I want to try mining

That's what prospector limpets are for.
Not saying that makes it more exciting, but they definitely make the process more efficient. Plus they increase the yield.

Sure you can use prospectors, but thats even slower because you shoto oen and it travel AGES. I with they were more like bullets.
if you have a fast and nimble ship you can easily fly from turd to turd, shoot them, check the chips and if they are of wanted material place the prospector and start mining. otherwise prospector limpets are quite a slow way to find materials unelss you can bring a lot you cna shoot at the same time to amke them travel and prospect while your limpets collect.

I hope multicrew gets a big buff by minign overhauling, we should be able to have a SLF able to probe the asteroids and mark them Thsi way some fatty with some SLF can check asteroids for materials, and later the big ship starts the minign process.

I haven't done any mining yet. But am interested in giving it a go. As soon as I saw the T10 I thought that will be my mining vessel. A few questions though to the old hands at mining?
1. For defence while mining I was thinking of just setting up turrets but to set them up as target only or fire at will?
2. Can you drop into any ring that says its what your seeking or only resource sites?
3. I've noticed some people have said some items are not good for refining you should just collect them. Is that true and what are they?

But any of the big three are great mining ships. I expect the Type-10 will be pretty good as well.
Also, a Python used well can hold its own against any of these.

You want a 3A prospector (so that's two active prospectors at a time)
You also want at least 4 active collector limpets per medium laser, even at the expense of cargo.
4A refinery is best, but now we can ignore fragments you can get away with smaller if that can get you more active collectors.

Only mine in pristine metallic rings. Take about 2/3 of your cargo with limpets. Ignore fragments of the cheaper ores.

This guy mines.

if your hold is more than about 200 tons it will be more than you can fill in a single play session.

This person has never tried rock mapping.

I prefer the Cutter to either the Corvette or the Anaconda for mining. Mostly it's the fact that the Cutter is the only one of the three with the bridge at the front of the ship.

Hey Limoncello, on my last mining trip with a cutter, I tried a class 5 prospector limpet controller which controls up to 4 limpets. Made looking for the next roid much easier work as you can check up to 3 other roids whilst mining the current one. For that reason on the bigger ships I would always recommend a class 5 prospector limpet controller.

With 3 spare prospector limpets you also can distinguish a barren region up ahead fairly quickly.

If you wanna find a Pristine Metallic Ring to mine in you can always try our website:
http://elitedangerous.hozbase.co.uk/pristinemetallicrings/distancefrom?system=sol&distancely=300

There's also edtools and EDDB that can supply place s to mine as well.

main reason is how boringly repetitive the mining is with the mix of pure randomness. You cannot influence the drops or go for specific drops, you always need to pew pew every potatoe to figure out whats in it.

Stop spreading this nonsense. All asteroids in this game are as persistent as stellar bodies.
But unlike stellar bodies you can return to your discovered asteroids for more cash.

Even our most reluctant rock scraper has finally given asteroid maps a go: "Mapping is a silly career and it will never take off."

1. Fire at will, that way you may actually keep on mining - if the threat isn't too large.
2. You can drop anywhere - the 20 km radius of extraction sites has higher yields though.
3. Some ores are so cheap that they probably aren't worth your time. You gotta decide the value threshold yourself though and put what you don't want to ignore via the contacts list. Also materials aren't refined at all and just collect into your inventory. They can be a bit of a hassle right now once you max out, but with the next patch you shouldn't worry about them anymore.

Cool thanks.

But still have this question.

I have used a class-5 prospector. In a slow ship, like a Type-9, it works well. A Cutter or Python are pretty quick between roids, so it's not as useful.
However, I have used a class-7 prospector to good effect when mining in asteroid clusters, as you can have an active prospector in every roid in the cluster. Otherwise, I tend to get a bit lost in a cluster.

Out of a Type 10 or a Conda which would you suggest for mining?

I vote the T10. It's become my favorite mining ship in the game and mine is now dedicated to mining. And I've mined in pretty much every ship in the game at some point that can.

The T10 has a lot going for it as a miner:

- plenty of cargo space
- plenty of internals to allow lots of limpets
- more than able to defend itself while mining
- fantastic view of the asteroid field from the cockpit
- very manueverable

The T10 just makes for a very fun mining ship, and it's become my miner of choice by a large margin.

Rep+++

Yesterday I went out to GCRV 1568.AB1 to the Haz RES (formerly Low pre-3.0) and hit up like about 4 mapped rocks in a pretty short period of time which landed me 96 Painite. Selling at the Boom system one jump over for $120 thousand a pop, that's roughly $11.5 million take. Not bad, and as I get better and finding the rocks and start running a regular route, I'm sure efficiency will increase.

Out of a Type 10 or a Conda which would you suggest for mining?

Type 10 has more cargo space and that sweet cockpit view.
Anaconda has a bigger power distributor for tearing up rocks and is more maneuverable (I think? Haven't actually flown a Type 10, only tried a Type 9)

I haven't done any mining yet. But am interested in giving it a go.

1. Get a refinery. If you are new you might want to mine a lot of stuff, if so go 4A. If you are being more picky (like me these days) you can get away with a 2A by filtering what your limpets pick up. (After shooting a rock, go to Contacts, select a fragment with something you want to ignore, and tell it to ignore that ore/mineral/material.
2. Get an A-class prospector limpet controller. Size allows you to prospect multiple rocks at once, experiment til you find your preference. I personally recommend larger in a larger ship.
3. Get size 2 (medium) mining lasers, amount depending on your power distributor. If you are going Type 10 as you indicated was preference, you can probably handle 3 lasers with pips to weapons. I run 4 on my Anaconda, some might consider that overkill though.
4. Get cargo racks for your largest 1-2 slots. Shield on one of your 2nd largest. Put collector limpet controllers everywhere else.
5. Buy limpets before you leave. Fill up your cargo 2/3 or so with limpets.
6. Go to a Pristine Metallic ringed planet. Keep in mind many planets actually have two rings, generally the one closer to the planet is the metallic one. Make sure you are in the right ring.
7. Painite is worth $120 thousand in a Boom. Platinum $50 thousand (in Boom). After that it drops off, Palladium is about $14 thousand, Osmium $13 thousand, Gold $10 thousand. Once mining missions are restored, those can be profitable as well. Osmium is usually wanted for missions, plus I think Samarium & Praseodymium maybe? Anyway, decide on how picky you want to be and set your collector filtering appropriately.
8. Shoot your prospector at a rock. It will tell you what ore/minerals and their percentages in that rock. Shoot it with your lasers, keep the prospector limpet selected and it will show how much you have left to mine. Have your collectors out and cargo bay open to collect the fragments.
9. When done, look up prices near your system to see the best place to sell.

You can start off outside of RES til you get comfortable if you like. Then if you want to increase your input go to a RES and fly around 20-15 km from the marker in a circle to avoid pirates as much as possible.

Then if you really want to increase your income, you can try your hand at mapping. CMDR CMDR VicTic/SchmicTic was kind enough to provide his database of mapped systems. (Just realize the ratings shifted with 3.0, old Haz = High, High = Low, Low = Haz.)

Good luck, CMDR.
