Okay new theory, new rant. Please don't get mad, I do want to step on your toes but only ever so lightly
Elite Dangerous could be
the MMO for introverts. Introvert doesn't mean they don't want to be social or don't want to play online, they just don't want to be part of a clan. They want to meet other players, have fun and meaningful encounters, chat with them. Introverts just don't get off on being part of a bunch of testosterone locked meatheads. They dislike "guild drama" but are often the cause of it. They can live with single player only, but they'd welcome MMO gameplay - as long as it's the equivalent of old farts sitting in an exclusive 18th century gentlemans club
But is this mutually exclusive? I don't think so. Why should it? The universe is a big place.
I have the feeling that the current backers in the forum want to "lock down" the game from
ever straying off this idea of the lone wolf traveling among the stars. They are willing to vote down social features to keep "those sniveling kiddies" out of their community. Beware the slippery slope! They are exclusive, they want the ivory tower to shut out every modern influence, they adopt the wrong meaning of the word "Elite": A privileged group of people who stand above the crowds, special because they where there when gaming wasn't mainstream yet. A faithful recreation of Elite. The hippies have gone conservative. The only thing left would be if they complain that the new music the kids are listening to is trash. Oh wait, you guys just did that hehe. Poor justin, all he ever wanted is to sing!
But that is the wrong tactic, and you cannot wonder why SC got unlimited cash and ED doesn't. "Space sim fans will flock to ED on release". Balderdash! Space sim fans already flocked to SC, you have the hard numbers! SC is winning the marketing and PR game. It doesn't matter that it's "just talk", it's a fact.
David Braben is doing his own thing, creating the game he wants to play, and I have all the confidence he and the FD team will stay true to the principles that we all love about Elite as a game. But the old audience of Elite / FE2 / FFE just won't be enough to develop ED into the game we all want through the expansions.
Why don't they cater to a larger audience? Things like good guild support is planned for an expansion, and groups of players will have larger influence on the evolving universe. This was said by FD, but it's kept on the down low. Why? Peer pressure? How ironic!
Maybe FD is just focusing on developing the best game they can. But lack of dedicated PR is diminishing ED's potential.
For example, FD hasn't talked much about how multiplayer missions will work. ED could potentially be VASTLY superior to all previous MMOs in this regard, always new interesting things to do for guilds or friends instead of the same instances and raids over and over. Maybe even story arcs and campaigns that are specific to each guild! The WoW crowd would love that. Procedural missions and story has potential that IMHO should be talked about more. I know it's a tough sell. But all those WoW players are looking for something new instead of the same old. ED only would have to cater a little bit more to them in order to capture this audience.
Why not talk more about the different cultures that inhabit and get simulated in the eliteverse? Their quirks, characteristics and effects on the evolving universe. That is a story that that journalists outside the gaming press might be able to sell, a game that simulates the battle of ideas, the clash of societies that are religious, atheist, rich or poor, democratic or corrupt, oppressive or free. Can there ever be peace? And who cares if it's gonna be in the first release, just talk. Talk is cheap.
Why not model some cute furry pets you can keep in your cockpit? Put some renderings out there. And will there be romance in ED? Why is almost every robust healthy boy with a robust healthy soul in him, at some time or other crazy to go to sea?
