I made it to Tanmark after meeting Kovacs earlier. That was no thanks to the Eagle pilot
[Combat rating: Expert][Legal status: Wanted] who tried to kill me before my final jump from Dakvar. He interdicted me just before I was about to jump here, and pulled me out of cruise. No warning, no demand, just a quick message telling me I was finished before he started firing his weapons.

But his skill didn't make up for the fact that I have learned how to fight, nor was it a match for my upgraded Cobra. I spaced his cockpit within a minute of his attack.

He won't be trying that again any time soon.

However, it does highlight the fact that I have upgraded everything except the hull plating, and I should get on that. It's my first job next time I put in at the Founder's World.

GalNet reports Istanu has a piracy problem. I wish I could help, but I have my own problems right now. No more news on dad yet, and I'm still waiting for a chance to holofac Kel and get her position so I can deliver her this message that Kovacs gave me earlier.

Signing off.

I'm docked at the Founder's World, and my ship has just been released following a refit of my hull plating. I'm now equipped with military composite plating. Heavier than the lightweight materials I had before, but it'll provide additional protection in the event my shields are taken off-line in combat.

GalNet has given a point of contact for the Istanu system for anyone who wants to help with the pirates. I am sending word to my local contacts as I make this log entry, as I still have other business to sort out before I can assist. For the record,
Commander Jobedy is a fellow Elite Federation of Pilots member and a contact with the Alliance Outskirt Fleet who has taken lead in the op to assist local traders against pirates. I just wish I could assist in my own way.

Mom contacted me a few hours ago. Dad has been reported as self-sufficient after they disconnected life-support following autonomous organ tests. Turns out the injuries were more extensive than I thought. He had to have his heart and lungs replaced with synthetic equivalents shipped in from out-of-system, and he won't be able to walk or pilot a ship until he can afford to replace his legs, one of his arms, and repair his lower spine, all very expensive treatments that cost more than the current value of my ship.

I did offer to sell up and use the proceeds, but mom told me that dad would never forgive himself if I did that after all the work I've put in to get where I am today, so I told mom I would send what I could from the profits of my ventures instead. She seemed reluctant, but I'm not taking any refusal.

I managed to find Kel's convoy. It's due to enter Aymiay in a few hours, so I'm headed there as soon as my flight checks are done and I can lift.

Signing off.

Supplemental - 17:58 GMT

Kel sent me a burst transmission advising me her convoy was refuelling at Lloydport, so I'm docked there at the moment. She is meeting me at this landing pad in a few minutes.

Well... Whatever it was that Kovacs wanted to tell Kel had clearly freaked her out. As soon as she pulled up the data tab and read the message he left for her, she went into fight-or-flight mode, told me she had to go straight to work on the message she got, apologised for running off, gave me a quick hand squeeze and asked me to keep an eye out for her message. And before I know it... She's disappeared, leaving me with a strange feeling of dread.

As soon as she was gone, I refuelled and took off to find some missions leaving Aymiay, took off to do some scans of Omega Andromedae, then docked here to re-configure my weapons.

I did so because while I was in Omega Andromedae, I was attacked by a pilot in a Federal Dropship named XIII
[GalNet Infopedia: Thirteen in Ancient Roman numerals].

I had no KWS to look at the pilot's record, so not only did I get no bounty for the kill, but I had no way of determining if the pilot was wanted elsewhere. All I could guess was that the pilot was either a merc for the Federal Navy, or was an enlisted Officer with them
[GalNet Infopedia: Federal Dropship requires Ensign rank or higher to purchase]. Either way... Something is wrong here, and it has either to do with what happened to my dad, or it has to do with the message I couriered for Mikhail Kovacs back in Giltine.

I'm going to have to watch my six on this one.

Hold it... I'm getting a Holofac from Kel...

Supplemental: 18:44 GMT

I'm attaching the transcript of the last message for my own personal reference later. Kel's Holofac just now showed she is upset about something, and that she has to go off-grid for a while. I also have a connection to make with her on the edge of Imperial Space, sometime after the end of this week, and before the middle of next. I'll update when I have more info.

