Newcomer / Intro I seem to be in a bit of DoDo!

I've been flying exclusively in Federation space and have been marked as unfriendly for quie some time now. I just completed a kill pirates mission by kiling 4 pirates in Calor. I picked up a couple of fines from the Feds for carrying stolen cargo. After finishing the mission i went to the nearest station, sold my hooky gear, paid of my Federation fine and then noticed that i'm now hostile with the Federation!

Do smuggling fines stack against your rep? How do i get my rep back with the Federation? Obviously I can't now go to Nav Beacons or RES to get bounties as I'll get wasted y the Fed ships there. Or will I.

I got caught twice smuggling stolen goods, and unfortunitely it does massive reputation damage when you get caught, even after paying the fines. But even as hostile in other systems i could accept bulletinboard missions from factions that are federationsided, and with that i managed to get my rep back to friendly. Then i accidently hit a federationship during combat with a wanted member, and went back to unfriendly immediatly again.

Basicly, i gave up on the federation and pledged allegiance to the Empire, somewhat it's alot easier maintaning reputation with them then with the federation. (probably not true, but from my experiences it's just how it went for me)

Feds are very easily upset....ive made it to chief petty officer and am still unfriendly with them...... yep wanted and fines for anything hit you hard... ive not been hostile but the only way back is completed missions....

You can hunt bounties in independent space near to the federation, then sneak to a fed outpost to claim them

I'm "allied" with the Feds and all I've ever really done for them is bounty hunting, maybe do a bit of that and hand the vouchers in at an outpost.

Smuggling is the no.1 way of losing rep with a faction as far as I can see. The solution is not to get caught in the first place, go outside of Fed space or grovel and find yourself an outpost to start grinding rep from.

Ways of building rep include turning in bounties or exploration data. It is quite possible to gain a sizable bounty payment by using a KWS and hunting outside of Fed space, I find that no matter where I've been hunting sooner or later I have to find systems belonging to the main three factions to receive a large payout.

I couldn't tell you for sure if being hostile means instant attack, I don't think it does unless you are also wanted, so you should be safe at beacons and RES's.

Thanks guys. I can still land at Fed owned outposts but not risking the Fed main stations at the moment! Looks like I'll be joining the Empire after all.

Yeah I dropped from friendly to neutral due to a smuggling fine. Pretty annoying.

Do they attack you for being hostile? I thought that only happened if you were wanted.

I moved to an Independant system hoping to pick up bounties for the Federation but i've been getting Alliance and local unfortunately.

Any advice on wher best to go to get Federation bounties without being in federation space, (got ID by a fed whilst transiting Fed system and he was red), would be much appreciated.

Well looks like my BHing in Independent space has pair off. It wasn't showing last night, but when i logged in today it seems like I'm back at being unfriendly with the Feds. The bonus is that i've discovered that BHing in RES is MUCH MUCH better than Nav beacons. Though it does feel a little bit like a cheat hanging around whilst the NPCs do most of the damaging and then wading in for a bit to collect the bounty. Not complaining about the 170k i got from an Anaconda kill. I've gone from 250k to 2mil this weekend! Nice. I can now afford to equip the Adder for exploring properly now.
