If You Could Go Back in Time...

It's almost funny how South American pack is on almost everyone's list. I'm not saying it was bad pack, but comparatively it's luster has definitely faded after nearly two years.
I mean the only really good pieces we got from it were the wooden beams (which we have in abundance anyway), the thatch roofs (of which we also have a base game set), and the bamboo wall pieces. The temple pieces you can take or leave and even at launch the prevailing opinion was that the decorative items and benches/bins/etc were all way too themed. I woud have made the SA pack an animal pack too, since the prevailing opinion at launch was ALSO that they did one of the most biodiverse continents on the planet dirty with only four animals. Capybara and Maned Wolf are givens to me in this scenaro, but not sure about the last one. Maybe a tamandua or armadillo for something unique to anything else we have.

If I had to choose a second one it'd be the Arctic Pack. I only ever use the wood floor for barns and sometimes the roof, but all the Christmas and ice/snow stuff is useless to me. We should've gotten the Arctic fox back then, and I think I'd pick Musk Ox, Willow Ptarmigan and/or (depending on if you count the fox) Snowshoe Hare, and Wood Frog to add to the roster.

I think it’s a tough balance between how good the scenery was vs. how much additional animals from the region are needed / wanted. I.e. (IMO) the arctic pack had the least worthwhile scenery so far, but we don’t really need many more arctic species. On the other hand, Australia had great build pieces but the regionalso badly needs more animals. South America keeps popping up because, although it had some great build pieces (e.g. bamboo), there weren’t all that many compared to some other packs and South America has some iconic species that many still want added to the game (e.g. capybara, various monkeys).

Although I would miss the Arctic wood, I would change the Arctic pack into an animal pack adding the following animals:

-wolverine
-muskox
-Arctic fox (the raccoon would take over its place in the North America animal pack)

Then I would change the South America pack into an animal pack adding these:

-Capybara
-Coati
-Armadillo

I use scenery from every pack, but I guess I'd go with aquatic, just because its theme has a weaker identity, and South America (though in all honesty I still feel like the faux rocks, temple pieces, and foliage are essential).

South America Animal Pack:
  • Jaguar
  • Llama Vicuña
  • Giant Anteater
  • Colombian White-Faced Capuchin Monkey
  • Maned Wolf
  • Hoffman's Two-Toed Sloth
  • South American Coati (sorry, White-Nosed Coati, but this is a South America pack)
  • Red-Eyed Tree Frog
Aquatic Animal Pack:
  • Grey Seal
  • Cuvier's Dwarf Caiman
  • King Penguin
  • Giant Otter
  • North American Beaver
  • Capybara
  • California Sea Lion
  • Diamondback Terrapin
BONUS: Making up Slots in the NA Pack:
  • North American River Otter
  • Caribbean Flamingo/American White Ibis/Roseate Spoonbill/Brown Pelican (Honestly, any bird would be a great addition here)

Wanted to make a separate thread about 'which DLC would you change', when I found this one. I wouldn't only switch some older packs to animal packs, but also vice-versa:

Arctic Pack: Indifferent. The scenery isn't my favourite theme, but the wood texture looks great. I do think adding a musk ox and wolverine would be great but neither are species I'm very likely to use.

South America Pack: Change the format: This is the continent that is most lacking in my opinion. Also, the theme is so-so. The grid stone pieces aren't great and the wood pieces are nice but not necessary. Bamboo and rubble pieces are truly amazing, but I'd add them to the Southeast Asia theme (see below). Instead, this pack would've been upgraded with a rhea, maned wolf, and South-American coati.

Australia Pack: Change the format: I'm in doubt about the theme here. The grid wood pieces are pretty but rarely useful. The aboriginal theme is necessary but only contains few pieces that could've also come in an animal pack as signs. While I personally don't need many Australian species, I know many want more, so the pack could've been upgraded with a wombat, black swan and Tasmanian devil.

Aquatic Pack: Perfect as it is.

Southeast Asia Pack: Change the format: As much as I love Southeast Asian species, a theme is still very much lacking. In addition to the bamboo and rubble pieces from South America, it should contain a good lava stone building set and decoration pieces for temples. It's a shame to sacrifice some species, but we got the most important ones (siamang and otter) in future DLCs anyway. I'd exchange the dhole, tapir and even the binturong or proboscis monkey (the latter two are tough) for a Southeast Asian theme.

Africa Pack: Change the format: As much as I love the pieces of this pack, it all feels out of place being a mostly South African pack with a North African theme. I'd have preferred a pack with more species (Africa needs antelopes) and save the pieces for a future Middle East or Desert pack if we ever get one. I think the pack could use a greater kudu, honey badger and Hamadryas baboon.

North America Pack: Perfect as it is.

Europe Pack: Keep it as it is. While I didn't think a European theme was necessary, the pieces are truly amazing, especially the grid stone walls. I also don't think there is such a need for three more species in this pack.

Wetlands Pack: Keep it as it is. A Wetlands building theme doesn't make sense.

Conservation Pack: Perfect as it is.

I would agree 100%, besides what animal get cutted for SEA. Call me crazy, but i would without a doubt delete both the sunbear and clouded leopard instantly from the pack, while the proboscis monkey and tapir can fight over relevance. The babirusa, binturong and dhole were three very neccessary support animals for the allready overcrowded with highlights Asia that their loss would really hurt. Imo, if the clouded leopard and sunbear wouldnt be in the game, it would be hardly noticable while building, as both of their niches are allready coverd (formosan black bear and bengal tiger) or would be coverd even better (fishing cat) by other animals. A completly support oriented pack of fishing cat, binturong, dhole and babirusa might not lock as appealing on first glance, but would have been much healthier to the game.
Hopefully we will still get an expanded asia theme in the future, but i wouldnt sack the desperatly needed supporting species for them.