Hello Lee, I'm sorry I ran off earlier.

Things have changed for me now, I have to stay off-grid for while.

I want to keep contact with you, so will trust you with travel data to Giltine over next few weeks. Please keep confidential and do not pass to others until you have spoken with me first.

Imperial Senators are trying to find me, and they have connections with Federation. You could find yourself under attack by well-armed opponents in Anarchy systems because of association with me and my friends. I'm sorry for this, we hardly know each other, and I have told you nothing of my activities other than escorting trade convoys... But my enemies will not know or believe this.

Attached Itinerary will give window of opportunity to meet seven days from now, but closes three days after. Please be safe, I want to see you again, and not just because of circumstance. If we both survive next ten days, I promise I will tell you everything I can about myself and my work.

Ship, stop recording and send.

I'm landed at Davies Station in Epsilon Eridani, waiting for some paperwork to go through.

The only reason I'm at this station is so I can secure a permit to enter the Van Maanen's System, as the trail of my father's would-be-killers leads there, and I can't get any more information without getting inside that system to make my own enquiries.

Trouble is, the system is controlled by an Isolationist religious group, who have established a Theocracy on this station.

People here treat me like a heathen. I expected that, of course. To any fundamentalist group, any outsider is a heathen, and anyone who does not profess to follow their beliefs is an outsider and always will be... At least until they profess some sort of conversion.

However, even though outsiders are not well tolerated, they are still needed, as those who follow the religion of the Van Maanen's isolationist religion don't travel outside the system much, and those few that do, would never bother themselves with frivolous distractions, nor sully their hands with trivialities such as the logistics of importing foodstuffs and exporting minerals. All of that is sub-contracted out to others, which is why this station exists in the manner that it does.

So here I am, waiting for a contract to come up where I can get a permit to enter the system so I can do some more digging. It's a long shot, but maybe I can get the answers I need.

I wish Kel were here. Her off-grid activities means she can only jump once a day, and she has to cover her tracks each time she enters a new system. Still, I'll get to see her in a week.

Prior to my arrival here, I secured enough goodwill with Pippin Dock to be considered friendly, including certain preferential treatment such as discounts on the market. A few missions for Federation-friendly subsidiary organisations has secured a mission to deliver highly-sensitive documents to Onufrienko Terminal in Urvantji. Completing the mission got me a change in rank to the non-commissioned status of Midshipman.

At least I'm not a cadet any more.

For the purposes of file size and reporting brevity, I'm enabling silent encoding all future log entries to Level 2, just in case I am boarded or they are somehow copied off of Black Box data storage.

The work situation with the Sublime Van Maanen's Star faction is dead in Epsilon Eridani, but I took a courier mission to Clement Orbital
[YZ Ceti]. There were a few missions there to Il Aquarii, one of which was for SVMS, so I took it, and departed. The journey went as expected.

Some imposter tried to take credit for exploration data collected by Kamzel, Commander of the DSS Beagle
[Last known location: Beyond the Scutum-Centaurus arm, coordinates unknown] but appears to have been rumbled thanks to Commander Kamzel's support team reporting his last known coordinates and a message stating the Beagle had been damaged. Looks like the imposter intercepted the message and tried to pass himself off as Kamzel in an attempt to defraud UC of millions of credits.

I'm not surprised by this. Some people out there will try to capitalise on just about anything.

No news on dad so far. I hope there's more soon. I'm climbing the walls here, and I can't even hit the bars to let off steam. I might need to get out of here at a moment's notice on any info I get, so I can't be out of it... Not even slightly.

I'll update again later today.

Ship Location: In transit to Delta Phoenicis

I'm dictating this as I transit from Durius to Delta Phoenicis. I decided to take the trip to Imperial Space early so that I could get in touch with Kel next week. I'm also looking to do a few mercenary missions for the Empire, in the hope I can get enough rank and reputation to buy an Imperial Clipper.

While I'm still working for the Federation to get more information on what happened to dad, I've found that the specs of the Imperial Clipper are impressive, and one can never have access to too many ships.

