If your game is sharper and you don't like it...

...It is because the default option with Update 5 is that upscaling mode is set to AMD. Reverting it back to normal disables the new sharpening effect.

For the record:
  • If you select AMD for upscaling, the sharpening effect is always active, even if you don't use any upscaling
  • There appears to be no FPS difference between normal and AMD
  • Setting it to normal appears to be the "old" way

When I had the graphics preset set to Low, turning off this option did not disable the sharpening for me. Could you be so kind to confirm?

I just tried this for you but for me it works. When I switch it to normal it is less sharp than when I set it to AMD.

There might be something wrong with me but I like the sharper look.
And the lighting is definitely going in the right direction.

First time since Odyssey launched I could put gamma back to default and use my normal screen settings (until now I had to switch to a different profile of my screen to be able to see anything in Odyssey).

Thanks for testing, I might just delete my graphics settings (for the third time now since launch) to be sure. Not really sure why this option was enabled by default anyway.

There's nothing wrong there -- There's quite a few people out there that like a bit of extra sharpening to their games. I run a bit of extra sharpening on a bunch of games.

I... Wouldn't say it is a good idea to set it as the new default, though :D

Everybody's screenshots are going to look over sharpened now because it is the new default setting! Say bye to the typical Elite Horizons beautiful screenshots!

You are not alone - I actually find it much much better on my hardware (which is AMD hardware fwiw). The 'normal' setting feels like Vaseline is smeared on the screen or my eye prescription is just a little off.

Oh, thanks! I'll have to check that. I was quite disappointed yesterday when I thought I'll have to live with this for the next 6-9 months.

Still weird that that would be the new default. I have an Nvidia GPU.

I do believe AMD has been trying to make their new stuff GPU agnostic. I guess AMD wants to show NVIDIA that they can offer improvements over what they are offering while not caring what hardware people use.

I think the idea with the AMD sharpening is to drop the super sampling a notch to increase FPS and the sharpening will make the letters still readable.

That's exactly what I do. I have supersampling to 0.75 below 4K resolution. AMD sharpening makes everything a bit sharper again. Another thing that bothers about fonts is the bloom effect. As a result, fonts look more washed out again.Bloom should be disabled for fonts.
