" using a reinstall first. (Assuming game progress ain't forfeit)

If your key bindings were reconfigured by you and your not talking about the default. Then you had better have made a copy and stored it somewhere. Fdev DOES NOT have a copy of your re-configurations.

Your CMDR save is on FD's servers, but there's not really a need to reinstall the game just because your bindings have messed up.

When you saved your .binds file as a copy, where did you save it? If you saved it in the same folder, that could account for the mix up as the game will get confused if there are two .binds files with the same name, so if that's the case just move the backup file to a separate location.

Even if something else has got messed up in your bindings folder, simply restarting the game will recreate a new clean custom.binds file. Probably worth explaining what you did, and as I said, no need to reinstall the game. At the very worst you can validate the game files from the launcher.

There is only one binds file in the folder. I have restarted the game a couple time as well as restarting my computer.
I didn't copy the file, I copied the text in notepad. Is that where I went wrong?
Thanks for the reply.

Did you 'copy and paste' or 'cut and paste'? Because if you 'cut and pasted' it, then that's exactly the problem.

If you saved that notepad file somewhere, you should be able to paste it back into the file.

That happens to me sometimes too. Its happened twice since 2017 for me. On pc I think there's ways you can save those outside of game and reinsert them but I'm on ps4 and don't know the process

What is the name of the .binds file in the folder. There should for sure be more than that.

Just to confirm, you are looking in the /Users/yourusername/AppData/Local/Frontier Developments/Elite Dangerous/Options/Bindings folder.

The default file is Custom.3.0.binds (from memory), and that is the file that gets written to when you start to set up your own bindings, and if you do so, it's worth renaming it to something else, as a missing or additional controller connected when the game starts will lead it to assume you are starting again and you run the risk of overwriting it. But that's a whole different subject.

If the folder above doesn't have the default .binds files, I'd suggest validating the game files from the launcher. It's under options at the top of the launcher if I remember right.

Edit - Once you get things sorted out, this post tells you how to rename your custom . binds file.

There is a possibility that "System Restore" has taken a backup of your files. If you navigate to your "binds" folder select the binds file and right click it. Properties > Previous Versions, tab will show you if a backup has been taken and can be restored.
[The usual warnings about taking backups etc.]