While I wait for my drive to cool down and charge for my next jump, I'm scooping fuel from each star, then flying out. I hope that the reduced strain on my FSD will save on repairs down the line, as I might be flying this Cobra for a while to come.

On other news, it seems that there could be a firmware update for the galactic navigation interface in my cockpit soon. It will allow me to plot courses up to a thousand light-years distance. This is obviously going to be great news for long-haul travelers, couriers, freight merchants and anyone who needs to get from one area to a farther area quickly, though it is of little use when exploring or bounty-hunting, two things I'm going to be involved with soon.

Before I make jump to Smethells 155, I've flown some ten thousand light-seconds out from the system's primary. My canopy is now able to dial back the polarity enough that I can make out the cosmic background, and what a sight it is. There are thousands of stars in my field of view, and the visual enhancer is showing me three separate nebulae.

I'd love to travel to the Horsehead soon... Maybe also explore Orion's belt and the surrounding region. Either way, I'm putting a stellar nursery on my list.

I hope I can find someone to join me on my trip... Maybe Kel would be up for it, if she isn't dealing with other issues in the meantime.

Anyway, I'd better close this entry. It's time to jump.

Kel sent me a holofac while I was docked at Delta Phoenicis Trading Post after a commodities run, so I've diverted here to meet her as she comes in. It coincides neatly with some Imperial missions I have been doing for various corporations allied with the Duval dynasty [REF: Intention to purchase Imperial Clipper for future mission contingencies].

I'll be waiting for her on Pad 4 once her ship is due to dock. She's coming in on an Orca, though how she got the credits to book passage on one of those is anyone's guess. Even independent pilots with Vipers couldn't afford a ticket on one of those.

I'll update once I know more. I must say I'm a little nervous though.

Supplemental - 09:15 GMT

Looks like things are a hell of a mess for Kel. She told me what was going on as soon as we reached an out-of-the-way lounge on the station.

She's kept her real name secret, even from me, but she is an agent working for the Alliance in Imperial and Federal space. Her cover had been compromised before she and I had ever met, though she was not aware of it until I had given her the message from Kovacs during my last trip to the Giltine sytem. It seems as though the Federation had been investigating her trips through the core systems sector as part of an undercover sting regarding the transit of Onionhead when it was being cultivated in the Kappa Fornacis system. Her involvement in the transit of the narcotic was, on the surface, a drug runner from there to several Federation systems as a drug mule. In reality, she had been transmitting details of the operation to Alliance Headquarters in Alioth as part of a much larger operation to discover a perpetrator of an organised crime ring responsible for the attacks and murders of several dignitaries among the member worlds of the Alliance.

The Federation seemed not to care that she had an investigation taking place, despite communiques to them from Alliance Intelligence and the Alliance Embassy on Mars. The only thing they seem to care about is that they got those responsible for selling a narcotic that they have declared as illegal, even if it compromises an intelligence operation undertaken by another major galactic power.

Now I'm wondering if the Federation is spoiling for a war with the Alliance, knowing that they cannot win against the Empire. At first, I was skeptical, maybe even scornful, of her story. I explained why this was, how someone in covert ops for any agency would never disclose their mission to outsiders, how no-one in intelligence would ever brag about being an agent for any of the powers.

To say she was outraged would be an understatement. She confirmed that my suspicions that most agents would not compromise their cover identity the way she had, but she had gotten into real trouble now that her cover had been compromised without her even realising it for so many weeks.

Now, I'm inclined to believe Kel's story, especially after she showed me documentation she should not have possessed on the Federation, the command codes she had for access to several classified Federation security systems, and the data she showed to me in several Imperial databases regarding past operations that have not yet been disclosed to the public...

Operations involving the Thargoids going back as far as 60 years.

None of that is what she is directly involved in, but she has access to that information via her clearance codes within the Alliance. The question is, why would she trust me with this information? I'm just an independent pilot flying for myself. I don't even have a respectable combat rating. When I asked her this, she told me she trusted me because I had a trustworthy face.

