ID Naming convention

I have searched the interweb and forum search to no avail, so hopefully some of you knowledgeable types may be able to help.

The NPCs we see flying around have ship IDs like UN-12F and YU-3C. What is the naming convention used - are they completely random, or do the alpha numeric codes have a meaning. I am not asking about Commander IDs, just NPCs.

Thanks in advance

Well, as you may know, the naming convention for human ships is the first couple of letters of the commanders name plus numbers I'm not quite sure about. So it might be the name of the AI plus ....

Not sure how it works with NPCs but if you stick an ID on your own ship without overriding it will be the first two letters of your CMDR name and then what seems most likely a random number and the first letter in the ship type at the end.

So if you are CMDR JT442 and flying a Cobra you might have JT-01C for example.

Which is why I'm asking about NPCs... the commander name usually has nothing in common with the ID. So what is the NPC ID naming convention?...

Oh right I see. Well I doubt they bothered to make a completely different naming convention so odds are it's just random; or Pseudo random. In other words you might see an NPC with the same ID again but that doesn't mean it is following a naming convention, just that it is using the same seed to generate the ID (because the game relies heavily on Procedural generation .

Haven't really considered it. Have you noticed if the ship is tagging with the NPC pilot names as per PC pilots? Seems that'd be an easy method but I have no science behind this theory as yet.

I would bet there is some convention to it. Everything is generated so it makes sense. FD does not have a history of cataloging data for us Commanders. With few exceptions all of the theory crafting on any subject in E|D is done by the players. Even the famous Coriolis ship builder site is player created.

A genuine interest might spark a discovery. See what you can deduce with some study.

I have to ask... where is you profile picture from.... It looks a bit like the Dreamscape 10 flyer. Every time I see it I wonder about it?

It's the spaceship of the stoner aliens from the 1981 SF animated movie Heavy Metal.

You wouldn't believe how much faffing around I did while developing an ident system for my own ships.

In the end, I nicked part of it from the USAF., so...

AV = "attack vessel" = Military/Reflective hull
UV = "utility vessel" = Reinforced alloy hull.
CV = "cargo vessel" = Light alloy hull.
PV = "passenger vessel" = as above.
MV = "mining vessel" = as above.
XV = "exploration vessel" = as above.

Then the maximum jump range, followed by the pad size.

So, for example, my Exploration Asp has the ident "XV-50M" while my Vulture has the ident "AV-17S"

I realise this means that totally different ships can end up with very similar idents but it proves quite handy to remind you of a ship's role/capabilities if you haven't flown it for months.

Now, if you'll excuse me, I have to go and iron all my shoelaces and arrange all my pencils by length. [where is it]

Though I actually posted a giant irrelevant video in here myself >___> , Ima try to re-rail the topic back to determining the method by which NPC ships are designated, either by some type of system or randomly.

Amazing.... btw, did you leave the Iron on? Are you sure you didn't? ....

I generally use a contraction of my home system-Giryampi. The only exception is my asp which is currently at Merope and running with THARG1....think they might notice?

This is a good question, that a Dev could answer with authority and would help our lore.
Sandro?
Ed Lewis?
Brett C?
uh the new community contact (sorry having a blank at the moment)

The player default SHIP ID is: First two letters of cmdr name - date of ship purchase (08 for today) last letter is ship model (A for asp, O for Orca, etc.)

And it would be nice if traffic control referred to us by that ID.
Thought that's what was going to be used now.
