I want auto pilot

After playing this game for a couple hundred hours I'm completely disinterested in traveling anywhere. Traveling has become extremely repetitive and tedious. I use an auto docking module which relieves some of the tedium when dealing with stations, but that's only part of it. At first traveling was cool because it was new, but now that the novelty has worn off it's just a chore.

try writing a macro you can use, or use a keyboard that can have them set for keys, or even ask around what others have done to fix this.

I've been wondering why this is omitted. Frontier had an auto pilot! The most you had to do in Frontier was jump to the system and then select where you wanted to go! It'd actually be quite useful to be able to do a frame shift auto pilot - if your travelling via multiple systems, it could do all of the jumps for you - great for exploring when heading out to unknown space!

Personally I'm not interested in seeing an autopilot introduced, but I understand why others want one. Will have to wait and see if Frontier thinks it fits in with their intent for the game.

Not sure how to respond to this thread.
I'm about 500 hours into the game (beta's etc included) and I still have to witness the docking computer doing it's job. Not even once have I considered using it so a complete auto-pilot just seems wrong on so many levels.

I consider myself a fanboy at this point cuz well, there's only a handful of games that ever kept me playing this long but still ... having not played the original games and only discovering this till premium beta, it would still feel so wrong having an auto pilot doing all the work.

This game provides me with a sort of "on-edge-but-still-comfortably" kind of feeling I haven't felt in a long time.

I think the point is that everyone plays the game in their own way.

Some people just want to get from A to B. I've spent a lot of time exploring - travelling 1000ly away from inhabited space. I've just made it back to Sol to complete a few errands. I now want to head back out, but don't want to have to make the jumps manually - it's boring!

The same as many of us invest in automatic cars, cruise control, auto lights, auto dimming mirrors etc etc. we still enjoy driving, but don't want to have to do it all. The minute self driving cars are invented, I'll be having one! And on that point, if self driving cars will be available in the 21st century then auto pilot on our ships should be a complete certainty! :)

Yea, let's get a space travelling game without the travelling. Let's get an auto-pilot, an auto-fighting module and an explorer, trading and mining module and we won't have to play at all. We'll just check in occasionally to see if there are any new numbers somewhere. It'll be awesome.

"Go here, thanks, computer. BTW, when interdicted, could you submit, then boost then jump back? And it would be nice if you could also auto request docking when you auto jump out of frameshift, and dock by yourself."

Oh and when you get there, interface with the market tool and pick the best commodities, and handle the trade route will you?"

It's a slippery slope. We human beings love to take shortcuts that cause us to miss the point of taking the journey.

An auto pilot might become handy when we can walk about our ships whilst in flight, it should be slower and unable to avoid interdictions though.

Another point though is that we are in multi crew ships, one day you'll be able to get a mate to do the flying for you whilst you engage in some other activity.

Have any of you played Frontier - a game which must be close to 25 years old?

That had an auto pilot and didn't ruin the game one bit - I spent more hours on that game than I can possibly imagine. Trading, exploring, combat - it was all there. You could be interdicted while in auto pilot and that was just part of it.

At the moment, Dangerous is a cut down Frontier. There's nothing in Dangerous that has added to Frontier - unless you include multiplayer which I'm not the slightest bit interested in.

I want a machine that does everything for me.

My target weight is 257.5kg. Should be achievable if I just sit here and click a button every 5 minutes.

No. Just no.

What on earth would we have left to do. All travel would take the same....oh....Hang on....

Troll?

I'm fairly sure that's still a long way off, unless they've stated that walking around ships and multi-crews are coming soon. Although I must say, the prospect of having multiple crew members such as one piloting and the other gunning or performing work with other systems (such as power distribution or gunning) is really exciting.

I d rather be able to jump to any system directly, fuel permiting, and let it take the total amount of time it would normaly take system hopping.

Frontier needed an autopilot because its physics engine meant manual flying was "challenging"

Not like people back then didn't slam it for being boring either, come on now

Please, FD, introduce an auto-pilot. I could do a brisk trade in the commodity known as 'AFK Tears' when they start getting interdicted and destroyed while watching the latest Spongebob episode instead of paying attention to what's around them. :D

I lol'd at this, and I approve! Bring on the auto pilot!
