Fiction I would like to see an officially curated timeline with...

This is a simple request. I know there are time lines on the various wiki pages dedicated to Elite however I would like to see Frontier create and curate an official timeline free of speculation and hearsay that comes from being created by the community. I would like to see this timeline contain references to all consumable media placed at the appropriate time slots. Such as a book taking place in 2700 being listed as '2700 - The events of the novel "Some Title Here' take place" and include the same for related games and galnet articles.

I think the addition of this would require minimal work and would be something that could drastically increase the understanding of the history of our universe which can ony serve to enhance role play. On top of this I have yet to purchase the books yet because I want to read them in order of where they appear in the timeline so I can analyze technological advances and other details, despite the fact that the books are rumored to be relatively separate from each other in terms of story.

Mods, if this is more appropriate for the Dangerous Suggestions forum, feel free to move it.

There was a timeline, but unfortunately it isn't public domain. The writers were allowed access to it during 2013/14 for the purposes of writing the novels. I'm unaware if it has been curated since however. I suspect not. I cannot post that online due to NDA restrictions I'm afraid.

The nearest thing is Dave 'Selezen' Hughes unofficial timeline here, but this is not canon (though it is similar in many respects to the official timeline I saw in 2013 > http://daftworks.co.uk/elite/index.php/Galactic_Timeline

In terms of the book the order is as follows.

3125 - The Dark Wheel (1984) - Original Elite game set in this period
3125 - Imprint (?)
3200 - Stories of life on the Frontier (1991) Frontier Elite 2 game set in this period
3250 - Further Stories of life on the Frontier (1995) Frontier First Encounters set in this period

2500-3300 Tales of the Frontier (2014) - This anthology covers multiple eras

3265 - Lave Revolution (2014) - How Lave ceased to be a dictatorship and the fall of Doctor Hans Walden
3297-3300 - Elite Reclamation (2014) - Senator Kahina Loren faces imperial intrigue in the Prism System
3300 - And Here the Wheel (2014) - The adventures of Pirate Robert Garry
3300 - Mostly Harmless (2014) - The adventures of Angel Rose in the Slough System

I believe the 3 Gollancz books are also set in 3300.

It is not really necessary to read the books in chronological order however, they are generally not related to each other and can be considered stand-alone novels.

Hope that helps!

Cheers,

Drew.

I've said in many Lave Radio podcasts, posts and discussions, the historical documents written were intended for the fiction projects.

However, I've also suggested it wouldn't take much work to rewrite the main history section (which reads a bit like one of those school history text books) into something that could go up for players.

I would be happy to do this, if Frontier want it done, but the decision on that is up to them.

Thanks Drew, I appreciate the information and list. Again I'm less interested in the chronological events of the people and more interested in the technologies present during each section of the timeline as I understand that the writers pack had that kind of information in it so it's only natural to assume certain pieces of tech may or may not be seen during certain periods of time. This information will help me with my own fan fiction moving forward.

As far as lore is concerned, with Elite without reading the books we have little to nothing to go on from before launch where Galnet articles began getting published. There doesn't seem to be a "publicly recognizable history" for which we can utilize for roleplay and fan fiction purposes. We seem to be limited to current events. Some events are public knowledge due to the fan base communicating with each other, but at the same time it seems odd that any in roleplay character would have the level of knowledge we would have as fans of the franchise out of character.

I just think that this should be addressed and made available. Eventually I would really like to see historical information available in game. So far the most we have is a few articles about the formation of the factions. These are steps in the right direction but I'd love to see more as Elite is my jam.

Now that I have a chronological list of the timeline the books are set in I think I'll finally start buying some soon so I can read them. Thanks again for the list. :)

I agree with you wholeheartedly. Probably the most 'official' repository of this will be the upcoming RPG Elite: Encounters by Dave Hughes. That will have a lot of technical detail and features timelines from long before Elite: Dangerous 'present'. I know there's a lot of material in here and it will be 'canon'.

Perhaps once that is finished we'll be able to construct a timeline and technological progress 'primer'.

Cheers,

Drew.

Fantastic. Thank you very much for sharing that tidbit Drew. Shame I can't rep you more haha. I really appreciate your care and dedication to the Elite community and helping answering questions posed from the community. It means a lot to fans like me. :)

At some point in the future there may be a chance to compile an 'Official Guide to Elite Dangerous". I wouldn't mind seeing that myself. :)

The game and lore is still quite fluid, but is beginning to firm up a little now. Happy to help out where I can, Aidan.

Cheers,

Drew.

Hey... Drew... got another project for you! Honestly... it would be nice for Frontier to offer a hard-bound Almanac. Incorporate news articles from Galnet, screenshots and other articles. I'd buy it.

I would definitely purchase an Elite Encyclopedia for a pretty penny.

Make it so! Oh... Sorry. :p

I would spend a lot of money for that...
But I dont think it will ever happen.

It seems that any type of lore or info about the inner workings of the elite universe is for devs only.