Whatever that means. I'm sure there's more to it than that, but hell if I know what that is.

Her plan involves getting to Giltine and making contact with Mikhail Kovacs again, and then requesting extraction to a safe zone. If she goes through with that plan, I'll most likely never hear from her again. I don't know exactly why, but it seems to be how these things work in covert ops.

Still, it was good to catch up with her again. Her raven-black hair, her intense gaze, the curve of her mouth when she smiles, although that seldom happens these days. Today was the first time I saw her in a flight suit. It's not something a passenger needs to wear on an Orca given its opulence, but it's also relatively new. Maybe it's part of her cover, but it looks good on her.

She has booked passage on a tramp liner to Vequess tomorrow morning, but has suggested we spend some time together today and tonight. I have no desire to deny her suggestion, even if I have my reservations about everything she's told me so far.

GalNet has little worth noting. Some expansionistic movements in some systems somewhere, Federation president Halsey ordering a revitalisation program in Kappa Fornacis, and that's about it. The cynic in me thinks that Halsey is just trying to save face in this situation, much like the presidents of old Earth before the third world war.

Nothing else news-worthy has come to my attention recently. I'll update once Kel departs for Vequess.

Well, I'm in it now.

I've just found out that my dad was targeted by a self-styled militia as retaliation for my association with Kel. Seems as though my meeting with her in the Giltine system was construed as some sort of involvement with her activities in Federation space. In retaliation, a mercenary group was hired to do some serious damage to my dad, possibly with the intention of killing him.

This information came to me from a data sliver given to me by Kel earlier this morning, just as she was giving me her farewell.

Oh god...
[AUTO-SIGN-OFF]

Supplemental - 06:20 GMT

I had to stop for a while. This whole situation has made me sick to my stomach.

Literally.

I've just taken a hormone stabiliser to calm my nervous system down and bring it back to chemical equilibrium. I don't want to be throwing up in the cockpit while in microgravity, it's bad enough when it's hangar-level gravity.

Well, I'm at a loss what to do next. Kel gave me a warning of the danger I'm likely to face now, and the danger my family faces if they remain in Federation space. I've got to get to them soon to warn them, and with that in mind, I've burned up all my fuel trying to get to their last known location to get them the warning so they can get out. I dare not transmit anything over any comms systems right now.

I'm refuelling my ship for the next jump, then I'll dock with their trader vessel, and give them the warning. Mom will need to find a way to get dad out of his hospital and into their ship without anyone knowing until they are clear of Federation jurisdiction, and I'm hoping they'll take off to Alliance space.

Kel also told me that there's a good chance that either one of us would end up dead in the next few days unless we were very careful. I can tell she's afraid, even though she is doing her best to hide it from me. We spent most of the night in the pad tower watching over my Cobra, relaxing as much as possible given our circumstances. She has told me everything she could about what had happened to my family since that attack, and she has given me vital information about what could happen next... Information I'm going to give to my folks as soon as I see them face to face.

Kel surprised me further today as well. She told me that she's not as young as she looks, that she has been taking supplements that decelerate the ageing process. How exactly this works is beyond my understanding, though she did try to explain... Something about slowing telomere breakage... I don't get it myself, that's more for genetics experts.

She's in her mid thirties compared to my early twenties, which would go a long way to explaining why she seems so self-assured, with more poise and intelligent reasoning than anyone else I would have expected of someone my own age. Indeed, the only reason I can even keep up is because I take measures to control my hormone levels with regular medication administered through my flight suit. It's a fringe benefit of having combat stabilisers for when I need them.

Still... Our parting was rough. I didn't want her to go, and I could see she didn't want to leave either. She stayed with me in the lounge right up to the call for her ship to depart, and then we stayed side-by-side right up until they threatened to take off without her.

There's definitely something between us.

I hope she survives... I hope I survive, and I hope we see each other again in the future.

It feels empty somehow, knowing I'm not going to see her again, not knowing how long that will last.

For now, I have to make sure my family is OK, and that I can be prepared for anything that comes my way.

