General / Off-Topic If you liked it then you should have put a Rep on it

I tend to rep posts I find funny. I occasionally rep posts I find insightful. I almost never use negative rep; I prefer to encourage rather than discourage. I find the rep systems insistence that I share the love understandable but sometimes it is a little annoying. I don't always rep when perhaps I should but I think it is a useful part of the forum.

Anyone else have an opinion worth sharing?

Edit: just noticed I missed out a word in the title. Can a passing mod fix it?

Being a grumpy old git these days, I don't often agree enough with posts to rep. Personality of posts as well as content are what guides me. As a result of my personality however, I end up generally liking a few people. Not that I intentionally just rep these folks, just the way it seems to work out.

Spreading the love, is like saying "go out and make more friends" pfffft.

I'd have repped you but I have to pass it around a bit...:D

How do you want the title changed?

I think the whole rep system is a bit pointless. But knowing this forum I'll probably get repped for saying that :-/

If you like a post then respond with a "hear hear, me hearty" or similar.

I didn't know there was negative rep! What's the point of that?

Perhaps for posts that actively and deliberately detract from the topic? :S

Title changed.

It's a more passive way of approving what someone has posted when you don't feel like you can add to the thread but like the post.

Thats the way I like to use it anyway. :D

And rep will discourage that? Seems a little unlikely. Rep isn't public, and even on your own profile you can only see the last 5 reps.

Yarp, tis a bit silly isn't it. I never really pay any attention to rep, length of time on the forum, or post count. Plenty of people have lots to say, not all are worth listening too. However from these people comes often wisdom too. Forums are odd places really.;)

I rep comments that I find funny, that provide a particularly insightful comment, that explain something in a way I can understand or that link something interesting. Don't really use negative rep. I also find the rep system strange because if someone happens to put a couple of really good posts in you can only rep 1 before sharing the rep around.

I'd say this thread could be more useful in the forum suggestions section?

The "Thanks" system I've seen used on other forums (e.g. XDA Developers) is much better for this as each post will have a number of people who've "thanked" it. Obviously you'd change "thanks" to "Agree" or "+1" or the like, but it actually lets people see a quantitative response to an individual post, rather than the invisible (to everyone bar the recipient) rep system.

I've noticed that most rep I've received has been for jokey posts... which I find a little odd. Yeah, humour is great 'n' all, but I consider information, ideas, suggestions, all much more important here. That's what I tend to rep people for anyway.

I think I've only ever been repped once as a "thank you" for digging out information and providing links, etc... which I kind of thought might happen more... people are just so rude! :p ;)

He's the TJ, I'm the repper.

Geddit? Huh?

Nevermind.

 :D

I know how you feel, I only get rep for the lighthearted stuff.

Which to be fair is pretty much all I post unless I'm appealing for calm.

But, I know the type of forum system that allows posters to thank another for their post and their name appears at the bottom of the post. it's a good way to do it.

A while back it was discussed about changing the forum style i.e away from VBulletin. but with everything thats going on I doubt that will happen just yet.
