If you haven't used shock mines...

My mate just text me to chat about Elite, I told him about my current weird Cobra Mk.IV setup (2 medium pulse lasers, a rocket pod for bigger ships a seeker rack for small ships and ship fighters, and a mine launcher for angry retreats). He asked me what shock mines were like as he had never used them and it got me thinking... I bet my pals on the forum may not have tried them out yet either. So if you were wondering...

I tried them on myself before and told my mate "they fudge you up so bad you think the game has crashed" - I think that's an apt description.

My multi-crew vessel is gonna be a Keelback with a couple of beam turrets up top and a couple of shock mine launchers below. You'll have a hard time following that ship, should add a nice bit of tension for both CMDRs as we dodge laser fire and all sorts of incoming from whatever ship has taken us by surprise.

Ok that's my random post of the evening thanks for stopping by :)

This, Sir, is a very useful post indeed! :D

Always wondered what they were like and if they were even any good. Will definitely be having a experiment with them soon (not this weekend as I'm off to a bike rally) :D

They knock a ship of course slightly like force shell effect on cannons, the effect from hitting just one mine isn't going to set the world on fire, but if you can dump a whole cluster in one spot and convince someone to drive through them, the results can be.. entertaining :)

I dropped two under my Adder and it pretty much went on holiday.

Off topic but I don't even care what the rules are on that because it involves bikes...

Bike rally? Classics?? :D

Er blah blah blah Elite etc etc

I've dropped the shockmines long ago because they have nearly 0 effect on heavy medium or on large ships. If a gunship pirate or the classic annie follows you, they are useless. I made a gunship eat 5 of the shockmines from my trade python and it looked like Arnold Schwarzenegger after taking a face punch, just angry :D but nothing else happened.

They have a niche where you want to tag a ship while damaging it as little as possible. To temp disable fsd for example.

Hmm that's a shame but good to know. Have they been updated since or do you reckon that will still be the case?

It's a matter of bulk, same as with force shell cannon. You can make a sidey spin cartwheels, but a big tub will barely blink. Unless you leave a big pile of them in one spot maybe.

That's a shame it seems like too much of a compromise. I mean they are a defensive munition unless you're creative (like 'marking' enemy positions with white phosphorus etc :) )

I used to outfit my T9 with a combination of shock mines and regular mines. If I lose an interdiction, I just start crapping these things out until my FSD is back online. NPCs used to be pretty dumb about flying straight into them but now the lighter ships will attempt to avoid them. I found that putting them in a serpentine pattern is the best at hitting smaller ships. Bigger ships tend to just take the hits, which is why I mix in the regular mines. Once I had my mine loadout on the T9 I was able to get her only Deadly Anaconda kill. Crazy combination of hitting enough shock mines to keep the plasma off of me, no PDT on the Annie, and heavy mines doing the bulk of the work.

Submit and look sheepish

There are so many things I have not tried out yet and this is one of them.
Sounds very cool.