Signing off.

[OOC] Note:There is unlikely to be any entries for this thread until the 1.1 release goes public. That's because I'm testing the 1.1 beta at the moment and I'm not playing the current release, so there's nothing to base my entries on. My ship was in the hangar for a week while I try to get my head clear. After last week's business with Kel, my dad and the Federation, I needed to let off steam. A few bars, a few drinks, a walk around the station, whatever I could do that wasn't dealing with my problems, all was on the table.

Today was the first time I stepped back on to my ship even though nothing needed that amount of time on it. I come back to find that the firmware for the galactic navigation system has been updated and I can route-find journeys up to 1000 light years radius. The update also adjusts some of my weapon systems to control heat saturation, although I don't have experience with heat damage.

GalNet had some news over the last week, too. Ngaliba was subject to a plague of some sort, and the problem was offset significantly by the work of pilots from all over the cluster. Pilots from Federation, Imperial, Alliance and Independent space took part in delivering aid to the region. No doubt this prevented more severe illness from occurring among the population.

Some Imperial Senator tried to go to Sol. Pretty ballsy, given how the Empire and Federation don't like each other all that much. Her name rings a bell, too. Something to do with the Prism system.
[INFO REQUEST REDACTED] Ah... Loren. That's what it was. [GALNET REF: Lady Kahina Tijani Loren, Prism, Imperial space]

I gotta say, I like her gall! "I don't like to be late"!

Anyway, I need to get this ship out there to do some testing. After that, I plan to go to HIP 101110 to help out with the construction efforts for a new station. It might help me to get my head clear until I can find more leads regarding my dad.

Four days of ferrying metal ores to Yembo with a Type-6 Cargo ship has literally bored me to sleep. I woke up this morning and decided I couldn't do it anymore, and needed to do something different.

Thankfully, my contribution was sufficient to gain a bonus from the project, and there are three days remaining.

I've just spent the last few hours travelling from Yembo to Banki for a support mission for the Federation. No need to let them know I'm only doing it to get my ranking for that Dropship yet, although it may not be necessary if the Fer De Lance I've seen advertised in the last few days is a decent combat ship. I might just get one of those instead.

At least I don't have to get into combat... At least that's what the news item on GalNet says. There are logistics missions for "conscientious objectors", and they seem like an ideal choice. The only targets I want to deal with are pirates and enemy combatants who are actually endangering civilians.

Hopefully I'll have more concrete news once my ship comes in for docking.

Somehow, I managed to jump rank in the Exploration ratings to Surveyor. Maybe it was the last set of data I turned in while travelling around Yembo.

Nine days since my last update.

I managed to contribute to the Banki and Yembo missions. For now, the Federation are going to hold on to Banki, and the materials that were dropped off with Yembo have been re-provisioned and are now being used to build the station up from the Ocellus module that they've sent out.

I'm going to set a course for it soon, just as soon as I have acquired an Asp Explorer.

Dad was recently released from medical care with some replacement parts of his own. He now has a pair of bio-synthetic legs, a synthetic arm, a bio-synthetic heart and a bio-synthetic lung. How he came to have the money for this is anyone's guess. Mom isn't talking about it.

The upside to it all is that he is now capable of getting back into a spaceship and flying it again.

And that's what I've been doing the last week. I put my ship in for repairs at Dalton Gateway
[LHS 3447] while I went to see him. He seems to be doing well with his adjustments, although I'm sure the transition between organic and synthetic is a little jarring beneath his clothing.

I received a coded message from an unidentified source while I was travelling back here. I haven't been able to decode it yet, but I suspect whoever sent it will be looking to send me a decryption key soon.

I hope so. I don't like carrying data that I can't access without a good reason.

For now, I'm waiting for some maintenance to complete on my engines, and then I'll get back out to earn the credits I need for a newer ship.

[OOC Note]I'm going to stay away from this Cmdr's Log for a little while, mainly because I haven't had the desire to play ED in its' current state (mainly because of external circumstances, partly to do with the game's current state).
