Technically you are not killing the player, you are destroying their ship. The pilot ejects and does mini-hyperspace to the last docked port.

A bit paranoid eh? If I see a CMDR I generally lock them, so scans are automatic. This isn't my little pony.. If you opened fire on my Clipper just for a scan I would unleash 100,000c worth of Torp's. I wouldn't be so trigger happy if I was you, at the least make sure you are insured before being so gung ho.
