PvP I think I accidentally defeated a PvPer

I was leaving a station in Robigo in an Asp when I saw another player on the scanner with hardpoints deployed. So far everyone I've seen there has been pretty friendly so hardpoints are unusual, but no sweat; only 30 minutes ago I had been running around the same station with hardpoints deployed myself in order to scan wakes, so it's not as much of a red flag as they would be normally. But I targeted the ship anyway to check. Scanner profile looks like it's just an adder or a hauler, no problem. It does say WANTED and it does seem to coming around to face me though.

Wait a minute, that's no hauler, that's a Fer-de-lance! And I've just exited the no-fire zone!

I scurry back into the no-fire zone, and breath a sigh of relief. The FDL is still following me though. Why though since I'm back in the zone? I'm curious now.
I fly past any possible mail-slot trajectory and move off to the side of the station so it's clear I'm just hanging around, not docking, not leaving. A few seconds later the Cmdr, still following, opened fire at me. I don't know what they hit me with (I'm not a PvPer), but it did hull damage right through my shields! Hey shields - you had ONE JOB! (And it also knocked out half my shields!)
First of all, yikes! I hit boost to scoot behind the side of the station and cut their weapon's line-of-sight to me as quickly as possible.
Secondly, what on Earth is that Cmdr thinking, attacking me in a no fire zone?!
As I flew in close to the station, it was a disco light-show of lasers shooting past me. (YES! The no-fire zone works like how I thought it works!) Normally I'm on edge when the station guns go off on a stuck NPC just in case I get caught in the crossfire, but this time it almost felt like the closer the lasers were, flashing past me, the warmer and cozier and safer the world was :)
Unfortunately in my flustered haste I think I lost my target lock (though at least I didn't nearly deploy landing gear, like last time I was trying to outrun someone), or I didn't hear the demise of the FDL, but when I started trying to reacquire it the ship was nowhere on the scanners. I'm pretty sure there wasn't time for it to have jumped out (even if they somehow got instantly clear of station mass-lock) and I don't think they flew out of the area (because there wasn't any edge-of-scanner activity), and there had been a LOT of laser fire from the station, so I think the most likely explanation is that they... got blown to smithereens.

It's a bit of a recurring in-joke that some of us Cmdr's out by Robigo/Sothis have more money than experience, but losing a shiny FerDeLance by starting something inside a no-fire zone, that's a new one to me :D
(I should have checked their pilot rank right at the start, but unfortunately either I didn't or I don't remember it.)

I've survived previous run-ins with unprovoked attackers, but I think this counts as my first to-the-death PvP fight :D Thnx big-bro station :)

Update: Factabulous noted I could find the pilot rank by checking my logs. I did so and discovered a whole lot more :D )

If you're on PC it might be in your journal files, if you really want to know

Wow, this is AMAZING:
I did what you suggested, updated my ancient EDDiscovery to work with modern logs and discovered that the Cmdr had actually sent us all a warning to LOCAL which I hadn't even seen because I had menus up until I launched:

To: LOCAL
From: CMDR [NameWithheldToProtectTheGuilty]
"This space station is now under the control of The Overlord [NameWithheldToProtectTheGuilty]"

To: LOCAL
From: CMDR [NameWithheldToProtectTheGuilty]
"I command all vesessels to remain docked indefinitely"

Then I obliviously wander out of the station, notice the hardpoints and take a closer look:

ShipTargeted 2018-10-22T00:49:35Z
Fer-de-Lance,
PilotName: cmdr[NameWithheldToProtectTheGuilty]
PilotRank: Deadly
ShieldHealth: 100.0,
HullHealth: 98.860847,
LegalStatus: Wanted,
Bounty: 800

As I proceed to accidentally call his bluff, someone else adds:

To: LOCAL
From CMDR [StillInTheStation]
"good luck with that kido"

And the rest is history:

"Target Lost"

OMG, finding all that context in the logs was awesome (and funny). Thanks for the tip!

I often think when ppl complain about others not talking it's probably because we don't even notice ;) Glad you found some background :)

I think the title of this thread should have been "Watched another kid commander defeat himself".

I wonder what Zarek Null, Overlord of the Galaxy, is doing these days...
Every time I hear his name I think of /dev/null, which is appropriate I think. This guy must have been a Zarek Null want-a-be.

Huh, another twist; congratulations to the Cmdr I guess for having a reputation that genuinely precedes formal introduction.

Now that the journal indicates "Deadly", i.e. experienced enough to know better, that firing in a no-fire is even stranger.
Maybe he thought he could disable my ship and get out of range fast enough to survive? (My Asp is fairly robust, maybe more than expected?)
Maybe it was meant to be a shot across the bows and I accidentally got my ship in the way? :)

Shocking.

There are certain cars driven by certain individuals that gives you a warm feeling inside when you see them pulled over by the police. This is pretty much the same thing. :D

Some grind it to elite and still have no idea how this game works, so I'd say ranks don't equal knoeledge or skill.

Module sniping is more difficult than just doing hull damage. Even if he succeeded, as long as you did not explode, you could just reboot your ship and get everything back online after he left.

There's one app that I know of, called
Elite G19s Companion app
that has an option to make all NPC and player comms red by Windows speech-to-text.
Great way to not miss those things

My EDDI does this. IDR how tho. >___> I set this stuff up like I chipped myself with data and then removed the skillset afterwards.

Also, I love fun stories like this one. :D

Three consonant letters?

OP, you didn't defeat a PvPer, you were first their target, then an observer of a suicide by station.

It's funny how often I see it happen, even funnier when a frag outfit Krait unloads their magazines, rams an Explorca, is bounced backwards by the collision, then immediately dies to the station while the Explorca only looses a ring of shields. :D
