I'm a complete dim-wit. How do I go about using EDDiscovery?

I simply don't know.

It is the tool that tracks where you've been, right?

Ouch, thread is pretty outdated though. Basically:

Install.
In Settings, add your Cmdr.
I'm not sure if you still need to manually point to soft to the location of the logs, though. One used to.
If you have an account on EDSM and want to link EDD to EDSM, follow instructions (get an API key, paste it in Settings, etc.)
Set up Screenshots to have it convert your screenies if you want.
The rest happens in History.

Better set it up and do a few jumps to make sure it got the logs location right.

Use the maps for info and stuff (careful, the 3D map can be long to open); use the Export tab to export your scans in .csv, etc.

If you need further help, find the EDD discord server in Help.

EDIT: thread is old, don't pay attention to 'verbose logging' etc.

Pretty much this.

Make the effort to set up EDSM. It's very helpful, and EDDsicovery and EDSM work together perfectly.

This is the wonderful advice iain666 sent me on this very matter (I hope he does not mind me putting it here):

Step 1 - download EDDiscovery.exe and run it to install EDD. Windows may tell you that it doesn't know who we are, but it is safe. Your anti-virus may also give a false positive, I've contacted a couple of them to try and get them to help with that but they're not forthcoming. It is safe though.

Step 2 - start it up, if you're running under the same user you play ED as then it should pick up the journals that have been created since 2.2 and populate your history since that point. It will get your commander name from the journals (this may take a while, it will create a local copy of the EDSM data, so it's downloading and processing nearly 6 million systems on the first go)

Step 3 - go to EDSM.net and register on there. Once you've done that get your API Key (it's in one of the menu options, under the drop down with the little head on the right). Paste that into EDD on the settings tab.

I followed this and that is pretty much all you need to get you up and running I found, and was a brief idiots guide like wot I required :D

I can't get the map working like I used to; in fairness, I haven't tinkered with it in a while. I might need to reinistall it or read up on it again, and that will come.

I will be 'soon' making a long journey to remote areas where exploring hasn't taken place, way off the beaten track, as much off the beaten track as possible - when I consistently have the time (the reason for my withdrawal from the CCC). This excites the antisocial side of me no end. The map was incredibly useful for preliminary attempts at finding these areas, and planning ahead (I've lost that info now). It's great the way the program links with the website. Once again, full respect to those who created it.
