I find it really odd that this extreme divisiveness in the community seems to occur fairly frequently. The previous major contention was AI difficulty. I understand there are large segments that want ED to take a particular path that suits them which often seems to be diametrically opposed, but the commonality is all groups love playing ED and wants it to do well.
I get that a lot of these conflicts generally seem to boil down to casuals Vs hardcore real space simers. But what I don't get is the lack of a real sense of community. There is a lot of us versus them leading to FD to make decisions that results in winners and losers, which leaves a certain amount of bitterness that appears to accrue in the community.
These different groups have always been in MMOs so there is nothing new there, but the level of divisiveness here is the most extreme I've encountered. So the casuals won the last battle on AI difficulty, and now it looks like the real space sim guys will win the transfer delays battle. But in all of this very few people suggest a compromise, instead preferring either death or glory. The thing is both sides have valid and legitimate reasons, so this isn't about the right or wrong.
I find the level of conflict resolution to be very poor here despite the ED crowd probably having a larger than normal older (and presumably wiser) player base. It is only a matter of time before this gets out of hand, and a pattern is already starting to emerge. Not every conflict is easy to resolve, but at least try.
How about people try and show so empathy towards people who don't hold there view and seek to propose compromises/solutions where possible. Both AI difficulty and instant /delay transfers could be resolved through creative thinking that would keep many more players happy in a pretty terminally polarised community.
Also it has not escaped my attention that FD unwittingly helps to fuel these problems. In these matters FD should be the arbitrator between these sides and really should be offering a gameplay solution/option that gives the player a choice on how they want to play. In the current example, why do we have to choose between instant or delay. Why can't we have an option for both that the player can choose from. An Either/Or poll only solidifies the issue without resolving it. I'm pretty sure in the transfer delay group there are factions that will then argue how much of a delay there should be if it passes, creating more future headaches.
I don't want people to have to play the way I want, I would like people to play how they want so they enjoy the game too.
Let's try and create solutions, rather than more future problems. FD should be taking the lead on this, but for seemingly intractable issues the community may need to help.
